Heartbreak as Mom Describes Giving Birth to Her Stillborn Daughter

Tiffany Paltauf (@thatvegancowgirl) posted a reel about the physical, emotional and psychological toll of losing a child at birth. "I wish that I had more time with Bella," the 28-year-old told Newsweek. "I had almost 40 weeks with her and I had an amazing pregnancy." Tiffany Paltauf, in a cherry-print headband and pink shirt, speaks to camera for her Instagram reel. Tiffany Paltauf, in a cherry-print headband and pink shirt, speaks to camera for her Instagram reel. @thatvegancowgirl Living on their animal sanctuary in Granville, Paltauf and husband, Joe Bonitatebus, 32, had already built memories with Bella before her birth. "Her and I had amazing memories of walking around the farm, eating good food and listening to music," Paltauf said. Bella passed away during a planned home birth but was delivered at the hospital at almost 40 weeks, weighing 5 pounds, 10 ounces. Stillbirth remains a largely unspoken grief, affecting around 1 in 175 pregnancies in the United States each year, according to the CDC. But the physical aftermath is often overlooked. Paltauf explained how her body responded as if Bella had lived—her breast milk came in days later. "I seriously did not expect my milk to come in for some reason," Paltauf said. "I just assumed I would be cut some slack. I remember stuffing cold cabbage leaves in my bra and avoiding any and all stimulation to avoid my milk coming in any further." Tiffany also shared that there is "nothing more painful" than giving birth to a baby that comes out silent. "I wish I was prepared more for what it would be like to give birth to Bella sound asleep, but truly nobody can prepare a mom for that," Paltauf said. "When I was pushing, my husband and I were holding each other's hands so tight and praying she would come out screaming, and she didn't." Support from medical professionals was mixed. While Tiffany praised the kindness of her midwifes and hospital staff, she recounted a painful encounter with a bereavement specialist. Paltauf said: "She and I got into an argument because I wanted to leave the hospital because I was in complete shock; she told me I wasn't a good mom. It was awful." To help someone support grieving parents, Paltauf added: "I wish more people knew how important and powerful it is to simply say, 'I am so sorry, I am thinking of you and Bella,' instead of, 'Everything happens for a reason.'" Thousands of Workers Tried a 4-Day Week—the Impact on Their Health Was Clear

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A four-day workweek with no reduction in pay improves both workers' health and overall job performance and satisfaction, according to a new study. Working norms were reshaped by the COVID-19 pandemic five years ago, making remote work a necessity for some amid lockdowns. But it also exposed widespread burnout and disengagement among workers across most markets. In response, some companies began offering reduced hours with full pay. Initiatives like '4 Day Week Global' are aimed at reshaping post pandemic work to meet employees' needs without compromising their companies' interests. The study—led by Boston College researchers Wen Fan and Juliet Schor—tracked 2,896 employees across 141 organizations worldwide over a six months period, to understand the effects of the new scheme on their physical and mental health. The team found that workers whose days were cut by eight hours or more reported the most substantial improvements—which came in the form of reduced mental strain and improved physical health. Smaller reductions also had positive effects. A stock image shows some work colleagues having a laugh over a cup of coffee at their desk. The researchers analyzed changes in burnout, fatigue, sleep quality and work performance resulting from the change to the working week. Employees switching to a four-day week were compared with those at 12 companies that kept the traditional five-day model. Workers in the four-day trail reported higher levels of physical and mental well-being than those who worked five days a week. A similar study was previously conducted in 2022 in the United Kingdom, where over 3,300 employees at 73 companies participated in a six-month trial aimed at testing the effectiveness and productivity of a four-day workweek. It was found that the four-day workweek did not generate a loss of productivity—in fact, it actually improved productivity in some cases. While 46 percent of leaders reported stable levels of productivity, 34 percent said it "increased slightly." The authors of the new study acknowledged some key limitations in their methodology, including the fact that the companies involved opted in voluntarily and that most were smaller firms based in English-speaking countries only. The researchers recommend randomized, government-backed trials be conducted in future to assess shortened workweeks on a larger scale. Do you have a health story to share with Newsweek? FDA names former pharmaceutical company executive to oversee US drug program

WASHINGTON -- The Food and Drug Administration on Monday named a longtime pharmaceutical executive to run the agency's drug program, the latest in a string of leadership changes at the agency. FDA Commissioner Marty Makary announced that Dr. George Tidmarsh, a cancer and pediatric specialist, will direct the agency's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, which regulates the safety and effectiveness of all U.S. drugs. His appointment comes a month after the center's acting director, Dr. Jacqueline Corrigan-Curay, announced her retirement. As the agency's top drug regulator, Tidmarsh will be charged with following through on a number of commitments made by Makary and his boss, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., including reviewing the safety of the abortion pill mifepristone. The FDA is also scrutinizing certain uses of other long-established drugs, including antidepressants and hormone-replacement drugs for menopause. Tidmarsh founded and led several pharmaceutical companies, including Horizon Pharmaceuticals, maker of an anti-inflammatory medication for arthritis. He has also served as an adjunct professor at Stanford University. The FDA's drug center is the agency's largest unit, with nearly 6,000 staffers responsible for reviewing the safety and effectiveness of new drugs and monitoring the use and marketing of older drugs. About 2,000 FDA staffers have been laid off as part of widescale cuts to the federal health workforce overseen by Kennedy. More than 1,000 others have taken buyouts or early retirement, while many others are reportedly searching for new jobs. The departures have threatened basic FDA operations, including the timely review of new drugs. FDA's drug center hasn't had a permanent director since January, when Dr. Patrizia Cavazzoni stepped down days before President Donald Trump took office. Nearly all of the FDA's senior leadership positions have turned over in recent months, either due to retirements, resignations or actions by administration officials placing them on administrative leave. FDA center directors typically hold their positions for years or even decades, serving across multiple administrations, whether Republican or Democrat. In May, Makary named Dr. Vinay Prasad, a prominent critic of the FDA's COVID response, to run the agency's vaccine center. He was also named to the post of FDA chief medical officer. Prasad joined the agency after his predecessor, longtime vaccine chief Dr. Peter Marks, was forced out in March. The in April. A permanent replacement has not yet been named. ___ The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Department of Science Education and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
