
BEE is essential for economic growth

The debate about racialised socio-economic redress is at the centre of South African public policy debates. It has even permeated trade relations with the United States, which ironically has its own version of economic redress for minority groups in certain states. Yet US President Donald Trump is challenging redress policies in a country that has systemic racialised class and gender socio-economic inequalities.
His views are echoed in Professor William Gumede's intervention in this debate. His article, which appeared in the
There is general consensus in society that the current black economic empowerment model has largely failed to produce the intended socio-economic outcomes. But this does not mean the constitutional and policy imperatives underpinning redress should be abandoned.
Several researched analyses of racialised disparities in both labour and product markets illustrate the need for strengthened economic redress.
Gumede's extreme position overlooks this empirical evidence and draws on the following flawed arguments.
First, he uses the term 'political capitalists' to describe individuals or enterprises that obtain state contracts or private equity in firms without any knowledge of business operations. These political capitalists are described as inherently parasitic by Gumede and he further suggests that they all have connections to the ANC-led political alliance.
This generalisation is problematic because it assumes that only black-owned businesses obtain state contracts and established white corporations do not rely on state procurement. Policy and basic market intelligence reports refute this claim and illustrate how large corporations equally benefit from government contracts.
Additionally, the term 'political capitalists' is conceptually and theoretically flawed because it creates a superficial divide between political and economic actors in a society. Political economy studies highlight that business and state relations are inherently connected in economic history. In simple terms: there is no Chinese wall between political and economic developments in a society.
The second problem with Gumede's view is that he says BEE is primarily responsible for structural issues such as deindustrialisation, poverty, inequality and unemployment. This proposition is not backed up by evidence and he does not explain how he arrived at this conclusion.
Research literature on economic trends challenge Gumede's position. Deindustrialisation in South Africa has been caused by structural changes in the economy, especially since the early 1990s. Trade and financial liberalisation exposed our domestic manufacturers to competition in key sectors such as textiles.
In addition, the country's financial sector has prioritised short-term investment returns and implemented investment risk strategies that make it difficult for enterprises interested in long-term economic activity associated with sustaining South Africa's industrial base.
Furthermore, there are several studies on the causes of poverty and inequality. This research explores multidimensional causes and does not cite economic redress policy as an impediment for addressing systemic socio-economic exclusion.
In other words: there is no factual basis for Gumede's proposition on the causal link between BEE and the economic structural fault lines cited above.
Another flaw in Gumede's article is the erroneous and sweeping generalisation about corruption. He attributes corrupt or patronage-based networks in the economy to the creation of BEE. This narrow approach is not based on a holistic understanding of corruption in the economy.
The Zondo Commission Report and other authoritative market behaviour investigative accounts elucidate illegal economic activities that go beyond the scope of BEE policy implementation. For example, practices such as price collusion, tax evasion and dividing product markets.
Actually, some of the established multinationals that Gumede and others laud were cited as facilitators of corrupt dealings in these reports. Corruption is a significant impediment for inclusive growth in South Africa. But it is incorrect to suggest that it is solely caused by BEE. Economic rents such as incentives, subsidies and preferential procurement policy instruments are used across the world successfully. These measures are not abnormal or inherently corrupt if used for developmental purposes.

