In case you missed it, Hutson carried the puck across the blue line into the offensive zone, where he was met by a defender. That's when he brought the puck between his skates to the top of the right circle, where he pivoted and briefly turned his back on the goal, before spinning back around and passing the puck between the UConn skater's legs to himself, breaking toward the net, and burying it past goalie

The goal knotted the game at 2, which is how it stood through overtime. BU took the extra point in the shootout as it looked to cement its hold on third place in Hockey East. But the contest goes down as a tie, leaving BU (18-12-2, 12-8-2) at seventh and UConn (17-10-4, 9-8-4) eighth in the PairWise, the system used to seed and select the NCAA Tournament field.

'A fantastic hockey game,' said Cavanaugh. 'I think anybody who had a chance to watch it, it was pretty fast-paced, there were some high-end plays. Just overall, a really great hockey game.'
Weekend plans
The BU-UConn tilt was the perfect prelude to the penultimate weekend of Hockey East regular-season action, which kicks off Thursday night when UMass (17-12-3, 8-9-3) hosts UMass Lowell (15-12-3, 8-10-2) for the opener of a home-and-home series that will conclude Saturday at Tsongas Center. Both teams are near the bubble, with UMass at 12th and Lowell 14th in the PairWise, giving a playoff feel to the matchup.

. 'We're in do-or-die time of the year. A win is going to take you to another level, and a loss is going to drop you down to another level, so there's a lot riding on every game.'
Sitting atop the PairWise, Boston College (24-6-1, 16-4-1) has no such concerns with regard to the NCAA Tournament, but the Eagles would like to move closer to clinching the regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament for the second year in a row with a pair of strong performances in a home-and-home series against UNH (11-14-5, 3-13-4) that begins Friday at Conte Forum.
Second-place Maine (19-6-5, 11-4-5) will look to keep the pressure on BC when it hosts Vermont (11-16-3, 6-12-2) for a pair. UConn has a quick turnaround after Tuesday's game against BU, beginning a home-and home series by hosting Northeastern (11-16-3, 6-11-3) Friday, while Providence (18-8-5, 8-7-5) hosts Merrimack (13-16-1, 9-10-1) on Friday before traveling to North Andover on Saturday.

In ECAC action, Harvard (10-15-2, 8-10-2) closes out the regular season with a pair of games at Yale (6-18-3, 5-12-3) and Brown (13-12-2, 9-10-1). The Crimson are seventh in the conference and have clinched home ice for the first round of the ECAC tournament.
Atlantic Hockey America begins its tournament this weekend. Holy Cross (20-12-2, 19-5-2) and Bentley (18-14-2, 16-9-1) are among the teams with first-round byes. The Crusaders defeated AIC, 3-1, on Monday to clinch their first regular-season title since 2006.

