Mercedes upbeat after binning suspension upgrade

Reutersa day ago
LONDON, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Former champions Mercedes hope to be challenging for wins again when they return from Formula One's August break after binning a rear suspension upgrade that made the car slower.
The upgrade was introduced at Imola in May after George Russell had finished in the top three in four of the first six races.
The Briton finished only seventh in that Italian race and Mercedes dropped the upgrade for the next two rounds before bringing it back for Canada, a race Russell won.
That proved misleading, and Russell struggled in the following four races until Mercedes reverted to the old package for Hungary last weekend and he finished third.
Rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli was also back in the points at the Hungaroring, finishing 10th after three races without scoring.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said the upgrade would "be ending up in a bin somewhere.
"We were misled a bit by the Montreal win... we came to the conclusion it needed to come off, it went off and the car's back to solid form," said the Austrian.
Trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin said in a Hungarian GP debrief on Wednesday that the car was now easier to work with and the drivers more confident in attacking the corners.
"If we make a new suspension, we're doing it to make the car go quicker... and clearly there's something that wasn't right," he added.
"And it's not something that was dead obvious. Otherwise, we wouldn't have had the issue in the first place."
Shovlin said the learning would help Russell in his battle with Red Bull's Max Verstappen for third place overall behind the McLaren drivers, and Mercedes chasing second in the constructors'.
"Budapest showed that we've got a good car when we land it in the right place," said Shovlin. "And then hopefully there'll be an opportunity to build on our tally of race wins.
"We had a great time in Montreal. There's other circuits that are a bit more like that coming up over the remaining 10 races and hopefully we'll have a few more highlights."

Why not getting car finance compensation could be a blessing in disguise

Time has passed since the Supreme Court's ruling. The dust has settled, and I, for one, have abandoned my plans for a new games console and a weekend getaway, because my hopes for car finance compensation now lie mostly in tatters. In that time, however, I – as well as many other voices across the industry – have concluded that while not being in line for a payout in the ongoing car finance scandal saga might be disappointing, the reduction in scope has ultimately been a good thing for all of us, consumers and businesses alike. Now this might sound counterintuitive – why would consumers not getting the cash they feel they're owed be the preferred outcome? But the truth is that the long-term repercussions of mass payouts may greatly outweigh the benefit motorists would get from a bit of extra cash in the post. Advertisement - Article continues below One of the biggest concerns for the car finance industry prior to the Supreme Court's ruling was that redress on the scale that was expected – analysts warned of anything between £40-45 billion in payouts to almost anyone who has taken out motor finance in the two decades – could be nothing short of armageddon for the motor finance industry. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below 'Why's that a bad thing?' I hear you ask. 'Don't those greedy lenders deserve what's coming to them?' Maybe. Maybe not. But regardless, the general consensus was that such a sizeable financial hit to the industry would consequently push up the cost of lending, thus increasing the price of car finance in the future, and potentially make it harder to secure a loan altogether. Thinking of buying a car? Our Find a Car service has over 45,000 used cars in stock , with everything from superminis to supercars - all at a great price. Check it our now. Given that nine out of 10 cars in the UK are bought on finance, disaster for the finance sector would inevitably have a very substantial negative impact on the UK car market as a whole, if the cost of financing increased. Any drop in new-car registrations would in turn diminish manufacturer profits, potentially forcing them to raise prices – not ideal when we're already struggling to encourage buyers into more eco-friendly electric cars, which are only now beginning to get less expensive. Advertisement - Article continues below Financial ruin and the crippling of the automotive industry aside, there's also the moral issue of assuming all motorists were completely naive and oblivious to commission payments being made to dealers. We motorists are (generally) more intelligent than we give ourselves credit for and would be doing ourselves a misservice if we didn't at least secretly acknowledge that deep down we know that dealers do, of course, need to make a living and don't entirely exist in our servitude. Now, I must emphasise that we at Auto Express are very keen to see those who were wronged being appropriately redressed; excessive levels of commission, such as in one of the cases featured in the Supreme Court case, in which it accounted for 55 per cent of the cost of the consumer's finance deal, are frankly obscene and should be called out. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Discretionary Commission Arrangements are also unfair and we're glad the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has announced a consultation on a potential redress scheme. However, the Finance and Leasing Association has since argued that such a scheme goes too far, questioning whether something covering finance agreements going back as far as 2007 can be fair, given that firms weren't obliged to hold all of the appropriate data. This feels like nothing more than a blatant attempt to narrow the scope of payouts even further; DCAs only account for roughly 40 per cent of finance deals between 2007 and 2021 anyway, with the total industry bill having more than halved since the Court's ruling to a maximum of £18 billion. Thus, we feel the FCA should continue with its plans, ignoring interference from the industry and Government to ensure those affected get what they deserve. So, in short: the Supreme Court's ruling may well be a blessing in disguise, with consumers possibly missing out on compensation for something they never would have known to even feel aggrieved about, had it not come to light as part of the DCA fallout, at the same time as protecting the system most consumers rely on to fund their next car purchase. So while some will still be eligible for compensation, I for one will have no choice but to launch a GoFundMe campaign, ensuring that Nintendo Switch 2 will be mine in no time… Find a car with the experts BYD gives up on EV grant, and offers five years of maintenance instead BYD gives up on EV grant, and offers five years of maintenance instead With a Government grant looking unlikely, BYD has announced a new warranty and maintenance scheme to tempt buyers Car Deal of the Day: MGS5 EV for under £200 a month is a true bargain Car Deal of the Day: MGS5 EV for under £200 a month is a true bargain The ZS EV's replacement is an excellent small electric SUV, and our Deal of the Day for August 4 Fiat and Abarth electric cars plummet in price as brand reintroduces 'E-Grant' Fiat and Abarth electric cars plummet in price as brand reintroduces 'E-Grant' Fiat offers sizable discounts as it awaits confirmation that its EVs are eligible for the new Government grant