Aliens, billionaires, swivel-eyed fake news cults and end times
The Fermi Paradox holds that there is a high probability of extraterrestrial civilisations, yet there is no evidence of this. It was far from coincidence that the Fermi Paradox evolved during the Cold War. The Mexican stand-off between ideologically opposed nuclear-armed superpowers to deep-fry the planet faster than baking bread favouring one answer to the existential question: 'So where is everybody (extraterrestrial beings)?' Italian-American scientist Enrico Fermi's 1950 cafeteria banter with colleagues at the atomic age's birthplace, New Mexico's Los Alamos National Laboratory, crystallised the quandary of advanced 'alien' lifeforms' 'high-likelihood' but any conclusive evidence testifying to their existence was absent. Nasa moon-landing consultant, astronomer, planetary scientist and sage Carl Sagan gave the dichotomy perspective: 'The universe is a pretty big place. If it's just us, seems like an awful waste of space.' The home-base Milky Way galaxy has about 300 billion stars and there are an estimated 70 sextillion others in the observable universe, while associated planets and moons flirt with infinity numbers, where possibility and probability collide. One calculation making the maths make sense was each grain of sand from all Earth's beaches represents 10 000 stars. The human body's raw material construction, and that of other species, is among the universe's most common and recurring elements contained by the incomprehensible scale that's yet hinted at hosting other intelligent beings. Sliding doors The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence's radio telescopes' scanning for advanced life's breath, such as 'alien' telecommunications, has met silence after 65 years of listening — a span not registering a nanosecond on the universe timeline. Like politics and comedy, a simple Fermi Paradox explanation for the 13,8 billion-year-old universe's apparent sparse population was timing. An interstellar civilisation's Earth safari during the Silurian Period 420 million years ago would have spotted ocean plants migrating to emerging land masses and abundant 2,5m sea scorpion apex predators. It suggests technologically advanced cultures were rare apparitions out of sync with similarly evolved species, and if simultaneous, separated by sheer vastness. Another rational interpretation was that intelligent extraterrestrials avoid contact with a crude civilisation's violence addiction and opt to watch the shit-show at arm's length — for entertainment or anthropological purposes. This is termed the 'zoo hypothesis' or 'dark forest theory'. Rolling the dice Conditions considered the basic ingredients for complex intelligent organisms to be a contender include an atmospheric planet orbiting a star in the 'goldilocks zone'. A moon for ocean tidal shifts, tectonic plates, magnetosphere shielding biological life from solar and cosmic radiation and a lithosphere, or rigid crust. Even then, cosmos-wandering intelligent life is never a 'gimme'. Chance tilts the outcome with a coin toss or body-design sabotages gravity-defying aspirations. 'Dolphins have had 20 million years to build a radio telescope and not done so,' astrophysicist Dr Charles Lineweaver, an Australian National Science Institute associate professor, reportedly noted. Catastrophic asteroid strikes on Earth average once every 100 million years, from crater evidence, and the paradox deems the eventuality a low threat to advanced lifeforms expected to have implemented counter-measures. The Chicxulub Impactor's hit 66 million years ago, terminating dinosaurs' 160 million year dominion, allowed intelligent life's chances a foothold. The fall-out eclipsing the sun, ushering a decades-long sub-zero winter in the wake of mountainous tsunamis and, briefly by geological measures, landscapes sprouting fungal paradises feasting on decay. Starvation, drowning and evisceration aside, surviving cold-blooded reptiles' staging an encore were muted by fungal infection susceptibilities that warm-blooded mammals nibbling psilocybin's ancestors escaped largely unscathed, stumbling towards the technological age and its monsters. Sagan added another Fermi Paradox choke-point in 1966 — advanced societies' penchant for self-annihilation. Nuclear holocaust for beginners The 'Great Filter' premise identifies nine steps for intergalactic roaming species including polymeric ribonucleic acid (RNA) molecules' seismic leap to single and multi-cell organisms, tool-making capacity and the penultimate technological stage; intelligent life's nemesis — as arduous as threading an oligarch through the eye of a needle — before interstellar nomad rankings. A childhood trawling through Cold War military garrisons in Cyprus, Singapore, West Germany and England's Yorkshire Moors and Salisbury Plain was at times spent eavesdropping on adults' nuclear war musings, an occasion only slightly less common than a Karoo farmer's pre-occupation with rain. There was one gear for the West's nuclear weapon's armoury. Unleash it all and leave nothing in the silos or submarines. Similar strategies adopted by Soviet Warsaw Pact's forces having locked in every 'gypsy' home coordinate for first or retaliatory strikes. Childhood innocence thought there was one way to skin a cat and expected an ending with a bang, rather than a whimper. Step aside Schopenhauer Technology's bear traps changed both the numbers and nuances, condemning Earthlings to be the quintessential intergalactic hosts but never the guests. Curtis Yarvin, California's Silicon Valley totem and low-grade Jim Jones cultist with cashflow, preaches 'dark enlightenment' and 'accelerationalism' to extreme wealth's navel-gazing gullibility. The far-right 'philosophising' blogger, and US Vice President JD Vance's guru, promotes anti-democratic and anti-egalitarian creeds, accelerating societies' disintegration and, substituted by technological plutocracy rising phoenix-like. The deepest pocket is crowned king. So far, it's going swimmingly. