Mookie Betts says 'body's just kind of eating itself' as mystery illness sidelines Dodgers star
Betts didn't play in Los Angeles' two regular-season-opening wins in Tokyo last week and he wasn't able to take the field for a pair of preseason games at home Sunday and Monday against the Angels.
The 2018 American League MVP came into spring straining at 175 pounds and is now down to 150 as he's been unable to keep down any solid food.
"I'm scared to eat, so I really don't know what to do," he told reporters.
Blood tests and vitals have "come back really, really clean" so doctors are at a loss to explain this health scare, Betts said.
"I'm practicing all day and my body's just kind of eating itself and so it's hard to not fuel it," Betts said. "And so every time, literally, every time I fuel my body, I throw it up."
The 32-year-old said he started feeling sick two days before his team jetted off to Japan and the long plan ride only exacerbated the situation.
"So got on the plane, I thought I would at least give myself a couple days to kind of heal and then the plane ride was brutal," he said. "That was one of the worst playing plane rides I ever had."
The team's North American opener is set for Thursday afternoon at home against the Detroit Tigers. At this point, it's unknown when Betts will be able to play again.
Despite the big weight loss, Betts said he wants to play as soon as he can keep food down.
"It's just hard to fathom not eating," he said."So it looks like I'm just going to be light for a little bit. Maybe I have to play uphill a little bit for the beginning of the season. But you know I just want to play, man. I'm tired of sitting, tired of just throwing up, tired of doing all of this."

NFL fans believe Madison Beer and Justin Herbert may have started dating as far back as December. That's because they have unearthed a picture of the singer, 26, at a Los Angeles Chargers game on December 19. She was at SoFi Stadium to watch her rumored beau in a Thursday Night Football game between the Chargers and Denver Broncos. Those same fans also noticed just how impressive Herbert played that night, with some claiming he was out to impress the pop star. Against one of the NFL's meanest defenses, Herbert completed 23 of his 31 passes for 284 yards, two touchdowns and an interception as the Charges won 34-27. There was one particular highlight, which saw him make a ridiculous throw and lead Los Angeles to 15 points in the fourth quarter. Fans believe Herbert was 'showing off' in that game and they 'need her to attend every game' Upon discovering she was at the game and watching Herbert's highlights, Chargers fans now want her there more often as the new season approaches. One commented: 'Demon showing off lmao. Gonna need her to attend every game I fear.' Another said: 'Bro about to turn into MVP Lamar (Jackson) this year,' referencing the outstanding Baltimore Ravens quarterback. One quipped the Chargers are 'gonna need her in Brazil', referencing their Week 1 game in Sao Paulo against the Kansas City Chiefs. Another bold predicted with Beer watching on, the 'Super Bowl is a lock' and 'Herbert is winning MVP'. Attention was drawn to Beer and Herbert's potential relationship this week when he was spotted on the set of her latest music video on Sunday. The 6ft 6 quarterback, who was once NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, towered over 5ft 6 Beer, who was wearing angel wings as part of the production in Los Angeles. She was spotted at a house in Hancock Park, where the shoot ran throughout the day, wearing what appeared to be a nightshirt. Madison posed with a heart locket and a tiny heart ring. Later she introduced Herbert to various crew members before they left together in Herbert's car. He went on to win that year's Offensive Rookie of the Year prize. He signed a five-year contract worth $262.5m in 2023 but has only made the playoffs twice in five seasons, owing to being in the same division as the Kansas City Chiefs.

Dodgers fans turn on star man after dreadful error leads to humiliating Colorado Rockies loss
Los Angeles Dodgers fans have slammed one of their star players, Teoscar Hernandez, after his critical error lead to a loss to the worst team in baseball, the Colorado Rockies. With Monday night's game tied, a bloop fly ball was hit to right field, with Hernandez in the best position to make the play, as he was running into the path of where it would land. Hernandez was a step slow as the ball hit off his glove and fell to the turf, giving the Rockies a runner in scoring position, which eventually crossed home plate to hand the Dodgers a loss. 'We were playing no doubles, it's a big outfield, I was really far,' Hernandez said after the loss. 'I tried to make the play, I didn't. it came off my glove, unfortunately. Things happen. I just gotta wash it and keep moving forward.' The damage was already done, as Los Angeles holds a small lead in the NL West standings, two games above the San Diego Padres. Fans rallied against Hernandez, with the team hoping to repeat as World Series champions in 2025, with some pointing to his playing in that postseason run as the last redeeming action for the Dodgers star. A collection of social-media messages from LA Dodgers fans turning on Teoscar Hernandez 'Absolutely inexcusable Dodgers lost on the very next at bat because of this Teoscar Hernandez should not spend another inning playing right field the rest of the season,' one Dodgers fan said. 'The Dodgers WILL NOT win a World Series with Teoscar in right field,' a second person stated. 'Teoscar Hernandez will have a 10 minute video compilation of him letting balls drop 1 foot in front of him by the end of the season,' a third fan added. 'Just inexcusable effort from Teoscar in RF these last 2 games and pretty much all season. This effort will cost your team games, like it did tonight, and shouldn't be tolerated, especially during a postseason race,' one final supporter concluded. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts also spoke out on Hernandez's play after the loss, seemingly frustrated with his right fielder. 'He's gotta get better out there,' Roberts said. 'There's just no (other) way to put it. I know there's effort, it's not a lack of effort. We just kind of got to get better.' Moments after the game ended, Los Angeles star Shohei Ohtani was seen visibly upset about the loss in the dugout, with it unknown if he directly blames Hernandez for the defeat to the 89-loss team.
