Perak MB announces RM1,000 aid for each Gerik bus crash victims' families
Speaking to reporters at the Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun's mortuary, here, this afternoon, Saarani also said Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) will organise a counselling session for the victims' family members .
He also noted UPSI would organise counselling sessions for the family members and expressed hope that the injured will recover soon.
Also present with Saarani, were Perak Human Resources, Health, National Integration and Indian Affairs Committee chairman A. Sivanesan as well as other state government officials.
Meanwhile, the atmosphere at the hospital's mortuary was a sombre affair as family members of the victims were seen consoling each other following the tragic accident which reportedly claimed 15 lives in Gerik, early this morning.

It is learnt that the post mortem is currently underway on the remains of 13 UPSI students before being released to their respective family members..
Two other bodies are the Gerik Hospital's mortuary.
The fatal crash occurred at 1.10am at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Tasik Banding in Gerik, involving a chartered bus transporting UPSI students back to their campus in Tanjung Malim, and a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that was traveling in the same direction, from Jeli, Kelantan to Gerik.
According to reports, the crash occurred when the bus rear-ended the Alza, causing the bus to overturn and the MPV to veer into a roadside ditch.
A total of 48 victims were accounted for, including 13 who perished at the scene and were taken to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) in Ipoh, and two others who succumbed to their injuries at Gerik Hospital.

Restaurant ordered to close for 2 weeks after woman finds frog in drink
A woman claimed she drank about a quarter of her drink before noticing 'something strange' at the bottom. PETALING JAYA : A restaurant in Sendayan, Negeri Sembilan, was ordered to close for 14 days after it allegedly served a woman an asam boi drink which had a small frog in it. The health ministry's food safety and quality division inspected the restaurant last Friday and found that it failed to meet food safety standards, Berita Harian reported. The restaurant at Jalan Pusat Dagangan Sendayan 3 was also issued two compound notices. In a video that went viral on TikTok, a woman said she drank about a quarter of her drink before noticing 'something strange' at the bottom. 'I stirred the drink… and that's when I saw the frog. It looked just like an asam boi. I was speechless,' she said in the video caption. Checks by Berita Harian found that the video received around 2.1 million views, over 56,000 likes, and more than 4,000 comments.

Indonesian jailed two years, nine months for smuggling eight migrants
The accused is escorted out of the courtroom at the Kuching Court Complex. — Photo by Kentigern Minggu KUCHING (Aug 5): An Indonesian man was sentenced by the High Court here today to two years and nine months' imprisonment for smuggling eight migrants from his home country. Judicial Commissioner Zaleha Mohd Yusuf Pan meted out the sentence against the accused, 34, after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 26J of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) Act 2007. This section provides for a maximum prison sentence of five years, a fine of up to RM250,000, or both upon conviction. The court also ordered that his sentence take effect from the date of his arrest, July 22, 2023. The accused committed the offence beside a shop premises along Jalan Batu Kawa here on the said date, at about 9.01pm. According to the facts of the case, a police team stopped a black Perodua Alza travelling beside the shop and found that the driver, later identified as the accused, was transporting eight other individuals to an undisclosed location. Further investigation revealed that all the individuals were Indonesian nationals. A report from the Malaysian Immigration Department stated that two of the eight had no record of entering or exiting Malaysia, while the remaining six did. However, their travel records indicated that they had overstayed in the country. The two were later charged under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, while the remaining six were charged under Section 15(1)(c) of the same Act. All of the migrants have since been sentenced accordingly. Therefore, the accused was found to have committed an offence under Section 26J of the Atipsom Act 2007. Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Afiq Safly Nor Kazly prosecuted the case, while the accused was represented by lawyer Ranbir Singh Sangha. Court crime smuggled migrants
