Drugs worth over Rs 55 crore seized in Manipur's Churachandpur
IMPHAL: A joint team of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Customs, Assam Rifles and Manipur Police have seized drugs and cash worth Rs 55.52 crore during an operation in Churachandpur district, a government statement said.
"A special operation codenamed 'Operation White Veil' was carried out in the bordering areas of Churachandpur district of Manipur on June 5-7 by a joint team of DRI, Customs, Assam Rifles and Manipur Police," it said on Monday.
In the early hours of June 6, two suspects in a vehicle at Behiang village bordering Myanmar were discreetly pursued, leading to a residential house at Thadou Veng in Singngat sub-division.
On searching the house, 219 soap cases containing heroin and eight packages and 8 small tin cans containing opium were recovered, along with two walkie-talkies and cash amounting to Rs 7,58,050.
While one person was apprehended from the house, two other persons, who escaped, were intercepted at Bualkot check gate, the statement said.
In a quick follow-up action, the residential house of one of the accused persons located at Behiang village was searched and two packages containing opium and cash amounting to Rs 28,05,000 were seized.
"The joint team seized 7,755.75 grams of heroin worth Rs 54.29 crore and 6,736 grams of opium worth Rs 87.57 lakh in the international grey drug market, along with cash of Rs 35.63 lakh," it said, adding two walkie-talkies and a vehicle were also seized and five persons arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
Acting on further inputs received during the operation, two persons carrying improvised manpacks were intercepted at Zoukhonuam village near BP 46 on June 7. A search of the manpacks resulted in the recovery of 440 soap cases containing heroin, it said.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the seized contraband drugs were smuggled into the bordering areas of Churachandpur district from Myanmar through the porous forested Indo-Myanmar border.

Sonam Raghuvanshi's Cousin Paid Hitmen Hired For Raja's Murder: Police
A cousin of Sonam Raghuvanshi had cleared the first installment of payment to the three hitmen who were hired to murder her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, in Meghalaya last month, police officers probing the case said on Thursday. While five people have been arrested so far, Sonam's cousin Jitendra Raghuvanshi has now come under the police's scanner for his possible involvement in the crime that has sent shockwaves across the country. According to the police, Jitendra's UPI account was used to pay the first installment of the money that was promised to hitmen Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan and Anand Kurmi by Sonam on May 23 - the day Raja was murdered. It could not be immediately ascertained if Jitendra had facilitated the payment before or after the crime was committed. Jitendra is a part of the family business that is mostly monitored by Sonam, and reportedly oversees the expenses, police said. "We are trying to find out if he was aware of the reason behind the payment," one of the officers said. Sources said Sonam had offered Rs 20 lakh to the hitmen, although an official confirmation or statement in this regard is also awaited. Besides the hitmen, Sonam and her boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, have been arrested for the murder. Police said Raj was also involved in Sonam's family business and worked as an accountant at the furniture sheet unit owned by them. The two wanted to marry each other. Police earlier said that Vishal was the first one to attack Raja with a machete. On May 11, 24-year-old Sonam and 29-year-old Raja got married, despite the former's relationship with Raj. After their wedding in Indore, Raja and Sonam travelled to Meghalaya for honeymoon. They disappeared on May 23, hours after checking out of a homestay at Nongriat village, 20 km from where Raja's body was found on June 2. Amid an intense search for "missing" Sonam, she surfaced in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur on Sunday night and later surrendered at Nandganj police station. This came hours after Akash, Vishal, and Anand were arrested from Uttar Pradesh and Indore and Sagar towns (in Madhya Pradesh). Raj was arrested later. On Wednesday, Sonam reportedly confessed to killing her husband in the northeastern state. Her brother Govind said his family has snapped all ties with her. Odisha: Man injured in communal clash dies; Internet services suspended for 24 hrs in Bhadrak
Bhubaneswar, June 12 (UNI) The Bhadrak District Administration has suspended internet services for 24 hours, starting from 6 AM on Thursday, anticipating a law and order issue following the death of a man who was injured in a communal clash a few days ago. The administration stated that internet services would remain suspended from 6 AM Thursday to 6 AM Friday in sensitive areas including Bhadrak Municipality, Bhadrak Block, Tihidi Block, Dhamnagar Block, and Dhamnagar Notified Area Council (NAC) as a precautionary measure to maintain public order. Santosh Parida, a resident of Kasati village in Tihidi, who had sustained injuries during a communal clash on May 30, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday at a private hospital. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had already announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to Parida's next of kin and promised employment for one family member. Expressing grave concern over the incident, Majhi assured that strict action would be taken against the culprits and justice would be served. The Odisha government has deployed 27 platoons of police in the affected areas. So far, 12 individuals, including the prime accused, have been arrested in connection with the incident. Efforts are also underway to organise peace committee meetings involving leaders from both communities to prevent law and order problems.
