Dow Constantine named Sound Transit CEO with $450K salary
King County Executive Dow Constantine has been selected as the new CEO of Sound Transit.
Constantine was chosen from a pool of 60 applicants after a comprehensive selection process.
His contract runs through Dec. 2026, with an annual base salary of $450,000 per year.
SEATTLE - The Sound Transit Board of Directors has selected King County Executive Dow Constantine to serve as the agency's next CEO, effective April 1.
According to a Thursday press release, Constantine, who has led King County since 2009, was chosen after a comprehensive selection process that reviewed 60 applicants from around the world.
Dave Somers, Chair of the Sound Transit Board and Snohomish County Executive, emphasized that Constantine's experience would allow him to "hit the ground running" and guide the transit agency toward its regional goals.

Before becoming King County Executive, Constantine served on the King County Council and in the Washington State Legislature. He is a three-time University of Washington alumnus, holding postgraduate degrees in law and urban planning.
What's next
Constantine's contract runs through December 31, 2026, with the possibility of two one-year renewals. His base salary will be $450,000 annually. Interim CEO Goran Sparrman will continue his role as an advisor to Constantine until May 2, 2025.

Jacobs to design $7B Seattle light rail extension

The extension will add 4.1 miles of light rail, a new bridge, tunnel and four new stations, linking Seattle's SODO neighborhood with West Seattle's Alaska Junction neighborhood, according to the project website. The project will also be the catalyst for new development near stations, including retail and affordable housing. Jacobs will lead Phase 1 design and design validation for the project, per the release. The cost of the contract was not disclosed. "Jacobs has delivered some of Puget Sound's most critical transportation solutions for 70 years, including approximately 30 miles of light rail system expansions for Sound Transit," said Jacobs Executive Vice President Ron Williams in the release. Those include the Northgate Link Extension Project and the I-90 portion of the Eastlink project, according to Jacobs. Planning began in 2017, per the project website. The Sound Transit Board selected route and station locations for the West Seattle Link Extension Project in October 2024, and the Federal Transit Agency approved the extension in April, allowing it to move to the final design phase. Light rail extension between Seattle and Eastside delayed
We'll have to wait a little longer for a light rail extension between Seattle and the Eastside. The project was supposed to be finished by the end of 2025, but it's now being pushed back to 2026. An exact time frame hasn't yet been announced. Last week, crews successfully pulled a light rail car across the new tracks along the I-90 floating bridge over Lake Washington. It will be the first light rail to run across a floating bridge. Crews have been working to finish rail installation and testing the electrical systems along the track. During final rail installation, where the tracks are anchored to the concrete support blocks below them, crews found that a small number of the bolt inserts within the blocks need replacement. 'While not concerning based on what we know today, we want to get those connectors replaced now,' a news release from Sound Transit says. Crews also want to make sure that bringing the electrified light rail across the bridge won't damage its existing structure. Testing is expected to last through the summer. The Downtown Redmond Link Extension opened May 10. Ten of the 12 stations on the 2-Line are now open.