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robots dominating or liquidating the inventors, and eight billion distracted bystanders, was a risk assessed once a creation without empathy was confident, slicing the technician's 'umbilical cord' for autonomy. Cult sci-fi or documentary? The Fermi Paradox presumptions view extraterrestrial intelligent life tracing similar contours from stone axe to a species ending its 300 000 year tenure as the mother of invention after AI's inception and a poisoned planet the receipt. Profit's plagues are wrapped in fossil fuel's micro and nano plastics and industry's 'forever chemicals' — ingested from non-stick pans, sparkling spring water and other popular consumer items. Both infestations strongly suspected of, and some links clinically confirmed, tripping a variety of cancers, neurological and reproductive disorders. Since the 2006 release Children of Men , adapted from PD James's 1992 dystopian novel of the same name, the sci-fi movie's hue has morphed into an Age of Consequences reality show. The 2027 dateline's backstory was metastasising authoritarian corporate security states usurping democracies after a worldwide pandemic and global economic meltdown as humanity wilts from infertility — fomenting extinction's malaise under the one percent's watch. Pinpointing the epoch, humans strayed from an intergalactic species' 'manifest destiny' is precise. Ground zero was corporatised religion's mythologies and superstitions accorded equality to evidence-based facts — challenging the 'intelligent life' label from the outset. The fall The apocalypse desert religions — Christianity, Islam and Judaism with pedigrees reaching from the Pharaoh's sun god Ra — were the original fake news purveyors and its medieval mindset oils this century's debilitating post-truth's dumbed-down and vicious voting fodder. The far-right reincarnation's distinct lilt from last century's European inspirations leans on peddling monotheism's sophiaphobia — fear of wisdom. The Jesus death cult apparently swept into the heavens by dodgy biblical Rapture 'evidence' and solving ostracised film director Woody Allen's conundrum: 'I'm not afraid of death. I just don't want to be around when it happens.' The billionaire classes and their bland hand-picked associates' dreamscape was savaging democracies. Carving CEO-governing fiefdoms from the chaos; serviced by non-unionised labour, AI robots and former US special forces Erik 'Blackwater' Prince's mercenary-multitudes patrolling privatised frontiers against feral masses' drones for pitchforks. 'End times fascism is a darkly festive fatalism — a final refuge for those who find it easier to celebrate destruction than imagine living without supremacy,' Klein and Taylor write. In memoriam Anticipating intelligent life traversing immense voids possessed of state-of-the-art scanners, human-extinction pessimists propose burying a titanium sarcophagus on the Moon. A courtesy for future Socialist cosmic travellers seeking 'are we alone' answers. The sarcophagus' contents recalling Earth's once majestic vistas, oceans, flora and fauna before climate change's ravages; joined by Homo sapiens ' arts, culture, sport and other feats eked from a barbarous history trolled by 'greed is good and tax is bad' mantras. Our species' epitaph, borrowed from quantum physicist Albert Einstein: 'Two things are infinite; the universe and stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.' Malema: Zuma's MK party wants to undermine EFF under the guise of ‘black unity'
EFF leader Julius Malema Economic Freedom Fighters leader Zuma has been advocating for the unification of so-called black parties to challenge the ANC and the On Wednesday Malema said Zuma was being hypocritical, given that his own MK party was founded quite recently (in December 2023). 'If you wanted to call for unity of people, you should have joined the EFF and not formed a parallel organisation,' Malema said outside the home of Malema questioned why the EFF was often the target of such calls for the unification of 'black parties'. 'Why is this unity of black parties only directed at the EFF? They never complain that the 'Every time it's the EFF. We are not going to allow that. You can see it's not black unity; it's an agenda to destroy the EFF. Why are they not giving you a report about black unity with the Parties such as The relationship between the two parties On Wednesday Malema said he would not work with Shivambu and did not want to involve himself in his problems, referring to 'Where was he going? He is not our problem. We are in parliament, we are working in parliament. If he comes into parliament, he will find us rolling,' Malema said of his former second-in-command's fate. 'The parliament now is run by young people; young people are running that thing. If he comes there and thinks he can impose himself on them, they are already ready for him. You can be rest assured that he will not do anything to undermine the superior logic of the EFF in that parliament.' Malema said his party would not be intimidated by the experience Shivambu brings to parliament for the MK party. 'If you are saying this person is going to be a holy spirit and be in every committee and boost the MK's presence in those committees, it's practically impossible,' he said. 'We do our work not because we want to outshine everyone but because we genuinely believe in this work and put a lot of effort into researching what we are going to speak about [in parliament].'

