What's driving China's hunger for Aussie beef as exports soar

Grain-fed beef exports to China have ballooned more than 40 per cent this year – and it's not only because of the Asian superpower's trade war with the US.
Australia has broken records in the beef export industry so far in 2025, up 15 per cent year-on-year, to reach more than 567,000 tonnes by May.
Among the biggest movers has been grain-fed exports to Greater China – which includes Taiwan and Hong Kong – rising 41 per cent to 57,000 tonnes alone.
Overall beef exports to Greater China are up 30 per cent this year, rising to 117,000 tonnes in the latest data.
These figures reveal how Australian beef exporters have been a big winner of Beijing and Washington's ongoing trade war sparked by Donald Trump's tariff regime.
Meat & Livestock Australia general manager of markets Andrew Cox explained the uptick in trade to China had also coincided with a repairing of the political relationship between the two countries in recent years.
China only lifted the last of its unofficial trade sanctions on Australian products like meat, wine and barley in December last year, which stemmed from tensions between Beijing and the previous federal government.
'And then of course, more recently, there's been some increased demand because our key competitor in that premium space in China, the US, has been effectively shut-out due to the trade relationship between China and the US.'
China previously imported AU$2.5 billion worth of American meat but those products have virtually disappeared from supermarket shelves since Mr Trump's 'Liberation Day' as both countries hit each other with tariffs above 100 per cent.
The growing middle class
China's growing middle class and rising incomes have seen beef become a more popular source of protein – particularly premium cuts like wagyu – than it was historically.
A snapshot collated by Meat & Livestock Australia shows 74 per cent of affluent Chinese consumers believe Australian beef is 'the most delicious', while it also scored highly for freshness and safety.
Mr Cox, who has been in the industry for 20 years, said he remembered when Chinese trade figures were a 'rounding error' on the export database.
'Now they're the world's biggest beef importer and it's got more runway to grow,' he said.
'We've seen urbanisation, an emerging and growing middle class numbering in the hundreds of millions. And they have a demand for quality and safe protein.'
Tammi Jonas, a farmer and spokeswoman for the Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance, predicted China to hoover up Aussie beef after the tariffs were announced in April.
'China has just turned immediately and said, 'Yep, that looks great. We'll have more Australian beef',' she told news.com.au this week.
Ms Jonas, however, has also warned of the potential for beef prices in Australian grocery stores to go up as exporters send more stock overseas.
'China buys a full range of everything from cheaper cuts to the more expensive ones,' she said.
'They have a rapidly growing middle class, so they demand more of the premium beef than historically they did.
'And Japan is the same, they both like a lot of the premium cuts from here.
'So that's direct competition with premium cuts in Australian supermarkets.'
Tariffs and US trade
The US President, in his April 2 speech, singled out an unbalanced beef trade as justification for slapping a blanket 10 per cent tariff on all Australian-made products.
'They won't take any of our beef. They don't want it because they don't want it to affect their farmers and, you know, I don't blame them, but we're doing the same thing right now, starting at midnight tonight,' Mr Trump said.
Despite this, US importers have taken in 167,000 tonnes of Australian beef in 2025 – with its 32 per cent growth outstripping that of China.
Australia's meat exports to the US totalled around $4 billion in 2024, while America has been dealing with drought conditions that have squeezed domestic cattle supply.
It was revealed on Friday that the Australian government was considering relaxing biosecurity laws to allow more American beef into the country as part of tariff negotiations.
Beef from the US was banned in 2003 after the breakout of mad cow disease, and since 2019 there have been strict conditions for meat products to enter Australia.
The move has seen some pushback from farmers, with National Farmers Federation president David Jochinke telling the Sydney Morning Herald that protecting biosecurity was paramount for the industry.
'Let's be abundantly clear, our biosecurity isn't a bargaining chip,' he said.
'We have the world's best standards, backed by science, and that's how it needs to stay.'
Cattle Australia chief executive Chris Parker on Friday said US beef producers have had access to Australian markets since 2019, provided they could show animals were born raised and slaughtered in the US.
'Our position is that the US needs to be able to demonstrate it can either trace cattle born in Mexico and Canada, or has systems that are equivalent to Australia's traceability, before imports of meat could occur from non-US cattle,' Dr Parker said.
'Cattle Australia is in ongoing communication with the Federal Government regarding this issue and the vital importance that our science-based biosecurity system is not compromised as part of trade discussions with any country.'
Domestic prices
So far beef prices has remained steady for farmers, as demand from importers means strong paydays along the supply chain, Ms Jonas said.
'The big exporters (in Australia) are rubbing their hands and just filling that market rapidly,' she said.
'And the more that market opens up, the more pressure it puts on domestic pricing.
'So supermarket beef, like we like we said several months ago, supermarkets beef is definitely going to keep going up in price.'
Mr Cox said predicting prices was like weather forecasting but added that Australia already exported 75 per cent of the beef produced here.
'For the Australian farmer to be sustainable for that cultural sector, we need customers all around the world,' he said.
'We produce more food than we eat domestically and we're highly reliant on export markets.'

