Senior Puri Jagannath temple priest suspended for involvement in consecration of Digha temple

The Hindu11-05-2025

Ramkrishna Das Mohapatra, a senior sevayat (traditional priest) of the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, was on Sunday (May 11, 2025) suspended for 30 days following allegedly controversial remarks pertaining to his involvement in the consecration of the Jagannath temple in Digha, West Bengal.
The Odisha government had earlier ordered a probe into allegations that surplus timber procured for the Nabakalebara rituals at the Puri temple had been used to carve the idols of the sibling deities at the Digha temple. Although the Odisha government denied the use of any leftover daru (sacred wood) at the Digha temple, Mr. Mohapatra's statement was seen as damaging to the sanctity and traditions of the Puri temple.
In an interview with a Bengali television channel, the senior sevayat had claimed that daru used in the Digha temple had come from the Nabakalebara rituals. He later retracted the statement, calling it a slip of the tongue.
Mr. Mohapatra has been barred from entering the Puri temple premises or participating in any rituals during the period of suspension. The Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration has warned that any attempt to influence other sevayats or disrupt temple rituals would result in a longer ban and stricter disciplinary action. Mr. Mohapatra's conduct will be closely monitored throughout the suspension.
Another controversy erupted over the naming of the Digha temple as 'Jagannath Dham'. The Odisha government strongly objected to the use of the term for the temple in West Bengal, arguing that it undermined the unique spiritual and cultural identity of Puri's Jagannath Dham. Chief Minister Mohan Majhi formally urged his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee to drop the 'Dham' tag from the Digha temple.
'As you are well aware, Shree Jagannath Dham in Puri, Odisha, is one of the Char Dhams of Hinduism and holds unparalleled religious, spiritual, and cultural significance — not just for the people of Odisha, but for millions of devotees across India and the world,' Mr. Majhi stated in his communication.
Puri's titular king, Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, also appealed to the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) to intervene and remove the 'Dham' from the name of the temple at Digha.

Video of TMC councillor's street brawl with another woman goes viral, she blames ‘reckless driving'

After a video of a street brawl involving two women, one being a TMC councillor, went viral, Panihati municipal authorities in North 24 Parganas said the incident would be investigated, and appropriate action would be taken. Local TMC councillor Srabanti Roy, however, said she would not file a police complaint against the other woman, citing her young age, and added that the brawl happened after the young woman's Scooty hit her bike. In the viral video, the councillor is seen slapping a young woman, who retaliates by grabbing Roy's hair and hitting her. As passersby watch, the two women fight, oblivious to attempts by locals to intervene. The two women were eventually stopped from fighting by traffic police. The incident reportedly took place on Monday near Panihati Mahotsavtala Ghat. Roy is councillor of Ward No. 26 in Panihati municipality. Roy on Wednesday told mediapersons that the confrontation began when the young woman's Scooty allegedly hit her bike. Roy claimed that she dismounted to protest and warn the young woman about 'reckless driving'. 'I consider it my duty as a public representative to warn her. But the young woman responded with abuse and took my bike keys. As I protested, I was attacked,' Roy said. 'A section of the media is making a big deal out of my slapping the young woman. But in the video, you can clearly see her actions,' she said. Roy said she was not keen to file a police complaint against the woman, as 'she is young, and I don't want any repercussions for her. However, the Opposition BJP used the incident to accuse the TMC of 'goondaism' and claimed that people were 'no more afraid of the ruling party'. 'This is not a mere scuffle between two women. The lady in white salwar kameez is an elected representative. She is the TMC councillor Srabanti Roy. Good to see that people are not bowing down under TMC's fear and rather standing up against this sort of goondaism,' BJP leader Keya Ghosh wrote on X. Infrastructure revamp to safai reforms: MCM House nod to 29cr projects

