Commerical mining not approved, but excavators dig deep in Nurpur Bedi

1 2 3 4 5 Patiala: Rampant illegal mining continues in Nurpur Bedi and villages within the Anandpur Sahib subdivisions of Ropar district, especially along the Swan river, near Bhalan and Haripur Plata. Although no commercially approved mining sites existed in Nurpur Bedi of the Ropar division, large-scale sand and gravel extraction persisted, raising serious concerns about environmental degradation and public safety. Mining department officials stated that only four Commercial Mining Sites (CMS) were approved in the Anandpur Sahib division, including Nangran Kalmot, Chandpur, Majari, and Bhanglan, while two Public Mining Sites (PMS) were approved in Ahlowal and Mahlewal of Ropar division. Sources indicated that illegal operations were particularly active at night near Haripur Plata, where approximately 20 stone crushers operated. These crushers were reportedly supplied by unauthorised mining activities; however, there was no control over illegal mining in the area. The situation was particularly alarming in Sainsonwal and Swara villages, where mining was reportedly conducted at night to evade detection. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo This unchecked excavation directly impacted the Algran Bridge, whose well caps supporting the piers were severely damaged. Consequently, the administration declared the bridge unsafe, leading to its closure for over a year. In Swara, Behinhara, and Saidpur villages, nearly 45 crushers received raw materials sourced through illegal means. The downstream region of Saidpur became another hotspot for illicit mining, endangering the piers of the Agampur Bridge — a vital connector linking the revered Takht Shri Kesgarh Sahib to several districts, including Hoshiarpur, Pathankot, Jalandhar, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, and Tarn Taran. The site is between Agampur - Saidpur villages. This illegal mining is carried out in connivance with the authorities, including mining officials and cops. While standing at Agampur bridge, one can clearly see with naked eyes the illegal activity in villages during night. Due to continuous illegal mining, the piers of Agampur bridge have been damaged, forcing the administration to take immediate action and carry out its repair work," said Gurtej Singh, local resident. Environmentalists and local residents have raised alarms over irreversible damage to river ecology, water tables, and infrastructure. Despite repeated concerns and previous incidents, enforcement action remained limited, casting doubt on the effectiveness of regulatory mechanisms. "Illegal mining is rampant in our village during night hours. During the day, it becomes clearly visible at the site that the miners have extracted the sand and gravel at large scale, up to 40 feet deep. Only a week ago, some villagers have confiscated the machines and handed them over to the police, but no action was taken. Later, the machines involved in illegal mining were released," said Amandeep Singh of Bhalan village. "Large scale illegal mining has put our village in danger, especially during floods. Floodwater will soon erode the remaining area, which has turned vulnerable. Mining is usually carried out in land that belong to some villager, who along with village panchayat are paid good amount of money," said a young resident Mandeep Singh from Bhalan village. Commenting on the issue, district mining officer Tushar Goyal said, "We have continuously taken actions against illegal miners, and our teams, along with the police, remain vigilant. Only four commercial mining sites are approved and fall under the Anandpur Sahib area in the district, while two public mining sites are in the Ropar division. However, mining is not permitted at night. We will conduct raids at these sites to investigate any illegal mining. " Goyal added, "Two of the six piers of Agampur village were damaged in the past and tenders for its repair were being floated. The damage was due to several reasons, including illegal mining. We are constructing creek that will allow river water to cross through all six piers". Ropar SSP Gulneet Khurana added, "We have recently taken action against illegal mining in Bhalan village, although several cases have been registered in the past. No recent illegal mining complaints have been received, although we typically receive noise pollution complaints at some crushers. The pollution board is authorised to address noise pollution. We will inspect the aforementioned sites to counter illegal mining. "

Three arrested after ‘suspicious powder' seized from scrap turns out to be MD pegged at Rs 1.25 crore

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Three people were arrested by the anti-narcotics squad of the city police after a 'suspicious powder' seized from two mini trucks carrying plastic scrap turned out to be mephedrone drugs. Commissioner of police Pravin Pawar said that this could possibly be the tip of an iceberg. "We are probing this case from all possible angles. Apart from the three accused arrested in the case, our teams are trying to arrest some more accused," Pawar told TOI. Police authorities said that a total of about 2,500 grams of drugs valued at over Rs 1.25 crore were seized. The seizure started with the anti-narcotics squad on June 21 intercepting two mini trucks that were found carrying suspicious powder covered in the plastic scrap lifted by a scrap vendor from a pharmaceutical company. They have been booked under sections 21(c), 22(c), 8(c), 25, and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The case was officially registered at MIDC Waluj police station shortly after midnight on Tuesday, based on the complaint filed by PSI Amol Maske from the Anti-Narcotics Cell. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo According to officials, the accused used scrap collected from a pharmaceutical company in MIDC Waluj as a cover to transport the banned MD-like substance. The seized material was found stored inside a godown belonging to one of the accused in Sajapur. The police recovered three consignments: 1.111 kg of a white powder-like substance resembling MD, valued at Rs 55.55 lakh; 401 gm of a similar substance worth Rs 20.05 lakh; and 961 gm of the powder estimated at Rs 48.05 lakh. The total seizure is valued at about Rs 1.25 crore. Police officials said that the contraband was transported in plastic drums concealed under scrap material, possibly to evade detection. "These synthetic drugs were apparently meant to be sold locally and stored in the godown with the intent of illegal distribution," said inspector Geeta Bagwade, who is investigating the case. She stated that a detailed probe is underway and forensic teams have been roped in to confirm the nature of the powder seized. The suspects allegedly failed to provide any valid documents or explanation regarding the transport and storage of the chemical substances. The incident has raised concerns once again about the misuse of industrial waste routes for trafficking drugs, especially from pharma units in MIDC Waluj belt — a zone that has been under scrutiny since the Rs 250 crore drug bust by DRI and Ahmedabad crime branch in Oct 2023.
