Three NSCN cadres killed in Assam encounter after 60-hour search operation

Hindustan Times29-04-2025

Guwahati, At least three suspected NSCN cadres, who entered Assam allegedly to demand extortion money from the National Highway Authority of India , were killed in an encounter with security forces in Dima Hasao district on Tuesday, officers said.
A cache of arms and ammunition were also recovered from their possession by the special units of the state police and Assam Rifles who conducted a search for the militants for around 60 hours.
Senior officers of Assam Police headquarters told PTI that the encounter took place at a place between N Kubin and Herakilo under Haflong police station limits after the NSCN cadres came from Nagaland.
"Acting on a tip-off about the presence of the militants, a joint team of Assam Police and central forces launched an operation in the area. Once face-to-face, a heavy exchange of fire between the security team and militants ensued," a top officer said.
In the gunfight, which lasted for 3-4 hours, three militants were killed on the spot, he added.
"We have recovered two AK-47 rifles, one pistol and a cache of ammunition from the spot," another senior officer said.
He said the area is slightly interior and further details are awaited.
"We have initiated an investigation and launched a manhunt to nab their accomplices," the officer said.
Issuing a press release later, Assam Police Chief Public Relations Officer said a faction of NSCN had given an extortion letter to the NHAI, which was implementing the Golden Quadrilateral project in Dima Hasao.
Based on a tip-off, a search operation was launched by Assam Police Special Units and Assam Rifles in the evening of Saturday, he added.
After almost 60 hours of searching, the security team came across the armed group, which fired on the government forces, the CPRO said.
The security team, comprising three companies, also retaliated against the attack and there was a heavy exchange of fire, which lasted for several hours.
"Search of the area led to the discovery of three bodies. The deceased are suspected to belong to some faction of NSCN," the release said.
Another official said there was a possibility of the presence of more militants considering the prolonged encounter and heavy firing from their side.
"The search operation is still on and we will be able to tell details later," he added.
An official of the civil administration told PTI that local people are unhappy about the fact that NSCN militants came to Assam to extort money while its prime operational area is Nagaland.
"Dima Hasao is a peaceful district and nobody wants any sort of disturbance or bloodbath here," he said on condition of anonymity.

Shuttler Aakarshi Kashyap's takeaways from police training, hitting bullseye with machine guns, regaining confidence

A bunch of her badminton racquet frames and other gear in the usual kitbag, went through the customary check-in two weeks back from Singapore to Indonesia. But World No.46, Aakarshi Kashyap who is sixth in India's women's singles rankings, was also carrying two fat books that nobody else from the badminton caravan on the South East Asian swing, was lugging. On a bunch of flights last month – from India to Thailand to Malaysia to Singapore, Aakarshi was at times deeply studying, on an average 4-5 sections from India's CrPC and BNS texts. While being trained for the Chhattisgarh state police, after her appointment as DSP in lieu of the 2022 Commonwealth Games team silver, Aakarshi has been undergoing police training for the last several months, even as she juggles top-grade badminton tournaments. The full-fledged training at Raipur and Durg (near Bhilai), has also seen her discover that she's got quite an aim, when wielding not just hand-held pistols, but also the heavier AK-47 and the self-loading rifles (SLRs). 'There's of course been a change in how people see me, as a police. It's work that demands responsibility, in being thorough in law and when using weapons. I also take my books everywhere and study on flights and in between training and matches. It's a very different experience,' she says. Seeking job security like any other sportsperson, the slightly built shuttler from Durg, was inspired by some of India's women's hockey players, when she looked at her employment prospects. An assistant manager with RBI earlier, Aakarshi was keen on getting on a stronger financial footing and a more fulfilling job for when her badminton would be over. 'We all need job security and though my aim is to play, I was very excited about this job,' the 23-year-old says. The year-long onfield training for which she went back to Raipur, includes 17 written exams on subjects as varied as law, detection, forensics, but also responsible arms training. 'When it was time to get on the firing range, I knew I would be wielding an AK-47 and SLR which no common person is even allowed to hold. It's a huge responsibility and I was very very excited that day, I couldn't sleep that night before,' she says. Aakarshi is barely 5'3″, and though she's known on the badminton circuit for her endless endurance in rally games – though the finishing tends to be missing – she wasn't quite prepared for how heavy the weaponry can be. 'It's very heavy and I had to start, prone (lying down). But I realised my aim is actually good. We took 60 shots on the AK-47. On the INSAS (Indian small arms system – which has light machine guns and assault rifles), everything was Bullseye,' she said of the ARs that finally sunk in the deeply serious nature of her future job. 'With the standing pistol, 9 out of 10 were on target, and 6 were Bullseye. But you also realise your responsibility in carrying them.' Her entry-level fitness had helped her clear the initial physical exams. 'That was just 5 km running, pull ups, push ups,' she recalls of her training. At Singapore last month, Aakarshi took a set off Chinese World No.4 Han Yue, and says she realised how her police training had made her mentally stronger, though she couldn't win. 'I'd just got my period at Singapore and could not go all out and kept getting tired. But though I couldn't bend down much and the backache was terrible and all my focus on stomach cramps, I realised pushing through tough training helps me focus even when everything is not perfect. I always struggled with pull-ups before my police academy training. Now with even climbing ropes, imbalanced obstacles drills, I can do 7-8 repetitions at a go. It's slowly reflecting in my badminton,' she says. Aakarshi was a junior national champion and won the seniors title too, but without a proper smash on the international circuit, she had struggled to make headway in seniors despite being extremely gritty. She has also been mercilessly trolled, with online anons labelling her 'Lord Aakarshi' sarcastically, something that took a toll on her mind, and she even broke down courtside after losing her Nationals final at Pune to Anupama Upadhyaya. 'Police training brought back my confidence. It shows in how I control the shuttle better. I used to overthink when I couldn't apply strategy and would panic and go blank on court. I'm calmer now in long rallies,' she says, even if the punishing pace of rallies can still catch her out. Clarity in shot selection however has seeped in. Not someone who is physically the sturdiest given her frame, cop training has lent her mental solidity, and also brought in some realism in her life, quite apart from the bubbles most athletes inhabit. 'Though I have full support of my seniors to train and play and try to win on international circuit, the small break for training I took, has brought in focus into my career. When I was at a Grameen thana (rural police), I had to actually receive calls and head to where incidents happened. It opens your eyes to lives that are very different from what we badminton players live,' she says. While her actual duty workload is expected to be minimal as she focusses on trying to make a mark in badminton, Aakarshi senses a change within her. 'Compared to 2024, I'm much stronger because of my job training. Stamina higher. But also the mindset, I'm always alert now. And better at time management,' she laughs. 'There's no free time to waste or think of what people say about my results. I'm trying hard. And I'm taking risks on court I never would have,' she says.