Gurgaon: The Municipal Corporation of Manesar (MCM) on Tuesday approved development proposals worth Rs 29 crore, including infrastructure upgrades, regularisation of colonies, and sanitation reforms. Of the 15 matters presented during the House meeting, 11 were passed. Key approvals include the establishment of citizen facilitation centres (CFCs) in all villages under the civic body's jurisdiction and allocation of land for sub-health centres in Shikohpur and Kukdola. The House also cleared the regularisation of three colonies, Dhana, Bas Hariya, and Bas Kusla, and sanctioned the deployment of two staffers for each councillor via the Haryana Kaushal Rozgar Nigam (HKRN). Mayor Dr Inderjit Kaur Yadav told the House that the issue of unauthorised meat shops operating within corporation limits needs urgent attention and called for immediate closure of such establishments. In another key decision, the civic body terminated its contract with the agency handling street vending zones, citing poor performance. The MCM also gave the green light for critical water and sewerage infrastructure across several villages. These include installation of drinking water systems in Bas Kusla, Bas Hariya, and Dhana; sewer and water networks in Dhorka and Kukdola; and new pipelines from IMT Sector 8 to Kasan and from Shaheed Park to Kukdola's animal hospital. Additionally, the house sanctioned RCC drainage from RBS School to Bengali market in Manesar, utility line work in Sikanderpur Badha, drainage work in Nainwal, and water and sewer networks connecting Manesar to Khoh Road. Approval was also granted for the procurement of 200 CCMS panels for better street lighting and sewer cleaning equipment. Commissioner Ayush Sinha said proposals for door-to-door waste collection and street cleaning would now be sent to the headquarters for final approval. "Once sanctioned, sanitation services will be streamlined with ward-level teams consisting of two residents, the municipal and senior sanitation inspectors, and the local councillor," he said. The civic body also plans to install new dustbins in markets and public areas. To improve solid waste management, the dumping site in Sector 8 will be enclosed with a single entry-exit gate. The commissioner further asked officials to acquire jetting machines and increase the number of earthmovers for efficient garbage collection and sewer maintenance. The house also approved a one-year extension of the lease for the MCM office building.

‘Encourages conversions': BJP slams Mamata government's stand on OBC list; calls it ‘dangerous precedent'

NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday upped the ante against West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and accused her government of encouraging religious conversions in the state in the guise of "social inclusion. " BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya, in a social media post on X, cited the state OBC list which stated that "those who convert to Christianity will automatically be considered OBC." "This is Mamata Banerjee's idea of 'social inclusion' — one that openly encourages religious conversions!" the BJP leader said. "So now, conversion from Hinduism is being rewarded with OBC status and lifelong reservation benefits! A dangerous precedent. A clear abuse of social justice for vote-bank politics," he added. Malviya also said that, before 2010, that is during the previous Left Front regime, of the total 66 OBC classes, only 11 classes were from the Muslim community, while the remaining 55 classes were from the non-Muslim community, with Muslim share being just at 20 per cent. The BJP leader said that in the new additions for 2025, of the 51 new additional classes in Part 1, 46 (or 90 per cent) were Muslims, while of 25 new additions in Part-2 a total 21 (or 84 per cent) were Muslims. "If this isn't religion-based appeasement, what is? On June 3, 2025, the West Bengal government increased the OBC reservation in State Services to 17 per cent (from seven per cent) -- clearly to benefit these newly included Muslim groups. But here's the catch: On December 9, 2024, the Supreme Court said -- Reservation can't be based on religion. Earlier, Calcutta High Court had struck down this exact list for doing just that. The new list is nothing but a blatant contempt of court and an insult to the principles of social justice," Malviya said. This comes a day after Mamata, while addressing the Monsoon session of the Assembly, said that religion has no connection with the fresh OBC survey while tabling the report which has identified 140 communities in the OBC category. She also claimed that there were 49 castes in the OBC-A category, while there were 91 castes in the OBC-B category and 50 more castes will soon be included. Meanwhile, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh backed Mamata and said accused BJP of confusing the public. "This is absolutely false. Mamata Banerjee has made things clear about the OBC list. She has explained everything," Ghosh said. "What Amit Malviya and LoP of the state are doing is distorting (things) and wanting to confuse the public. But Mamata Banerjee has made everything clear," he added. What is the issue? Earlier in May 2024, a division bench of the Calcutta high court cancelled all the OBC certificates issued in West Bengal after 2010, which ideally meant that all such certificates issued during the current Trinamool Congress government in the state since 2011 stood null. Following this order from the division bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Rajasekhar Mantha, more than 5,00,000 OBC certificates issued during that period stood cancelled and could not be used for enjoying the reservation for jobs. The West Bengal government moved the Supreme Court based on the Calcutta High Court order, and in March this year, the apex court allowed the state government to conduct a fresh survey to identify the OBCs in the state. However, since the beginning of the survey, the BJP has questioned the style and format of conducting the fresh survey by the state government. Leader of the Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari claimed that the state government's fresh survey was being conducted in the same manner, which did not hold ground in the Supreme Court and was scrapped by the Calcutta high court.
