Banyana Banyana coach Dr Desiree Ellis has defended her decision to rotate the starting line-up after a 1-1 draw with Tanzania, insisting her selections were good enough to win the match.
The result, played at the Honneur Stadium in Oujda, Morocco, on Friday night, means South Africa remain top of Group C on goal difference ahead of Mali — both sides sitting on four points — but a win would have secured qualification to the knockout stages with a game to spare.
The defending champions were shocked in the 24th minute when Tanzania captain Opa Clement gave the Twiga Stars the lead. Banyana responded in the second half with an equaliser from Bambanani Mbane, but it wasn't enough to secure all three points.
Ellis' decision to make four changes to the starting line-up that defeated Ghana 2-0 in the opener raised eyebrows. Most notably, she dropped in-form goalkeeper Andile Dlamini in favour of Kaylin Swart.
Swart cost us in the World Cup, and she's going to cost us again today 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 — Dr Phillips🇿🇦 (@Phillip22123860) July 11, 2025

She also introduced Lonathemba Mhlongo, Siyabulela Holweni and Kgaelebane Mohlakoana in place of Tiisetso Makhubela, Amogelang Motau and Lebohang Ramalepe.
Despite the public scrutiny, Ellis was clear that she stood by her choices.
'We had a good enough team to get a result, they scored early, and we had a chance to score before they could – we didn't put it away, it is the nature of the game,' said Ellis.
She acknowledged the missed opportunity to secure early qualification but praised her side's fighting spirit after going behind.
'We didn't get the result we wanted but we are still in it. I thought the comeback was good, we could have won it as we had a couple of chances, but that's how the game goes.'
'We said before the match that no game is easy, we saw how Nigeria scored in the last minute, that's how difficult the games are going to be, but you have to take your chances.
'We felt if we get the three points we would go through to the next round already, but it was not to be, there is still some more work to be done.'

She added that Tanzania came into the match desperate for points and managed to disrupt Banyana's style of play.
'There is no easy team anymore, they hadn't picked up any points, we knew they needed to win at all costs and they came with a plan, made us play like a team under pressure when we were not under pressure, playing into their hands at times with the long ball, but still there is all to play for in the group,' said Ellis.
Still unbeaten in their last 13 WAFCON matches — with 10 wins and three draws — Banyana have shown they know how to fight.
'This team has shown they have the grit, they have the courage and the resilience to fight back and get the result that we deserve.'
South Africa will now face Mali in their final Group C fixture on Monday night at 9pm South African time, while Tanzania take on Ghana at the same time.

Springboks back Junior Boks to go all the way at World Champs

The Junior Springboks are unbeaten at the World Rugby U20 Champs, and are gunning to go all the way, with them up against Argentina in the semis. The double World Cup winning Springboks are backing the Junior Boks to go all the way and triumph at the World Rugby U20 Championship being battled out in Italy. The Junior Boks are gearing up for a massive semifinal encounter against fellow Southern Hemisphere side, Argentina, at the Stadio Luigi Zaffanella in Viadana on Monday night (kick-off 8.30pm). It has been a fantastic campaign for the Junior Boks so far, with them cruising through the pool phase unbeaten, after hammering Australia 73-17 and Scotland 73-14, while they also dispatched defending champions, England, 32-22, which in the end knocked them out of the semifinal running. They now turn their attention to Argentina, who they beat in the U20 Rugby Championship (TRC) in Gqeberha a few months ago, 36-25, and they will be gunning for a similar, if not better, performance than that. It has in fact been a terrific turnaround since the TRC, where the Junior Boks went down to Australia 29-24 and New Zealand 48-45, with their only win coming against Argentina, to finish third in the competition. They turned that around spectacularly in Italy to thrash the Aussies in their pool encounter, and backed it up with their results against England and Scotland. Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick, speaking ahead of their clash against Italy in Gqeberha on Saturday, praised the effort of the youngsters and backed them to the hilt. Go all the way 'I remember watching them here against New Zealand (in the TRC) earlier this year. They lost that game and they also lost against Australia (in the same competition),' said Stick. 'So to see them now giving Australia 70 points, and also Scotland 70 points as well. What those young men are doing is great for us as a country and hopefully they can go all the way. 'I have been there (with the Junior Boks) in 2005. To win a Junior World Cup changes a lot of peoples lives, and hopefully those boys can also create those memories. They have already made us proud and we hope they can go all the way and become world champions.' Springbok captain for the match last weekend, Salmaan Moerat, who has represented the Junior Boks himself, was also effusive in his praise for the rising generation of future Springbok stars. 'We are extremely proud of them and the way they have been playing. Especially the step up they made from losing against Australia in the (U20) Rugby Championship, to beating them convincingly at the World Champs really says a lot about them as a team,' said Moerat. 'You can see that there are a number of potential future stars who will become really big players one day, and we wish them all of the very best. We really are supporting them to go all the way.'

