DA takes eThekwini Municipality to High Court over sewage crisis
Many communities on The Bluff, Wentworth, Merebank and Montclair have been complaining about unmaintained sewerage drains that result in sewage blockages.
The DA approached the Pietermaritzburg High Court to compel the municipality to account for the state of the service delivery in the city.

Today the DA is holding a protest outside court that is led by the Provincial Leader, Francois Rodgers MPL, provincial chairperson Dean Macpherson MP and DA eThekwini caucus leader and councillor Thabani Mthethwa. The matter will be heard in court for two days – today and tomorrow (July 24 and 25).
Provincial communications co-ordinator Nqobile Nhleko said in a statement, 'Our case centers on the inability of the ANC-IFP-EFF run municipality to effectively and adequately implement a turnaround plan to fix the infrastructure of the municipality, ensure enough financial resources are allocated to it and adhere to environmental directives by both national and provincial government.'
Nhleko said the residents and businesses have borne the brunt of this failure, while the DA has been the only party that has vigorously and enthusiastically driven this issue from day one.
'We have been on the ground with the people of the municipality to ensure victory is achieved on their behalf.
'When our arguments are presented to the court compared to other interested parties, there will be light and day between our well researched, fact-based litigation by our all-star legal team compared to other substandard legal teams who will attempt to put on a 'show' in the desperate need to be seen to be doing something,' Nhleko added.

Julius Malema's Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have called for the immediate removal of Gayton McKenzie as Minister of Sports, Arts & Culture following the resurfacing of a long history of hateful, racist, and dehumanising remarks he has made about black people. In other posts, he claimed that terms such as 'tenderpreneur' and 'Black Diamond' merely mean 'a better kaffir,' reinforcing the idea that black people are inferior and deserving of insult regardless of their achievements. Furthermore, he called our fellow Africans 'ape looking women.' WATCH: DA marches on Germiston SAPS over GBV and crime crisis The Democratic Alliance (DA) staged a march to the Germiston SAPS on Friday, demanding increased resources to tackle gender-based violence (GBV) and crime across Ekurhuleni's police stations. According to crime statistics, Ekurhuleni recorded more than 1 600 murders in 2024, with precincts such as Primrose and Germiston ranking among the most dangerous in South Africa. Despite the crisis, many police stations in the district face severe staff and vehicle shortages, leaving GBV victims without adequate support. ALSO READ: WATCH: Delville residents protest over alleged police bias at Germiston station The march, led by DA Deputy Spokesperson on Police, Lisa Schickerling MP, wound through the Germiston CBD before stopping at the police station to hand over a memorandum of demands. 'Out of 1 154 police stations nationwide, only 134 have dedicated GBV desks. This means that most victims have no proper support,' said Schickerling. 'National government is failing to protect the people of Ekurhuleni. Communities are terrorised daily while SAPS remains understaffed, under-equipped, and overwhelmed.' The DA's memorandum calls for: Increased visible policing and crime prevention in hotspots. Fully operational vehicles and adequately staffed police stations. Strengthened GBV support services at all precincts. Transparent, quarterly crime statistics. A dedicated crime-reduction strategy for Ekurhuleni. Schickerling emphasised that without urgent intervention, the safety of residents will continue to deteriorate.
