Survivors and eyewitnesses of the tragic incident alleged that the police personnel ran to save their own lives instead of rescuing the fallen victims during the stampede.
Jagannath Rath Yatra Stampede: At least three people, including two women, died and nearly 50 others were injured in a stampede near Gundicha Temple in Odisha's Puri during the annual Rath Yatra on Sunday.
The stampede broke out around 4 am on Sunday as thousands of devotees gathered to have darshan of the deity when the chariots of sibling deities– Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra– reached Gundicha Temple.
As a result, several devotees fell over each other near the wheels of the chariot. The deceased have been identified as 36-year-old Basanti Sahu from Bolagarh, 42-year-old Pravati Das from Balipatna, and 80-year-old Premakant Mohanty, also from Balipatna.
Victims Accuse Cops Of Fleeing
Survivors and eyewitnesses of the tragic incident alleged that the police personnel ran to save their own lives instead of rescuing the fallen victims during the stampede.
A man who lost his wife in the incident said that not a single authority responded to the escalating situation in Puri.
'I watched in horror as police officers fled to protect themselves. My wife was unconscious, and I had to carry her to the hospital with help from other devotees. Police authorities who should have protected us were nowhere to be found," Dilip Sahu, husband of deceased Prabhati Sahu told Times of India.
Another victim said, 'When this incident happened, no one responded, neither the fire officials, nor the rescue team, nor the hospital team. This is a pathetic incident that cannot be expressed in words."
'There were hardly any police personnel visible despite the massive crowd. It was a Sunday, and the flow of devotees was growing. When people started falling and screaming, there was no organised response," another victim shared ordeal, the news outlet reported.
Parikhita Mishra, an eyewitness from Dhenkanal who narrowly escaped, blamed the administration for allowing two trucks carrying additional wooden ladders for the chariots.
As per the reports, the stampede reportedly began when two trucks carrying sacred ritual materials entered the already-crowded Saradhabali area near the temple. Devotees had been waiting since the early hours to witness the sacred 'Pahuda' ritual, during which the cloth covering the deities' faces is removed.
The unexpected entry of the trucks caused panic, pushing the crowd into disarray. Several people were trampled or suffocated in the chaos.
Santosh Das, a local and frequent temple visitor, criticised the consistent failures in crowd control. He observed that despite predictably large festival crowds each year, police never seem to improve their management, noting that only a handful of officers were present for thousands of devotees, making it impossible to keep order.
Swadhin Kumar Panda, a local resident, alleged poor crowd management and claimed that VIP routes were prioritised while the general public was diverted without proper planning. 'The traffic system was also not good, as many vehicles with unauthorised passes came near the temple. The administration did not control the crowd properly. The biggest problem was the exit gate," he said.
Odisha CM Tenders Apology, Orders Probe
Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi on Sunday sought forgiveness from devotees of Lord Jagannath after three devotees were killed and tendered an apology on behalf of his government for the incident and pledged strict action against those responsible for the lapses in crowd control and security arrangements.
Calling the incident 'unpardonable," Majhi assured that an immediate investigation would be initiated to identify the security failures.
Majhi also chaired a meeting with his deputies to asses the situation and ordered a full-fledged administrative inquiry to determine the cause and accountability of the incident.
The Chief Minister has also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakh each to the next of kin of the devotees who lost their lives in the tragic incident. Expressing sorrow, Manjhi assured that the state government stands firmly with the bereaved families during this difficult time.
The investigation will be led by the Chairman of the Development Commissioner.
In response to the incident, Majhi ordered the transfer of both the Puri District Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain and SP Vineet Agrawal. Two police officers – DCP Bishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhi – were suspended for negligence.
Khurda Collector Chanchal Rana was appointed the new Collector of Puri, while Pinak Mishra took over as SP. An administrative inquiry has also been launched under the supervision of the Development Commissioner.