Friday racing tips: Best bets and odds for Newmarket, Musselburgh, Thirsk and Brighton

Friday's Racing Tips Jungle Monarch (Musselburgh, 14.20) – 1pt win @ 15/8 bet365 South Parade (Thirsk, 15.40) – 0.5pt each-way @ 7/1 bet365 Mumayaz (Brighton, 15.30) – 0.5pt each-way @ 9/1 bet365 Dashing Dick (Newmarket, 19.05) – 0.5pt each-way @ 7/1 bet365 Rogue Dynasty (Newmarket, 19.40) – 1pt win @ 3/1 bet365 Racing correspondent Jonathan Doidge enjoyed a profitable Glorious Goodwood, picking out no fewer than nine winners and finishing the week 9.82pts in profit. Now, he turns his attention to Friday's racing, using the best betting sites when selectng his latest racing tips. 14.20 Musselburgh Tips At Musselburgh there are some trappy handicaps where finding value on horse racing betting sites is not looking easy, but an interesting runner goes in the British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes (14.20) in the shape of Jungle Monarch. Karl Burke's string is in good shape and, after a disappointing debut effort at Wolverhampton, he ran much more like the market suggested at Redcar last time, despite being the beaten favourite. He travelled well that day and had excuses, as it was reported after the race that he'd lost his right fore shoe. This flat track suits speedier types and, now gelded, he might have more improvement in him this time than his opponents. 15.40 Thirsk Tips Over at Thirsk, there's an interesting contest for the JW 4x4 Northallerton Handicap (15.40). Several of these have C&D form, including South Parade, who represents Richard Fahey. The four-year-old filly wouldn't be in quite as good form as some recently but she's back on a handy mark as a result. She also has a good draw and she could be poised to strike again. Friday racing tip 2: South Parade – 0.5pt each-way @ 7/1 bet365 15.30 Brighton Tips The Harry Bloom Memorial 'Brighton Bullet' Handicap (15.30) looks the pick on the card at Brighton. An in-form Abate should prove popular with punters after success last time at Lingfield and can again go well. However, a better value bet could be Mumayaz for trainer Tony Carroll. He's already a C&D winner, his career best turf effort having come here earlier in the season. He also posted a career-best AW effort at Wolverhampton (5f) last time out, so he's still in good nick. He's 2lb higher than that C&D win from April, but conditions will suit and cheekpieces now go on to accompany the tongue-tie he usually sports, which could help lift him to greater heights. He looks a decent each-way play. Friday racing tip 3: Mumayaz – 0.5pt each-way @ 9/1 Newmarket Tips Newmarket stages one of its Friday summer evening cards and there's an open contest on paper for the Maritime Cargo Services Outperforming The Opposition Handicap (19.05). Dashing Dick already has a course and distance success to his name last season and arrives in good form, having gone close at York and then run another cracker back here when a close third last time. Admittedly, he is exposed but so are most of his opponents and he should be capable of being heavily involved again. A mention, at this point, for the unexposed Deadly Kiss, who improved here on slower ground last time but with a dry forecast before the race, she will have a bit to prove on the forecast ground, whereas the selection does not. Friday racing tip 4: Dashing Dick – 0.5pt each-way @ 7/1 bet365 Staying at 'HQ' and the Maritime Cargo Services Smart Customs Clearance Fillies' Handicap (19.40) looks to present a good opportunity for Rogue Dynasty to win again. James Owen's filly broke her duck on her first start for the trainer, at Chester last month. She bettered that effort, despite defeat, at Yarmouth last time. She will probably appreciate the drying ground and can continue her recent progress with another win. Responsible Gambling Bettors should always practice responsible gambling. Jude Bellingham shows new skinny figure as he begins rehab after revealing nasty scar from shoulder operation

SKINNY Jude Bellingham showed off his new trim figure as he began rehab after shoulder surgery. And he is sporting a new nasty scar after the operation. 5 5 5 Bellingham, 22, went under the knife in London three weeks ago. He had been struggling with the problem for more than 18 months after dislocating his left shoulder following an awkward fall against Rayo Vallecano in November 2023. But after being fed up of playing with a sling and needing strapping to prevent further damage, the Real Madrid and England star opted to get the procedure done. Lean Bellingham took to social media to update fans on his progress, posting a video of him doing some mobility exercises with a band while topless in white adidas shorts. Another clip saw him working with a physio to test out the recovering shoulder. And a large scar running from his armpit up and over the joint was clearly visible. Bellingham uploaded the videos as part of a series from his holiday to Jamaica. The Instagram post - captioned "one love" - has racked up more than 2million likes in less than 24 hours. He also shared it on his story, with the caption: "3 weeks post op", with a praising hands emoji. Immediately after the surgery, Bellingham wrote on Instagram: "Thank you to Andrew Wallace and Susan Alexander, their team and everyone at Fortius Clinic for the surgery and hospitality. "To Ivan Ortega and Dr Leyes for travelling to support. "And finally, to everyone else for all the well wishes and messages of love. "The process to come back has already started, see you soon." Bellingham will miss the early part of the 2025-26 season as he continues his rehab. The midfielder could be out until as late as November - but will be keen to hit the ground running as he looks to add to his LaLiga and Champions League winners' medals from his debut season at the Bernabeu. But he may be targeting Real's league clash with Getafe on October 19 which comes after the second international break. 5