Wazahat Khan, the man who filed FIR against influencer Sharmistha Panoli, arrested in Kolkata

Wazahat Khan, whose complaint led to influencer Sharmistha Panoli's arrest on May 30, was himself arrested on the night of June 9 from Kolkata's Amherst Street area. BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul had also registered a case against Mr Khan last week. Multiple FIRs were filed against Mr Khan, including one in Assam, for 'allegedly spreading hatred on social media and hurting religious sentiments,' according to Kolkata Police officials. The 29-year-old Wazahat Khan has been booked under Bhartiya Nyay Sanghita's Sections 196(1)(a)/299/352/353(1)(c). He was absconding for the past 10 days. He is set to produced in a city court on Tuesday (June 10). Police had conducted multiple raids at Digha and Howrah based on leads. But Mr Khan was finally arrested from the Amherst Street area in relation to a case registered with the Golf Green Police Station. When Wazahat was absconding, his father shared concerns that his son was under threat. 'He was getting multiple calls throughout the day. He left home and his phone is switched off. We have not been able to find him since then, we are really worried,' Sahadat Khan, Mr Wazahat's father said. Reacting to Mr Khan's arrest, BJP State president and MP, Sukanta Majumdar said that the Mamata Banerjee government 'orchestrated his arrest through her subservient Kolkata Police to ensure his safe and protected custody under the State's wing.' A team of Assam Police was also present in West Bengal looking for Mr Khan based on the case registered against him in Assam. There were social media rumours that the Kolkata Police was not cooperating with their Assam counterparts. 'Kolkata Police strongly refutes the misleading claim being circulated on social media suggesting non-cooperation with Assam Police,' the Kolkata Police officials said in a statement. 'Wazahat Khan's arrest, immediately following the departure of Assam Police from Kolkata, is nothing but a textbook example of Mamata Banerjee's age-old politics of appeasement,' Mr Majumdar wrote on social media handle X. He further accused that this was a blatant abuse of State machinery by the CM to protect notorious criminals. On Friday (June 6, 2025) afternoon, Ms Panoli was set free from Kolkata's Alipore jail. She was granted bail in the hate speech case by the Calcutta High Court on Thursday (June 5, 2025) for a bond of ₹10,000. The court also asked the police to offer her protection because her counsel stated that the young woman was receiving rape and death threats after her arrest. This came after Ms Panoli posted a video on social media and made communal comments and made claims about Operation Sindoor which the Kolkata Police noted as 'hate speech' and asked people not to confuse that with 'freedom of speech'. She did this as a reaction to the Pahalgam attack which left at least 26 people dead in Jammu and Kashmir.

Drugs worth over Rs 55 crore seized in Manipur's Churachandpur

IMPHAL: A joint team of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Customs, Assam Rifles and Manipur Police have seized drugs and cash worth Rs 55.52 crore during an operation in Churachandpur district, a government statement said. "A special operation codenamed 'Operation White Veil' was carried out in the bordering areas of Churachandpur district of Manipur on June 5-7 by a joint team of DRI, Customs, Assam Rifles and Manipur Police," it said on Monday. In the early hours of June 6, two suspects in a vehicle at Behiang village bordering Myanmar were discreetly pursued, leading to a residential house at Thadou Veng in Singngat sub-division. On searching the house, 219 soap cases containing heroin and eight packages and 8 small tin cans containing opium were recovered, along with two walkie-talkies and cash amounting to Rs 7,58,050. While one person was apprehended from the house, two other persons, who escaped, were intercepted at Bualkot check gate, the statement said. In a quick follow-up action, the residential house of one of the accused persons located at Behiang village was searched and two packages containing opium and cash amounting to Rs 28,05,000 were seized. "The joint team seized 7,755.75 grams of heroin worth Rs 54.29 crore and 6,736 grams of opium worth Rs 87.57 lakh in the international grey drug market, along with cash of Rs 35.63 lakh," it said, adding two walkie-talkies and a vehicle were also seized and five persons arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. Acting on further inputs received during the operation, two persons carrying improvised manpacks were intercepted at Zoukhonuam village near BP 46 on June 7. A search of the manpacks resulted in the recovery of 440 soap cases containing heroin, it said. Preliminary investigation indicates that the seized contraband drugs were smuggled into the bordering areas of Churachandpur district from Myanmar through the porous forested Indo-Myanmar border.
