England vs India Playing 11 LIVE UPDATES, 4th Test: Sai or Shardul - Who will replace Reddy in XI?

Business Standard12 hours ago
In the fourth Test of England vs India Test series, also known as Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, captain Shubman Gill has to make a big selection call ahead of toss at 3:30 PM IST, at the Old Trafford in Manchester today. India trailing the five-match series 2-1 and need to make at least two changes in their Playing 11 given Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep, who played third Test, are injured. While Reddy has been ruled out of the series, Akash is not available for selection for 4th test.
The injury cloud around the Team India means, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah set to play the Manchester Test, a decision largely dictated by the series situation.
Third seamer slot wide open
With Akash Deep unavailable, the third fast-bowling slot remains undecided. Vice-captain Shubman Gill indicated that a final call will be made just before the toss, with the choice between Prasidh Krishna, who has already featured twice in the series, and newcomer Anshul Kamboj, who recently joined the squad in the UK.
Rain forecast forces rethink on spin options
Given the weather forecast predicts persistent rain throughout the match, the team management is also assessing the need for an additional spinner. This adds another layer of complexity to the already tricky selection process.
Middle-order shifts on the cards
Batting changes are also expected, with Nitish Reddy likely to be replaced by a specialist batter, possibly Sai Sudharsan. However, the larger dilemma lies in balancing the lower-middle order. The team must decide whether to retain Washington Sundar for his all-round abilities at No. 8 or bring in Shardul Thakur to bolster the seam attack.
Dawson returns as England announce Playing XI
Meanwhile, England have taken a more straightforward route, announcing their playing XI in advance. Their only change from the Lord's Test is the inclusion of Liam Dawson, who replaces the injured Shoaib Bashir. The 35-year-old Dawson, making his first Test appearance since 2017, brings left-arm spin to the attack and strengthens the batting unit with his impressive record of 18 first-class centuries.
Squads:
England Squad: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes(c), Jamie Smith(w), Liam Dawson, Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell.
India Squad: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Karun Nair, Shubman Gill(c), Rishabh Pant(w), Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Anshul Kamboj, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Kuldeep Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Prasidh Krishna, Sai Sudharsan, Dhruv Jurel.

Why Dinesh Karthik is impressed with Shubman Gill as a Test captain so far

In the aftermath of the escalating tensions in the Lord's Test last week, former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik said he has been impressed with Shubman Gill standing his ground and showing leadership so early in his tenure as captain. In the dying moments of play on Day 3, Gill had been in an altercation with England opener Zak Crawley over what he felt were the batter's deliberate attempts to cause delays. More heated exchanges followed in the rest of the Test as the hosts ran their way to a thrilling 22-run victory. Ahead of the fourth Test in Manchester, which started on Wednesday, Gill had said in his press conference that while he was not proud of everything he did, he felt he was only standing up for his team against tactics he felt are 'not in the spirit of the game.' "It's good to be fiesty, you need to have an identity as a captain" 🔥 DK is loving Shubman Gill's approach to captaining India 🇮🇳 — Sky Sports Cricket (@SkyCricket) July 23, 2025 Karthik felt that Gill's response showed his potential as a leader. 'I have really enjoyed him as a captain so far. On the field, he is improving. But off the field is where is where I have been most impressed,' he said on Sky Sports. 'I think yesterday's press conference was absolutely box office.' 'I like it, it is good to be feisty, You need to have an identity as a captain. And Shubman Gill, from that third day at Lord's, has shown that he has a lot of aggression inside him. The result may not have gone his way but the point is it has made for a thrilling Test series so far and his captaincy is right at the forefront of it, backed by his batting skills as well,' Karthik added. Gill agreed with Karthik's assessment when he put the charged atmosphere down to his motivation to win. 'It didn't just come out of nowhere. And we had no intention of doing that whatsoever. But you're playing a game, you're playing to win, and there are a lot of emotions involved,' he had said on Tuesday.

