He also highlighted that the domestic electronics production has gone up by six times.
Addressing the 14th Convocation of IIT Hyderabad, near here, Vaishnaw also emphasised the rapid progress of India's first bullet train project, which is expected to become operational by August or September 2027.
Looking ahead, Vaishnaw said the first Made in India semiconductor chip, on a commercial scale, will be manufactured this year. He expressed confidence that India is on track to become one of the top five semiconductor nations in the world in the coming years, citing its increasing focus on capital equipment and the materials required for semiconductors.
"In just 11 years, we have increased our electronics production six times. That's a CAGR double digit which any corporate would be envious of. We have increased our exports eight times, crossed $40 billion exports in electronics manufacturing, which is a phenomenal pace of growth, something which very few countries of our size have ever seen," the Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, Electronics & Information Technology said.
He attributed this growth to the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and noted that in just about three and a half years, India could design a complete 4G telecom stack. Today, it is installed on almost 90,000 telecom towers, which is more than the network of many countries in the world.
As part of the telecom initiative, the government has set up 100 5G labs where the students can get hands-on experience of the 5G equipment, allowing them to work on real-world use cases and develop practical solutions, the IT Minister said.
He cited five examples of India's growth story and bases for the next generations-- electronics production, AI, semiconductors, telecom sector and railways.
To cultivate talent in the semiconductor field, the Centre has given the latest EDA tools from Cadence, Synopsys, and Siemens to about 270 colleges and institutions and if the startups are added the number becomes 340, he said.
"Nowhere in the world has such a large talent development program ever taken up in the field of semiconductors," Vaishnaw said.
The Indian Railways already has version three of Vande Bharat at this point of time getting manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, he said.

The Chief Minister shared the information about the meeting on the social media platform X. A day earlier, on Monday, CM Sharma held meetings with several Union Ministers in Delhi to review ongoing Central schemes and seek support for upcoming projects in Rajasthan. He met Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Union Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development; Manohar Lal, the Union Minister for Energy, Housing and Urban Affairs; and C.R. Paatil, the Union Jal Shakti Minister, at the Krishi Bhawan. The Chief Minister held an in-depth discussion with Minister Chouhan on issues such as rural development, agriculture, the Lakhpati Didi Yojana, and the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana. He expressed gratitude to the Union Minister for releasing Rs 4,384 crore to Rajasthan under the MGNREGA scheme in the current financial year. CM Sharma also requested Central assistance for the Deployment of Agricultural Supervisors at the Gram Panchayat level, promotion of improved groundnut varieties and strengthening the castor oil industry in Rajasthan. He also highlighted successful state initiatives like 'Per Drop - More Crop', diggi construction and field fencing in areas like Bassi and Jaipur. On the housing front, the Chief Minister underlined Rajasthan's strong performance under PMAY-Gramin. The Chief Minister requested Central assistance for strengthening interstate transmission systems, expanding renewable energy infrastructure, and fast-tracking Jaipur Metro Phase-2 and e-bus services in cities. The Chief Minister also called on Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil at his official residence. He briefed the Minister on the progress of the Jal Jeevan Mission and the Ram Jal Setu Link Project, which aim to improve irrigation and drinking water access in the state. Highlighting the positive impact of this year's monsoon, CM Sharma stated that most of the state's reservoirs are already full. He also emphasised that "Initiatives like Karmabhoomi to Matribhoomi and Vande Ganga Jal Sanrakshan Jan Abhiyan will contribute significantly to improving the groundwater levels in the state."

NEP Turns 5: From AI Apps To IIT Reforms, Centre Rolls Out Over Rs 4,000 Crore Projects
As the National Education Policy completes five years, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced educational projects worth Rs 4,040 crores. These include campus inauguration, digital launches, and global partnerships aimed at realising NEP 2020's transformative vision. In a major global connect, letters of intents were signed with four foreign universities to set up campuses in India- Western Sydney University, Australia in Greater Noida, Victoria University, Australia in Noida, La Trobe University Australia in Bengaluru, University of Bristol, UK in Mumbai. To promote inclusive education, foundation stones were laid for 384 hostels under two tribal welfare schemes-PM-JANMAN and DAJGUA. Aimed at bridging the education gap among Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), these hostels span 20 states with a combined investment of nearly Rs 1,400 crore. In an attempt to expand access to school education, 22 Kendriya Vidyalaya projects have been identified and 613 PM SHRI best performing schools one from each district, 24 best KVS one from each region and 7 best NVS one from each region have been identified for dedication to the nation demonstrating all saturation components. Multiple campuses and facilities under CBSE, KVS, NVS, NCERT, and central universities were also inaugurated, including new buildings for IIT Bombay's Desai Sethi School of Entrepreneurship, lecture halls across NITs, and residential towers in NIT Delhi. Under the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS), one lakh students are expected to benefit offering a minimum monthly stipend of Rs 9,000 for graduates and Rs 8,000 for diploma holders. The total estimated stipend support under the initiative is around Rs 500 crore, jointly funded by the government and participating companies. Curriculum reforms were also announced at IIT Delhi and IIT BHU to make the course flexible with a multidisciplinary learning approach, multiple entry and exits, and internship-linked degrees. In line with Swachh Bharat and environmental consciousness, the Swachh Evam Harit Vidyalaya Rating (SHVR) system was also introduced, which will evaluate schools across hygiene and sustainability metrics, further incentivizing behavioural change in schools. Keeping in tandem the country's push for digital, two digital platforms were also launched. The TARA App leverages speech processing and machine learning to assess reading fluency in Grades 3-8, has already been piloted in 1,200 KVs with over 7 lakh students assessed. My Career Advisor app was also launched which aims to offer career guidance to school students with AI-driven personalization, developed in collaboration with the Wadhwani Foundation. Minister Pradhan called the NEP 2020 as a "living document" that continues to evolve through such initiatives. Five years since its inception, the policy faces challenges too as it draws criticism from some opposition-ruled states, particularly over concerns related to centralisation and language. While 35 universities have begun shifting towards a multidisciplinary model with central support, reforms like the multiple entry and exit system have seen limited adoption-pointing to both early strides and ongoing implementation challenges.

No GST for smaller apartments with maintenance charges below Rs 7,500: FM
NEW DELHI: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has clarified that residents of smaller apartments with maintenance charges below Rs 7,500 are not burdened by Goods and Services Tax (GST) compliance requirements, nor are they required to pay GST on these charges. The clarification came in response to a Lok Sabha Question raised by members -- Manickam Tagore B and Suresh Kumar Shetkar. The Minister's statement, laid on the Table of the House, emphasised that GST compliance requirements, if any, are placed on apartment associations as service providers, not on individual residents. Services provided by an apartment association to its members against maintenance charges up to Rs 7,500 per month per member are exempt from GST, a limit that was increased from Rs 5,000 based on recommendations from the GST Council. Apartment associations are only required to register under GST if their aggregate turnover exceeds Rs 20 lakhs (or ₹10 lakhs in special category States) in a financial year. Even then, they are only required to pay GST if the maintenance charged is more than Rs 7,500 per month per member. The GST Council, a constitutional body comprising both central and state/UT representatives, prescribes GST rates and exemptions.
