Cable Beach vehicle access restricted, as foreshore revamp frustrates Broome locals

The ongoing redevelopment of one of Western Australia's most famous beaches is frustrating locals, who have lost four-wheel drive access to a popular stretch of the sand.
Stage one of works at Cable Beach, 2,100km north of Perth, was recently completed and the Shire of Broome's main redevelopment is now getting underway.
The 22-kilometre-long beach is one of Broome's premier tourist attractions and is famous for its four-wheel drive access.
Crowds sprawl across the sand in deck chairs and cars every night to watch the sun set, but stage two of the redevelopment has seen vehicle access to the northern stretch of the beach cut and its main car parks closed.
The disruption has left residents frustrated and nearby businesses scrambling to relocate.
Once complete, the redevelopment will feature improved public spaces coupled with better beach access and protection for the coast.
Stage one of the development targeted the precinct's southern end, where Premier Roger Cook unveiled a new basketball court and skate park last week.
Stage two, targeting the remaining areas, includes a community plaza, water park and amphitheatre.
But Broome residents face a challenging trade-off, as the works are not expected to be complete until mid-to-late 2026.
For years, food trucks have set up shop in an area near the beach each now impacted by the development.
The space has been designated as overflow parking, while access to the main car park is closed.
Food van owners Petris Torres and Somjit Onvimon said trying to find somewhere else to trade had been tough.
"It's attacking my business so bad," Ms Onvimon said.
"We tried to ask them (the shire) about which spot, 'Can we go here and can we go there?' They keep saying no and no.
Many vans have resorted to trading from the Broome Turf Club car park at Gantheaume Point to the south, but there is less foot traffic and many customers have said it is too far.
"We did less than half of our normal earnings … and it's not like less than half is still good," Mr Torres said.
"It's very easy to identify the problems — where the energy needs to go is finding the solutions."
The sentiment has been echoed by other vendors, who are pleased about the development but believe it could have been managed better.
A community petition calling for a temporary access ramp to the northern stretch of the beach is circulating online and has garnered more than 1,000 signatures.
Dan Healy, who signed the petition, said he was "very excited" about the development but not being able to drive onto the beach had impacted his family's lifestyle.
"I think it will be great once it's finished," he said.
"But I haven't really seen any justification as to why [vehicle access] was removed.
"It's part of the reason we live in Broome — for freedom of access to the amazing environment and all the beautiful beaches."
Vehicles are still permitted to access a stretch of sand on Gantheaume Beach further south, but this smaller space is already becoming overrun.
The Shire of Broome has extended vehicle access at Gantheaume Beach by an additional 500 metres, however some beach goers are frustrated by how busy it has become.
Shire of Broome deputy president Desiree Male said it was a no pain, no gain situation, and asked locals and tourists to be patient.
"There's always going to be disruptions when you have major infrastructure projects like these," she said.
"As a local born and bred here, I would access that beach with my dogs, so I'm going to miss it.

And during EOFY sales is the best time to test the waters as there are huge savings to be made on what is already heavily reduced stock. In Australia, the financial year starts on July 1 and ends on June 30 the following year. Before June 30, retailers drastically reduce their prices in order to clear out their old stock before the new financial year begins. Now known as the end of financial year sales, this the time where we can take advantage of epic discounts on a wide range of items from must-have fashion and beauty to big ticket items such as tech and home appliances. There is no official start date for the end of financial year sales. Most retailers kick off their sales from June 1, but then you might find some starting to drop deals even earlier or hold out until around June 30. Keep this page bookmarked and we'll keep a running update of all the best EOFY sales from eBay throughout the month. There's no set run time, and you'll find each retailer differs. Some run their sale for the entire month of June, whereas others will pick just a few key days or a week to promote their EOFY sales. Generally speaking, all the sales will be over once June 30 rolls around. Want to find out about more great specials and sales events? Australians are predicting a rough 12 months on the back of Trump's tariffs