St George immediately followed up the July results with reverse circulation and diamond drilling to begin exploring the deposit's extent. Global supply chain shocks, triggered by China's export restrictions on rare earths and magnets, have intensified interest in non-China sources. Dr Reuter IR chief executive officer Dr Eva Reuter noted St George's timing was ideal for engaging with European investors, as industries seek secure rare earth supply chains and investors pursue high-quality critical minerals companies. Araxá's carbonatite-hosted deposit, broadly similar to MP Materials' Mountain Pass project in California and Lynas' Mt Weld project in Western Australia, offers timely competitive advantages, especially with its high-grade mineralisation starting at surface. Past drilling results at Araxá confirm more than 500 intercepts grading better than 1 per cent and up to 8 per cent niobium pentoxide, accompanied by up to 33 per cent TREO. The Araxá project benefits from regional infrastructure, a skilled workforce and has support via a Brazilian government funding initiative and a cooperation agreement with Minas Gerais for expedited approvals. St George is also exploring US market opportunities, including potential listings and downstream partnerships for rare earths and niobium products. It could potentially build on other recent models, such as the US Defence Department's recent $400 million investment in MP Materials' Mountain Pass project and the company's magnet supply deal with Apple. The Frankfurt listing catapults St George into a prime position to attract European capital, amplifying its role as a non-China alternative for critical minerals. With Araxá's high-grade rare earths and niobium hosted in the carbonatite-rich Barreira complex, St George is well-positioned to meet global demand, supported by strategic partnerships and ongoing drilling to unlock further value. NAB flags $130 million hit after underpaying staff, as payroll problems widen

National Australia Bank (NAB) is flagging a $130 million financial hit, revealing it underpaid staff wages and entitlements, as its payroll problems run deeper than first thought. The major bank was warned its operating expenses for the financial year 2025 are now forecast to rise 4.5 per cent from the previous year, due to the cost of reviewing and remediating "payroll issues". It comes more than five years after NAB first commenced a payroll review, which saw the bank repay millions to underpaid staff. In an ASX release, NAB said its "payroll review and remediation is ongoing, and the total costs remain uncertain". NAB chief executive Andrew Irvine said the costs of rectifying and remediating payroll issues were "disappointing" and the issue "must be fixed". The bank's people and culture executive, Sarah White, said: "Paying our colleagues correctly is an absolute priority." "We are sorry and apologise to our colleagues that this has happened and have commenced remediating those impacted." In 2019, NAB launched a payroll review, which cost the bank $250 million between FY2020 and FY2022, while problems were identified with its payroll system. Finance Sector Union (FSU) said it had expressed its disbelief with NAB that "one of the nation's biggest banks has once again failed to pay its workers correctly". FSU national president Wendy Streets said the scale of underpayment was "nothing short of systemic wage theft", especially when Australians are struggling through the worst cost-of-living crisis in decades. The union has demanded that NAB immediately issue an apology and explain how this was allowed to happen. NAB said it had engaged the Fair Work Ombudsman and the FSU and was keeping its employees informed, including contacting those directly affected. The bank does not disclose how many staff have been affected but the payroll review is for its Australia-based colleagues and Australian colleagues working overseas. NAB has reported its quarterly cash earnings of $1.77 billion for the quarter ending this June, 1 per cent lower compared with the quarterly average over the first half of 2025. CEO Mr Irvine said the group's Business and Private Banking business lending grew 4 per cent over the quarter, while Australian home lending grew 2 per cent. Despite the cost blowout for the payroll issue, the CEO said his company "remains optimistic about the outlook" and is "well-placed to manage NAB for the long-term and deliver sustainable growth and returns for shareholders". NAB's share price had risen by 2 per cent to $39.98 per share at 2pm AEST.

Australia's largest steelmaker is feeling the impact of 'cyclically soft conditions and global uncertainty' as impairment costs and US President Donald Trump's tariff policy crushes profits. In its latest market announcement, BlueScope Steel reported profits came in at $84m, down $722m on FY 2024 results. 'Disappointingly, there has been a delay in achieving our expectations of the BlueScope Coated Products business,' BlueScope chief executive Mark Vassella said in a statement to the ASX. 'It remains core to our North American growth strategy, and we continue to invest in the turnaround of the business.' BlueScope described 2025 as a 'challenging year', saying softer conditions in the steel market overall and uncertainty about the US tariff policy also weighed on the result. From June 4, 2025, Australian steel and aluminium imports to the US were subject to a 50 per cent tariff. This is an increase from a 25 per cent tariff imposed on March 12. Australia overall faces a 10 per cent blanket tariff on trade going into the US, the equal lowest in the world. The latest Newspoll published on Monday found that 42 per cent of the 1283 voters surveyed were more concerned by 'Donald Trump's tariffs' than 'China's military threat'. BlueScope also stated the challenges regionally, including higher energy costs and lower production volumes, weighed on profits. 'While a softer performance than last year, this level of profitability in the face of the cyclically soft conditions and global uncertainty during the year represents a resilient result, underpinned by our diversified portfolio of quality assets and multi-domestic strategy,' Mr Vassella said. Despite the falls, Mr Vassella predicts tariffs would be a net positive for the business due to the North Star mill in the US producing three million tonnes of steel, 10 times the amount the business makes in Australia. BlueScope will pay a final dividend of 30 cents per share. Looking forward, the business has guided underlying earnings before interest and tax will come in between $550ms and $620m over the next year. This would still be down from the $738.2m achieved over the last year. 'While macroeconomic conditions remain mixed, our multi-domestic strategy of prioritising in-market production for in-market consumption sets us up strongly to manage the current environment,' Mr Vassella said. 'We are seeing signs of recovery in Australian construction and improving spreads in the US.'
