Curtains fall on another historic cinema
Rawalpindi's entertainment arena is losing its landmarks as yet another historic venue is being erased.
Nishat Cinema, located on Liaquat Road near the historic Liaquat Bagh, has been demolished after 75 years.
Built in 1950, during the golden era of Lollywood, the cinema primarily showcased Punjabi films, with occasional Urdu screenings.
At that time, a general transport terminal operated next to Liaquat Bagh, and moviegoers would often catch the last show at Nishat before departing to cities like Lahore.
Once home to 24 cinemas, Rawalpindi no longer screens any films. Fourteen cinemas have been replaced with plazas and commercial centres, three converted into wedding halls, two occasionally hosting theatre performances, and five remaining shut for 25 yearswhose owners have also applied for demolition permits to build commercial complexes.
Nishat Cinema once enjoyed packed audiences, including screenings of Indian films until 1952. It flourished until the 1990s, after which the decline of Pakistan's film industry led to the closure of many theatres. Internal disputes among the owners and court cases forced Nishat's closure in 2000.
Following a settlement between the parties and the end of litigation, demolition began on Friday to make way for an approved eight-storey commercial plaza.
The site, considered prime property on Liaquat Road, has long been a focal point for passersbyand even the subject of disputes and gunfire.
With this demolition, Rawalpindi's once-thriving film industry has all but disappeared.
Cinemas such as Naz, Shabistan, Gulistan, Sangeet, Rose, Novelty, Taj Mahal, Imperial, Nigar, Tasveer Mahal, Rex, Capital, and Qasim have all been converted into plazas. Kahkashan, Nadir, and PAF have become wedding halls. Moti Mahal and Rialto occasionally host theatre shows while Khurshid, Plaza, Odeon, Serose, and Garrison have been shut for over two decades.

Magic Moments maker ties up with Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan to launch premium tequila
Radico Khaitan, the maker of 'Magic Moments' vodka, will invest up to $4.56 million and team up with Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan and Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath to launch a premium tequila brand, marking its foray into the category. The Indian liquor maker, known for premium offerings such as Rampur Indian Single Malt and Jaisalmer Indian Craft Gin, will roll out the brand D'YAVOL Añejo — a premium spirit made from agave and aged about two years in wine casks. D'YAVOL, a luxury brand founded in 2022 by Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan, along with Leti Blagoeva and Bunty Singh, is headquartered in Amsterdam and offers vodka, blended malt Scotch whisky and premium streetwear. D'YAVOL Añejo is set to launch by December and depending on state excise duty, will be priced between 20,000 rupees ($228.21) and 30,000 rupees, Radico Khaitan Managing Director Abhishek Khaitan told Reuters on Tuesday. The launch comes as affluent Indians increasingly splurge on everything from luxury dining to premium alcohol, housing and cars. Alcohol sales in the country, according to data from analytics firm Crisil, are projected, to grow as much as 10% to $61.35 billion in fiscal 2026. Tequila is one of the fastest growing segments globally and India is catching on very fast. The market size in the country is about 300,000 cases, out of which 15% is the Añejo (Spanish word meaning 'aged') category, Khaitan said. Shah Rukh Khan set to host party for fans in Dubai this week 'We believe that in the next five years, tequila can reach a volume of about a million cases in India plus global market, so I think it was a great opportunity,' he said. Under the partnership, Radico Khaitan and Shah Rukh Khan's family will each hold a 47.5% stake in the venture, while Kamath will own 5%. The deal also underscores the fierce competition in mass and premium liquor segments. Just three weeks ago, peer Tilaknagar Industries bought the 'Imperial Blue' whisky brand from Pernod Ricard for $486 million.

Fawad's 'Abir Gulaal' to release worldwide except India
After months of buzz, shifting release dates, and political storm clouds, Fawad Khan's latest Bollywood film 'Abir Gulaal' is finally set to hit the screens worldwide, but not in India because of a ban on Pakistani artists. As per Biz Asia, the film will release worldwide on August 29, with its big premiere set overseas but not in India. According to another Indian media report, the movie will release in theatres in over 75 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Directed by Aarti S Bagdi, known for Chalti Rahe Zindagi, Abir Gulaal is expected to be a cross-cultural film that highlights the chemistry between Fawad and Vaani. The film is produced by Indian Stories, A Richer Lens, and Aarjay Pictures. It is co-produced by Vivek B Agarwal, Avantika Hari, and Rakesh Sippy. Playing the role of a UK-based chef, Fawad appears opposite Bollywood actor Vaani Kapoor. Abir Gulaal will be an addition to the romantic comedy genre. It will mark Fawad's return to Bollywood after nine years. Lisa Hayden, Ridhi Dogra, Parmeet Sethi and veteran Farida Jalal are also part of the cast. Abir Gulaal was originally slated to release on May 9. However, the film remains banned in India. The ban on Pakistani actors was implemented by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) following the Palagham attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) in April. Many trade organisations, including All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) and the Federation of Western lndia Cine Employees (FWICE), also pressed for a ban on Pakistani artists in the Indian film industry. Hence, the release of Sardaar JI 3 which starred Pakistani actor Hania Aamir and Abir Gulaal that cast Fawad in lead role were both halted. The film had generated buzz among fans, particularly due to Fawad's return to the Bollywood scene. Fawad made his Bollywood debut in 2014 with Khoobsurat, starring opposite Sonam Kapoor. He went on to appear in Dharma Productions's Kapoor & Sons and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, which was his last Indian project before the ban on Pakistani artists in 2016.

Stage drama highlights plight of Kashmiris
In recognition of Youm e Istehsal, the Punjab Council of the Arts presented a stage drama titled 'Zanjeer'. The drama was based on the six years of military siege endured by illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the sensitive and crucial issues of the right to self-determination, which has been unjustly snatched from the people of Kashmir by India and the abrogation of Article 370. The play presented a realistic portrayal of the deprivation, struggle and sacrifices of the people in Indian-occupied Kashmir. Written by Kashif Raza, the script skilfully wove the political and social landscape of Kashmir into a compelling narrative. Anjum Abbasi directed the drama with artistic finesse, presenting each aspect of the story with visual depth. All the actors delivered powerful performances, bringing their characters to life in a way that earned widespread acclaim from audiences. Along with providing entertainment, 'Zanjeer' also served as a thought-provoking piece of art that forced viewers to reflect on the ongoing fight for justice and freedom in Kashmir. It conveyed a strong message that the people of Kashmir must be granted their fundamental right — the right to self-determination — without delay, and the international community must pay serious attention to this longstanding issue. The drama's cast included Saeed Anwar, Raheel Ijaz, Farooq Jani, Sajjad Khan, Faqeer Hussain, Sawera Shehzadi, Jhalak Ali, Liaqat Shah, Kashif Raza, Yaqoob Sheikh, Gultasab, Asif, Aqib, Kashif, and Asif Khan.
