Indian Cricket Board mourns the passing of India spinner Dilip Doshi, who died at 77
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] June 24 (ANI): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expressed profound grief and sorrow at the demise of former India cricketer and left-arm spinner, Dilip Doshi, who passed away at the age of 77, according to a BCCI media advisory.
Doshi passed away due to heart issues in London, where he had lived for several decades. With a classical left-armer's action, Doshi scalped 114 Test wickets in 33 appearances, including six five-wicket hauls.
He also left his mark in the ODIs and finished with 22 wickets in 15 ODIs while maintaining an economy of 3.96. Doshi represented Saurashtra, Bengal, Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire in first-class cricket and picked up 898 wickets in 238 appearances at 26.58.
Doshi followed in the footsteps of the famous spin quartet of the 1970s and made his debut at the age of 32.
At Nottinghamshire, the West Indies legend Garfield Sobers heavily influenced the left-arm spinner. He made a silent exit from international cricket in the 1980s and gave a compelling account of his cricketing days in his autobiography Spin Punch.
Among his accomplished feats, Doshi played an immaculate role with his five-wicket haul in the Melbourne Test of 1981, which helped India orchestrate a memorable victory.
The BCCI stands in solidarity with his family, loved ones and the cricketing community in mourning this irreparable loss.

He was a true artist of spin bowling, a gentleman both on and off the field, and a dedicated servant of Indian cricket. When you're talking about batting exploits in England, scoring twin hundreds, the names he's being compared with are legends like Dilip Vengsarkar, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, and Sunil Gavaskar. But here's the remarkable part -- he's also a wicketkeeper. That's what makes it almost unbelievable,' Manjrekar said at the end of play on Day 4. 'I know someone like Kumar Sangakkara had a phenomenal batting record, but he wasn't quite the keeper that Rishabh Pant is. Pant is India's first and last choice as a wicketkeeper in this Test side -- and that says a lot,' he added In the end, Manjrekar said that there are four Tests still remaining in the England tour, and there are chances that Pant can go ahead of Dravid (6) in scoring the most tons for the national team in England 'If you look at the numbers -- most hundreds by Indians in Tests in England -- Rahul Dravid leads with six. Back from long-term injury, Sambit Pradhan aims for glory at Rugby Premier League
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 24 (ANI): Hyderabad Heroes are cruising in the Rugby Premier League (RPL) at the moment as they stand on top of the points table with six wins in seven games to their name and are the first team to qualify for the playoffs. The key to their success is not just the impressive performances of marquee players like Joji Nasova, Kevin Wekesa or Terio Tamani, but also Indian players like Javed Hussain and Sukumar Hembrom who are equally contributing to the team's success. Another such player in their ranks is forward Sambit Pradhan, who is a regular player for the Heroes and has featured in all of their matches. Talking about the mood and environment in his team's locker room, Sambit said as quoted by a press release from RPL, 'The atmosphere in our team is very good. Despite losing our last match (against Bengaluru Bravehearts), no one pointed out any mistakes or blamed anyone. Even our coach (DJ Forbes) held a burger party for us to lift our spirits as we discussed our plan for the matches ahead.' Sambit also highlighted the impact of foreign players on Indians and what they could learn from the seasoned internationals. He said, 'I never thought I could be playing with such big international rugby stars whom I have only seen on TV before this. They are very technically sound, they have nailed down the basics. But more than technical, they are very calm while playing and hence don't panic and make mistakes. We Indian players struggle with and to minimise our mistakes, we need to play with a level head.' 'In three to four years, with RPL, new Indian players will rise up through the ranks, improve their skills and shine on this platform. Like my teammate Javed Hussain who is doing really well and has gotten famous because of his strong performances, more players will come into the limelight,' he added. The 27-year-old hails from Adaspur, a village in Cuttack district, Odisha and comes from a family of farmers. His journey in rugby started quite late when he was studying at Biju Pattnaik College in Bhubaneswar, where he spent most of his childhood. About how his journey started, he shared, 'One of the older guys in college asked me to come and play rugby. I wasn't that interested, but he said I would get to play in a stadium, which enticed me because I had never been in one. That is how I started playing.' 'I then played the senior nationals for Odisha, and that is how my career started. In 2015, I went to the senior nationals in Bihar, where I got very serious about my game since I was the youngest in my team and wanted to prove myself,' the player added. Sambit was regularly playing in tournaments for his state and clubs however, in 2019, he got injured and left the sport for three years. 'I broke my hand while playing a tournament in Amritsar and couldn't play for three years. I got it operated on at a government hospital and was scared if I will ever be able to play rugby again. The doctors assured me that I will be able to continue which gave me a lot of confidence,' he concluded. Sambit worked hard on his recovery despite doing a part-time job at a school where he used to teach children various sports. After three years, in 2022, Sambit started playing again for the Bhubaneswar Rugby Club and has now made his way back to the elite level with the Rugby Premier League. (ANI)

New Delhi [India] June 24 (ANI): Hayley Matthews' heroics against South Africa has seen the West Indies star close in on top spot on the latest ICC Women's T20I Batter Rankings, according to the ICC website. Matthews scored 147 runs across the three T20I contests at home to lead the West Indies to a drought-breaking 2-1 series triumph and in the process closed in on Beth Mooney for the mantle as the No.1 ranked batter in the shortest format. The 27-year-old improved to a career-best mark of 770 rating points and now trails Mooney by just 24 rating points at the top of the list for T20I batters. A trio of South Africa batters make ground up the rankings following the latest update, with Tazmin Brits (up two spots to sixth), Nadine de Klerk (up three places to 51st) and Annerie Dercksen (up eight rungs to equal 79th) all gaining places after some good efforts against the West Indies. It's a similar story on the updated list for T20I bowlers, with South African pair Nonkululek Mlaba (up six spots to equal eighth) and Ayabonga Khaka (up four places to equal 38th) among the biggest winners. West Indies are boosted by the efforts of spinner Afy Fletcher, with the veteran gaining three places to 12th on the rankings for T20I bowlers for her two wickets apiece in the second and third T20Is, while Matthews maintains her place at the top of the list for T20I all-rounders. The final match of the ODI portion of the series between West Indies and South Africa also saw some changes to the latest ODI rankings, with Brits the big winners up the list for batters.