'Amazing,' says Willie le Roux about 100th Test for Boks

Willie le Roux is now the eighth Springbok centurion, and will likely slip behind Damian Willemse and Aphelele Fassi in the fullback pecking order. Springbok centurion Willie le Roux runs onto the field before the start of their match against Italy at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Saturday night. Picture: Anton Geyser/Gallo Images Saturday was a special day for Springboks stalwart Willie le Roux and the city of Gqeberha as the Boks turned on the style to whitewash Italy 45-0 in their second Test of the incoming series at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. For Le Roux it was his landmark 100th appearance for the national team, and although he produced a mixed bag, with a few mistakes coupled with some moments of brilliance, including a chipped try assist, it was the perfect way to celebrate with a big result. It will now be interesting to see what the Boks' plans are for 35-year-old Le Roux, who is the eighth Springbok centurion, as he has arguably been passed in the fullback pecking order by Damian Willemse and Aphelele Fassi. Springbok dream 'I said it earlier in the week, that it was my dream to play for the Springboks since I was six years old. I wanted to play rugby, I wanted to make it work, even if I had to go a different route,' said Le Roux after the match. 'So just to be here today with my wife and my family, to celebrate this milestone of my 100th cap in South Africa was amazing. My phone has never, even with the two World Cup (wins) combined, been as busy as this week. 'It is quite emotional and to just try and keep away from all that (was tough). There was a job to do first, so it was quite hard to try and balance that emotion and not do something stupid at the start (of the match), because you want to show something. 'When I ran out on my own it was very emotional and I didn't know what to do with myself. I was just waiting for the team to come out. So it was very special and I am thankful for it.' For Gqeberha it was a fantastic night with the Springboks finally back in the city in all their splendour, and a full house of boisterous fans were on hand to cheer their team from the first whistle to the last, as they produced a terrific atmosphere. It was the first game in the city since 2021, when they played Argentina in the Rugby Championship behind closed doors due to Covid, and the first in front of fans, when they played Australia, also in the Rugby Championship. Eastern Cape locals A number of members in the Springboks squad are from the region, including coach Rassie Erasmus, assistant coach Mzwandile Stick, regular captain Siya Kolisi and wing Makazole Mapimpi, so it was a special homecoming for them as well. 'It was really nice (to be here). As I have said before different stadiums have different vibes. Bloemfontein, Mbombela and PE (Gqeberha) all have a special vibe in the sense that while you warm up the whole crowd is in already,' said Erasmus. 'In other stadiums, only after the warmup and just as the Test is going to begin does everyone come in. So you already feel the support from the warmup. That's not to say other stadiums are not supportive, they all have different atmospheres that carry us through the game. 'But this was a loud crowd, even during a few of our difficult spells, they were lifting us and we all enjoyed it. As for (those of) us that come from here, it was extra special. You could see Stokke (Stick), was a bit emotional, as well as Mapimpi and myself. 'It's a place where we would love rugby to thrive, because it is where we started our rugby journeys, and were taught the ropes. This crowd misses the Springboks and international rugby and they showed that through their support. Even with Willie who isn't from here, they loved and supported him. So it was baie lekker.'

Rassie van der Dussen out to prove something with fresh-faced Proteas in Zimbabwe, New Zealand series

Rassie van der Dussen is set to lead a rejuvenated Proteas squad featuring promising young talent in the upcoming tri-series against Zimbabwe and New Zealand, aiming to build momentum ahead of the World Cup. Picture: AFP The last time Rassie van der Dussen led the Proteas in a limited overs series, it did not go well. Starting against hosts Zimbabwe in Harare on Monday, in the T20 tri-series also involving New Zealand, Van der Dussen is confident things will go better this time. In 2024, Van der Dussen skippered SA in an ODI against Ireland and three T20Is against the West Indies and the Proteas lost every single clash. That, however, was a long time ago for the Proteas and they also have some new ICC silverware in the form of the World Test Championship mace in their trophy cabinet. With Van der Dussen returning to the side at the age of 36, he still has plenty to prove for the Proteas.
