Mortar bomb near Menora Tunnel sparks 15km jam, North-South Expressway reopens after safe detonation
Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin confirmed the route is now safe.
'Yes, it's safe to pass through,' he said when contacted by Harian Metro last night.
The object, identified as an 81mm mortar bomb from the Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) category, was discovered around 9.30am during landscaping works.
A supervisor alerted highway patrol officers, and a police report was lodged at Jelapang police station at 12.15pm.
The Perak police bomb squad, assisted by its Ipoh district counterpart, carried out a high-order electrical detonation.
'The bomb was intact and safely destroyed without any loss of life or property,' said Noor Hisam.
The discovery prompted a temporary closure of both northbound and southbound lanes between Kuala Kangsar and Ipoh, causing a 15km jam.
All lanes were reopened by 3.44pm, according to PLUS Malaysia Berhad.

Sabarodzi said the duo, both in their 20s, were thrown out from the lorry and died at the scene. The other two, aged 40 and 30, sustained minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. It took nearly two hours to clear the road, causing traffic congestion.

PETALING JAYA: A devastating road accident on the North-South Expressway near Sungkai has resulted in two fatalities and left two others hospitalized following a collision between commercial vehicles. Lorry driver seriously hurt after express bus crashes into two vehicles on NSE
MELAKA, Aug 4 — A lorry driver sustained serious leg injuries after an express bus carrying nine passengers collided with the lorry and a trailer at Kilometre 220.5 on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) northbound early this morning. Melaka Zone 2 Fire and Rescue Department chief, Fire Superintendent Zulkhairani Ramli, said the 23-year-old driver of the seven-tonne lorry sustained injuries to his right leg after being pinned to his seat in the incident, which occurred at around 1am. 'The fire department received a distress call at 1.02 am, after which one fire engine and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle, involving 10 personnel from the Alor Gajah Fire and Rescue Station, were dispatched to the scene. 'The rescue team arrived at the scene at 1.22 am and found that the accident had involved an express bus, a lorry, and a trailer. The lorry driver was trapped inside his vehicle,' he said in a statement today. He said the 64-year-old express bus driver, his passengers, and the 56-year-old 14-tonne trailer driver escaped unhurt. According to him, 15 minutes after being extricated by the rescue team, the lorry driver was transported by the EMRS unit to Rembau Hospital in Negeri Sembilan. Zulkhairani said, based on information, all three vehicles were travelling in the left lane of the highway. The express bus is believed to have crashed into the lorry and the trailer. — Bernama