45 cr people lose Rs 20,000 cr annually: Why India moves to outlaw online gaming

The government thinks online gaming involving money is turning into a 'major problem for society,' and hence decided to move with the prohibition to prioritise the public's well-being At least 45 crore Indians lose nearly Rs 20,000 crore to online gaming each year, according to government data. The central government moved a bill to ban online money gaming platforms, citing addiction and suicides. A source told the Times of India that the government thinks online gaming involving money is turning into a 'major problem for society,' and hence decided to move with the prohibition to prioritise the public's well-being. 'There is a rough estimate that 45 crore people lose money every year. Total impact of the loss is estimated to be around Rs 20,000 crore,' the source told the publication. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The draft law of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, proposes to prohibit platforms or games where users pay money in exchange for higher monetary returns. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) said, 'The immersive and addictive nature of online games, particularly with monetary incentives, has led to significant mental health issues among users, especially children, adolescents and young adults.' Anyone caught offering or enabling online money games may face up to three years in prison, a fine of up to Rs 1 crore, or both. Repeat violations carry stricter mandatory penalties. Promoting or advertising these platforms is also a criminal offence, punishable by up to two years of imprisonment, a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh, or both. The source added that the bill does not seek to punish those who play the games, as they are the 'victims', but action will be taken against individuals who provide real-money gaming platforms, facilitate transaction services, etc. Online gaming spans a wide range, from casual mobile games and educational apps to real-money fantasy sports and poker platforms. Several states have focused on the latter, invoking their constitutional power to regulate gambling and betting. India currently does not have a federal legislation to regulate online gaming. However, some states have rules of their own, like those of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, which have banned online gaming. While states like Sikkim and Nagaland have made it mandatory for operators to register themselves with the government before making their platforms live. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

'Wanted me to look like Nora Fatehi': Woman alleges body shaming, dowry harassment; forced abortion by husband, in-laws

GHAZIABAD: A 26-year-old woman, a resident of Muradnagar, filed a harassment complaint against her husband and in-laws, alleging that he body shamed her and repeatedly told her that he wanted her to look like Bollywood actor Nora Fatehi. Police said the woman approached a mahila thana this week to file the complaint. The couple got married in March this year. The woman told cops that her husband, a 28-year-old physical education teacher from Meerut, was obsessed with Fatehi and pressured her to get into similar shape. She alleged he insisted on her spending three hours at the gym daily. If she didn't go to the gym, he would stop her from eating, so she doesn't put on any weight, the woman said. In her complaint, the woman said he would constantly taunt her about her physical appearance and claim that his life was ruined because he could have married a woman who looked like Fatehi. She said that her family gifted her husband a Mahindra Scorpio, cash and jewellery, apart from spending Rs 75 lakh on the wedding ceremonies. Despite such expenses, she was harassed by her in-laws for more dowry, the complaint reads. The 26-year-old also alleged that her husband gave her an abortion pill without her knowledge, forcing a miscarriage. "Two months ago, I found out that I was pregnant. I shared this with my mother-in-law, who showed no interest. One day, my husband gave me a pill, which I later researched online and discovered was used for abortions," she said in her complaint. As the woman felt unwell, her in-laws dropped her back to her parents' house. When her health deteriorated, she was admitted to a hospital where doctors informed her about the miscarriage, she said. The in-laws allegedly did not allow her to enter their home in Muradnagar in July-end. She finally approached police this week. DCP Dhawal Jaiswal said on Wednesday that police have registered an FIR against the woman's husband and his parents under relevant sections for dowry harassment, intentional humiliation and abortion in BNS. "The investigation is underway and police are checking all the allegations," the DCP said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Labourer who strangled woman (65) for money arrested after gunfight in Noida

Noida: A murder accused was arrested after an encounter with Badalpur police near an abandoned railway crossing at Roza Yakubpur on Tuesday night. Pappu Mistri (27), a resident of Chhapraula, was the main suspect in the murder of an elderly woman who lived near Vidya World School. Pappu allegedly committed the crime on Aug 3 at the victim's house, where he strangled her and fled with her jewellery and mobile phone. According to police, the arrest was made by a police team that was conducting checks near the closed railway gate. A man was spotted approaching, and when signalled to stop, he tried to flee. Suspecting foul play, cops chased him. In retaliatory firing, he sustained a bullet injury and was overpowered," said DCP (central Noida) Shakti Mohan Avasthy. The accused was rushed to a hospital for treatment. A country-made .315 bore pistol, a live and an empty cartridge, a Samsung mobile phone, two earrings, a floral nose pin, and a blade were recovered from his possession. "The recovery of the stolen ornaments from him further establishes his involvement in the murder case," DCP Avasthy said. A case was registered against him under BNS Section 103(1) (murder). Police have initiated further legal proceedings against the accused and are investigating whether he was involved in other crimes in the region. Sources in the police revealed that they initially received information about the 65-year-old woman's body found inside her house. On reaching the spot, police found the woman strangled with her throat slit. Three teams were formed, and a case was registered against unknown persons by the daughter of the deceased at the Badalpur police station. "It was earlier suspected that the murder was carried out for property, but the investigations revealed that the accused worked as a labourer in the area and knew the old woman. On Aug 3, he consumed alcohol, entered the victim's house and committed the crime before fleeing. He also took her phone away to transfer the money from her account," the officer said.