ENG vs IND: Injury concerns deepen for India on opening day in Manchester

The final session of Day 1 of the 4th Test between England and India saw Rishabh Pant ushered off the field with an injury as India ended the final session with the score at 264/4 in Manchester. Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur continue to bat for India after Sai Sudharshan too was dismissed in the final session by Stokes after a gritty fifty. Sai Sudharshan's gritty fifty While many thought Sai Sudharshan visualising his shots on the Manchester pitch a day before the Test was going to go in vain, the batter proved his critics wrong. The practice saw him visualising pull shots other than the regular shots you see in Test cricket. And to back his efforts from the other day, each and every one of his shots were put to use as he continued to fight for his side with a gritty fifty against the English bowlers on the day. Losing out on his wicket to Stokes in the final session must have been disappointing for him as he would have liked to build on to his fifty. Pant ushered off the field due to injury With Rishabh Pant looking for boundaries every now and then with his first six coming in the 61st over, Sudharshan's patient knock made the partnership tick in what was a cloudy atmosphere that forced the floodlights to be turned on in Manchester. The duo put up a 50-run stand after tea as Pant also became the first visiting wicketkeeper to score 1000 runs in England. Pant kept at it, targeting Dawson for some more boundaries on the day while Sudharshan patiently kept creeping up towards his fifty. However, bad luck followed Pant from the Lord's Test as the Indian wicketkeeper-batter had to be helped off the field after sustaining a toe injury from a yorker delivered by Chris Woakes on Day 1 of the 4th Test against England in Manchester. Pant appeared to be in significant pain after the delivery. Following medical treatment, the team decided to use a stretcher to carry him off the field due to swelling and a minor cut on his right leg. While Jadeja replaced him on the day, Sai Sudharshan too followed Pant back as he lost his wicket to Stokes, caught at backward sq. leg by Carse. With two fresh batters at the crease, India had to start all over again to build a stable partnership and end the day without losing any more wickets. India-England share first two sessions on Day 1 Earlier, India's solid start in the 4th Test at Old Trafford began to unravel in the post-lunch session as England fought back with key wickets. After a wicketless first session where openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul built a solid 78-run stand, the Three Lions made inroads through Chris Woakes, who dismissed Rahul for 38 in the 30th over, caught in the slips. Rahul fell short of a half-century, leaving India one short of a 100-run opening partnership. Debutant Sai Sudharsan came in at No. 3, looking to make an impact. Jaiswal, meanwhile, found it tough going against Brydon Carse, who extracted movement off the pitch. Despite some discomfort, Jaiswal reached a gritty fifty off 96 balls, becoming the first Indian opener in 50 years to score a half-century in Manchester. However, he couldn't push on as left-arm spinner Liam Dawson, returning to Test cricket after eight years, dismissed him for 58, caught in the slips. Dawson's breakthrough tilted momentum England's way. Sudharsan narrowly avoided becoming the next casualty after edging a delivery down leg, only for Ollie Smith to drop the chance. However, skipper Shubman Gill didn't survive for long, falling LBW to Ben Stokes for just 12 runs in the 50th over. From a dominant start, India slipped to 149/3 at tea, with Rishabh Pant and Sudharsan at the crease. Earlier, under overcast skies, Jaiswal and Rahul showed composure against disciplined spells from Archer and Woakes, helping India to a steady start before England's resurgence. Manchester Test: India's gritty start undone after nasty injury to Rishabh Pant

All seemed to be going well for India until the 65th over on a gloomy, stop-start day in Manchester. Looking for payback after their heartbreaking defeat at Lord's, the Indian team had shown grit and character, grinding their way to 201 for 3 by halfway through the final session of Day 1 in the fourth Test. But then, things unravelled, and unravelled 9:50 PM IST, Rishabh Pant was carried off in an ambulance after badly injuring his foot. He had gone for a reverse sweep and got a thick under-edge, the ball thudding into the area just above his right toe. He winced, started limping, and within minutes, couldn't put any pressure on the foot. It was only when the physio pulled off his boot that the damage really became clear. Pant's foot had swollen-up badly, and early signs suggested he might have fractured the bone above his vs ENG, 4th Test: Day 1 Updates As Pant was driven off on a golf cart, the flashbacks came quick. The horror of the Sydney Test earlier this year played out in the minds of fans - when Jasprit Bumrah had to be taken off for scans, ruling him out with the ball in a Test India went on to lose. This felt eerily a cruel blow for Pant, who just can't seem to catch a break right now. Named vice-captain for this series after sitting out the entirety of the Champions Trophy 2025, this was supposed to be his big return as a leader in the red-ball setup. He had started the series brilliantly with the bat, but then copped a blow to the left finger during the Lord's Test, which had already affected his output with the racing against time to be fit for the Manchester Test, Pant is likely to be out again - this time with what could be a broken toe - possibly ruling him out of the series altogether and adding to India's growing injury list on this timing couldn't have been worse. India had fought hard throughout the day, navigating tremendous pressure from England, showing the kind of discipline they lacked at Lord's. But Pant's injury pulled the rug out from under what had been a strong Solid Start in Gloomy ManchesterIndia were sent to bat first under overcast conditions in Manchester on Wednesday. Ben Stokes, hoping to pick up quick wickets, was thwarted by the survival skills of Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul, who dropped anchor at Old Trafford. While Jaiswal was lucky not to edge several balls in the morning session, Rahul showed his experience and maturity to keep Jofra Archer, Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue at and Jaiswal punished anything short bowled at them and managed to keep their bats away from the moving ball in the morning session. This was the first time since 2023 that an Indian opening pair went home unscathed in a morning session of a Test the process, Jaiswal completed 1,000 runs against England in Test cricket, reaching the milestone in 16 innings - joint-fastest alongside Mohammed Azharuddin.- EndsTune InMust Watch