Australians remain 'cautiously pessimistic' and aren't investing as the threats of US President Donald Trump's tariffs outweigh gains from falling interest rates and inflation. Consumer sentiment edged higher in early June according to the latest Westpac-Melbourne Institute index for the month of June, sitting at 92.6 compared to 92.1 last month. While this is a marginal improvement, sentiment around riskier assets remains low, with 55 per cent heavily favouring putting money in the bank or paying down debt. Just 10.2 per cent say real estate is the wisest investment option, while 9.7 per cent nominated shares. Westpac head of Australian macro-forecasting Matthew Hassan says consumers are waiting to see the fallout from the Trump tariffs. 'Indeed, responses to our quarterly question on the 'wisest place for savings' suggest that the tariff-related turmoil this year has seen what was already a high level of risk aversion intensify even further,' Mr Hassan said. Mr Hassan said more Australians are becoming aware about news on 'international conditions' and it is seen as a 'very clear negative'. 'News recall on this topic has risen to a three-year high with 77 per cent of consumers assessing the news as unfavourable – easily the most negative of the major news topics.' Westpac data also suggests it could be putting a handbrake on investing for years to come. Consumer confidence around the economy slipped slightly in the June quarter, while Australians are feeling more stressed about their jobs with the unemployment subindex rising by 5 per cent. Westpac also said expectations for the family finances over the next 12 months is down 1.9 per cent, while economic conditions over both the next 12 months and five years are predicted to slide. Mr Hassan said consumers overall were in a 'cautiously pessimistic' mood with these international events offsetting gains domestically. 'On the positive side, the RBA's May interest rate cut and moderating inflation are providing significant boosts, particularly around buyer attitudes towards major purchases,' he said. 'But against this, more sluggish growth reads domestically and the unsettled situation around global trade is continuing to weigh heavily on expectations.' One bright spot from the data showed more Australians think now is a good time to buy the family home, as the Reserve Bank of Australia's May rate cut and a slowing inflation rate provide a 'significant boost' towards buyers' feelings towards major purchases. The 'time to buy a dwelling' index rose 3.6 per cent to 93.3. While that marks the strongest reading since September 2021, pessimists still outnumber optimists with homebuyer sentiment still a long way below the historical average of 120. 'Despite this positive outlook for house prices, consumers remain relatively averse to real estate as an investment option and to risk in general,' Mr Hassan said.

‘Such a scam': 26-year-old mortified over how little she's paid off her home loan

A letter from the bank has made one young woman conclude that owning your own home is a 'scam' that she's fallen for. Evy Kassiotes, 26, took to social media to claim home ownership hasn't quite lived up to her financial expectations. 'Owning a home is actually such a scam,' she said. 'I got a letter in the mail to tell us about the progression of our loan and how much we've paid off.' Ms Kassiotes then expressed her shock at learning how little of a dent she had made in her mortgage in almost two years. 'What do you mean we've only paid off $3000 since October 2023? It is now May 2025,' she said. 'Like are you joking? Is this a joke? Am I getting pranked?' Home loans accrue interest just like any other debt. The amount of interest someone pays on their loan depends on interest rates, the loan amount, and the bank they're with, but, on average, Aussies are paying around 6.27 per cent interest on their home loans per annum. Some homeowners choose just to pay back the interest on the loan, which means the loan doesn't shrink, but sometimes, this can be offset by the increase in the property's market value. The fact the 26-year-old hasn't made much of a dent in her mortgage isn't unusual, but it didn't sit right with her. Ms Kassiotes stressed that she knows she's privileged to own a home, but the letter just made her think, 'What the f**k?' The 26-year-old's horror resonated with Aussies who chimed in to share their own mortgage issues. 'This is what people don't understand. And now that there may be a 5 per cent deposit option people will be drowning in debt,' one said. 'Mortgage interest is a scam. Owning a home is all right; at least it's not dead money like rent,' one argued. 'People laugh at me as I plan to sell both my houses and move overseas to pay 0 per cent interest/income/capital gains tax,' one person said. 'I hate those letters,' another commiserated. Others were more concerned that Ms Kassiotes was blindsided by how little she'd paid off, reminding her to do her research. 'Isn't this something you should have researched prior to taking out said mortgage? How is it not common knowledge that you basically pay hardly anything off the principal of your mortgage for the first half of your loan?' one person said. 'The amount of people who take out home loans but don't really understand how a home loan actually works. You gave up 30 years of financial freedom but didn't bother to understand what you signed up for?' another questioned. 'You have to put extra repayments. Even if it's $50 a week it will make a difference. Change all of your bank accounts to offset. This will also make a huge difference. Never just pay the minimum,' someone advised. The fact some Aussies are only paying off the interest on their home loans makes sense when you consider how rough it is for mortgage holders in 2025. According to financial comparison website Finder, in 95 per cent of suburbs in Australia, it is cheaper to rent than to own a home Mortgage stress has also skyrocketed in the past five years. Finder's Consumer Sentiment Tracker that revealed 37 per cent of mortgage holders struggled to pay their home loans in May. More than 1 in 10 homeowners say they have missed a mortgage repayment in the past six months, including 5 per cent who missed just one repayment and 7 per cent who have missed more than one. Of those who missed one or more mortgage payments in the past six months, 1 in 3 said high interest rates meant they could no longer afford to cover their home loan. Financial expert Julian Finch said that he had noticed a grim trend of people struggling to pay their mortgages. 'We've had a relief with rates easing a touch. Certainly it was peak pain around Christmas time last year, I had someone, ring me and say, 'I've got to choose between my mortgage and feeding my family',' he said. Mr Finch said that, before you start paying down your mortgage, you need to ensure you're not just paying off the interest. The financial expert also warned that, even when rates come down, not all banks automatically adjust repayments. 'If you can maintain your repayment it helps you get ahead, but if people need a pressure release, it can be worth a phone call,' Mr Finch said. 'If your payment hasn't moved down, you can call your bank and ask them to recalculate it.'