Michigan reportedly offered major money to lure former Wisconsin WR out of transfer portal
The Michigan Wolverines tried to lure former Wisconsin wide receiver Skyler Bell out of the transfer portal and away from UConn this offseason, offering almost $500,000, according to Huskies' head coach Jim Mora. Mora shared the information earlier this week during his Coach's Show on Fox Sports 97.9. Asked to describe Bell, who returns in 2025 to lead the Huskies' receiving corps, Mora used the Michigan note to highlight his commitment to the team and program. "He's committed," Mora began. "This is a guy who was offered almost half a million dollars by Michigan to transfer, and decided to come back to UConn for not that much. That says something about him as a person and his commitment to this team. You love those characteristics of a guy like that. He's a really good person and a really good player." Bell transferred to UConn before the 2024 campaign after three years with the Badgers. After redshirting in 2021, he was a consistent contributor on the 2022 and 2023 Wisconsin offenses, totaling a combined 68 receptions, 740 yards and six touchdowns. The Watertown, Connecticut, native then broke through in a major way with the Huskies in 2024, finishing the year with 50 receptions, 860 yards, a terrific 17.2 yards per reception and five touchdowns. That breakout clearly got the attention of major programs with roster needs at the position; no Michigan receiver eclipsed 250 receiving yards in 2024, with only one reaching the 200-yard mark. Bell reentered the transfer portal in mid-December after that breakthrough season. In line with Mora's message about his commitment, the star wideout still played in UConn's Fenway Bowl win over North Carolina, during which he led all receivers with 77 yards and a touchdown. Michigan's courting of the former Badger was no secret; he visited the program the weekend of Dec. 21-22. But despite the significant financial offer that Mora reports, Bell withdrew from the portal in early January and returned to UConn. Michigan ended up adding two transfer wide receivers this offseason: Anthony Simpson (UMass) and Donaven McCulley (Indiana). It will be worth watching how their performance compares to Bell's, especially in the weeks leading up to Wisconsin's Oct. 4 trip to Ann Arbor, Michigan. Tennessee soccer preview versus top-ranked North Carolina to kick off 2025 season
Tennessee will kick off its 2025 soccer season Thursday. The Lady Vols will host No. 1 North Carolina at Regal Soccer Stadium. Rankings reflect the preseason United Soccer Coaches Poll. Kickoff between the Lady Vols and Tar Heels is slated for 7 p.m. EDT and the season opener will be televised by SEC Network. North Carolina leads the soccer series versus Tennessee, 12-0-1, all time dating to Sept. 5, 1997. Tennessee tied the Tar Heels, 0-0 in double overtime, on Sept. 10, 2004. Joe Kirt enters his fourth season as Tennessee's head coach in 2025. He previewed facing the top-ranked Tar Heels. 'I think it's where we want to finish the season, right,' Kirt said. 'We want to play those games in December, so let's figure out where we are early on. It's going to be no different than playing Clemson over the weekend. It is going to help us prepare for not only what we're going to see in the league, but what we're going to see in the NCAA Tournament. 'I think it's right away we're going to know here's where we are, here's where we need to improve, here's what we need to keep doing. It's why we're here to compete for national championships, so let's see where we are straight away.' Stratford, No. 16 WVU men's soccer with high hopes for deep roster in 2025
MORGANTOWN — The competition in goal is just one of several key decisions awaiting West Virginia men's soccer coach Dan Stratford as the Mountaineers prepare to open the 2025 season. Veteran goalkeeper Mac Bonnaire returns after a 13-2-6 record in 21 starts in 2024, with a .635 save percentage, allowing 1.09 goals per game. Sophomore Lorenzo Nunez, who served as the backup last year, is also back, while freshmen Toby Mawer and Chase Collins join the program. 'We feel like we have three high-level goalkeepers,' Stratford said. 'It's another really healthy race and a ruthless decision we'll have to make. Seventeen days isn't a lot of time, and those three exhibition games go quickly.' Stratford knows managing a deep roster will be one of the biggest challenges in 2025. The Mountaineers must replace 10 seniors and multiple transfers from last year's roster that reached the NCAA Tournament's second round. Still, a strong core returns from the 13-win team, including three players named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Team. 'While there will be some new faces doing it, we have a lot of quality and depth this year,' said Stratford, who enters his sixth season as head coach. 'That'll be a management issue for us as a staff, but it's a good problem to have.' It'll soon be known who will start between the posts, as the No. 16 Mountaineers host Manhattan at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Jaspers, who went 5-8-3 last fall, are led by new head coach Tom Giovatto, hired July 10 after a successful run at St. Francis (Brooklyn). 'Often it's my most stressful scout because it's the most unknown,' Stratford said. 'With Manhattan, we don't have any game film from this year, and the difference between the two coaches can be vast. But Coach Giovatto has a proven track record with five NCAA Tournament appearances in eight years. We expect them to come in energized.' WVU was picked second behind Marshall in the Sun Belt preseason coaches' poll, and Stratford knows his team's home-field advantage is an important factor. The Mountaineers are unbeaten in their last 25 home matches, going 18-0-7 over the last two seasons. Under Stratford, WVU is 33-2-13 at home, including three undefeated seasons on home soil in years it qualified for the NCAA Tournament (2021, 2023, 2024). 'It doesn't matter what the context is — when we're here, we expect to win,' Stratford said. 'A fast start is critical. In our best seasons, we've gone double digits without a loss, which gives you a margin for error later on. There's little room for mistakes when you're aspiring to not just make the NCAA Tournament, but to earn a high seed as well.' Senior forward Marcus Caldeira, the conference's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, leads the line with Isaac Scheer and graduate defender Carlos Hernando joining him as all-conference selections in 2024. Caldeira has scored 23 goals over the last two seasons and 28 in his career, ranking ninth all-time at WVU. Stratford believes his senior striker is positioned for a historic final campaign. 'He's already one of the most decorated players in the program's history,' Stratford said. 'If we go on another formidable run, there may not be another Mountaineer with that level of output.' Caldeira, drafted 20th overall by Minnesota United after the 2023 season, opted to remain at WVU. The decision gives him the chance to climb into the program's top five career goal scorers. 'He knows his professional career is next,' Stratford said. 'He's pleased with what's happening here and is driven to have a fantastic senior campaign.' Scheer made an immediate impact as a freshman with three goals and five assists in 22 appearances (13 starts) in 2024. Hernando, a two-year starter after transferring from William Carey, was granted an extra season of eligibility through a recent NCAA ruling and will serve as captain in 2025. 'We feel terrific about the core group that's back, but inevitably, we had 10 graduating seniors. A lot of those were big hitters for us when it came to minutes, so some of those will have to be replenished elsewhere,' Stratford said. 'We're pleased with the quality of business that we did in last December's transfer portal. We knew there was going to be a lot of change, and we wanted to get ahead of it and see if we couldn't get as much of the squad together for this spring, and we did well with that. In essence, there are only eight new faces this August.'