Environmental injustice is becoming the new normal – we must resist it

(File photo by Delwyn Verasamy) On this World Environment Day, I find myself reflecting less on trees, oceans, and plastic waste, and more on people's lack of access to clean drinking water and safe sanitation. More particularly, I am thinking about the ways in which systemic environmental injustice is becoming frighteningly normalised by the generalised state of dysfunction in municipalities across South Africa. It is a crisis that is now spreading across historic divisions of class, race, and geography. Whether you live in a township, a rural village, a flat in a so-called 'middle-income' area, or even in the leafy, wealthier suburbs, you are not immune. This crisis is becoming everyone's crisis. And yet, it's still the most marginalised and vulnerable who suffer first and most. I want to share just three examples I personally witnessed in the past month. These are not extreme or isolated events; they are the daily, grinding reality for a large portion of South Africans. They reflect a system of environmental neglect and both government and private-sector-driven pollution that is eroding people's rights and dignity. Orlando Women's Hostel At the Orlando Women's Hostel in Johannesburg, raw sewage has been overflowing from two blocked sewer lines for nearly seven years. The spill has created what can only be described as a lake – a festering, open swamp of human waste flowing past homes, into streets, and eventually into the already heavily polluted Klip River. Adult residents speak of summer days spent holed up indoors to keep out the flies, while children play outside next to the stinking swamp. When I reported it to Johannesburg Water, they unblocked one drain and left. The sewage kept flowing. I was then told it's a housing issue – the hostel falls under municipal housing, and the matter must be referred there. That's where accountability ends. Activists come, journalists come, yet nothing changes. This is not an accident – it's a systemic failure of the state; it is environmental injustice in its most direct and practical sense. A violation of the right to dignity, the right to health, and the constitutional right to a clean and safe environment. WaterWorks informal settlement The irony of the name is not lost on the people of WaterWorks, where water doesn't work at all. WaterWorks is an informal housing settlement. Residents rely on JoJo tanks that are sporadically filled and cleaned by Joburg Water – if at all. When I visited, the tanks hadn't been filled for three days. To make matters even worse, these tanks are scattered far apart, making them hard to access, especially for elderly residents who are forced to pay young people R10 to R20 per trip to carry water. This is money taken from already meagre SASSA grants. The toilets in WaterWorks are shared chemical units. One elderly woman related how one night she was suffering from diarrhoea but was too scared to walk alone in the dark at 2am to reach a toilet far from her house. Such daily realities chip away at one's dignity; basic human rights are made conditional, fragile, and unequal – tied to geography and class. Environmental justice is not just about having clean air and protecting flora and fauna; it's the ability to use a toilet safely and access water with dignity. Claremont council flats In Claremont, a small pocket of council flats has had no reliable water for nearly a decade. This cannot be explained by elevation, pressure, or some complicated infrastructure glitch. The community has tried to explain to city authorities that their water challenges are not related to recent maintenance issues or leaking reservoirs. The harsh reality is that Claremont's scattered blocks of flats have been – and remain – forgotten. All residents are asking is to be heard and for a proper investigation to be done. When I met residents, they simply wanted to be acknowledged, to have some short-term solutions implemented – like extra JoJo tanks – and, most of all, clear answers. In the meantime, they've adapted. They keep records of water outages not in months or years, but in life events. 'My firstborn is 11 – I came home from the hospital with no water.' 'My grandson is 6 – when we brought him home, I was fetching water with pots.' 'When my mother had a stroke, I had no water to wash her.' What this reveals so clearly is that the impact of environmental injustice is not abstract. It is intimate. It lives in our births, our deaths, our illnesses – and our everyday survival. What I have briefly outlined are just three cases, all taken within a period of just one month, in just one metro. Multiply that by every small town, every metro, every province, every forgotten township, every rural area – and you can start to see the scale of the crisis and the challenges we need to confront and change. On World Environment Day, we must challenge – in word and deed – the assumption that environmental issues are somehow separate from daily life. The environment is not somewhere 'out there.' It is our sewerage systems, our taps, our rivers, our toilets. And increasingly, those systems are failing – not because of nature or a few bad entities and officials, but because of systemic government mismanagement and indifference, grounded in the structural inequalities that remain deeply embedded in South African society. While environmental injustice is very much about the toxic waste that big industries dump into our rivers, it is also very much about what our own government consciously allows – or directly causes – in places where they think no one is watching, or where no one powerful lives. We simply cannot allow this to continue. If we are serious about justice – environmental, social, or economic – we need to hold all those entities and individuals responsible, accountable. The only way that is going to happen is if we come together, across the very same divisions of class, race, and geography that this crisis traverses. Power can belong to the people.
