Thousands of workers protest, production in industries affected in Bengaluru
According to the Joint Committee of Trade Unions (JCTU), about 8,000 workers arrived at Freedom Park, where a protest meeting was organised. The workers from engineering, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, electronics, and aerospace industries, among others, participated.
'Production came to a complete halt in several industries in the city as workers held a gate meeting before leaving to the protest site,' a source in JCTU said.
A memorandum detailing the workers' demand was also submitted to the government.
The JCTU urged immediate implementation of the draft minimum wages already notified by vacating the stay ordered by the court. Urging scrapping of the four industrial codes, the JCTU said that maximum working hours daily should be capped at eight hours and proposed an amendment to Section 24 of the Factories Act and Shops and Establishment Act that involves safety measures for working class, should be withdrawn.

DefMin signs Rs 2K-cr deal with BEL
New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence on Friday signed a contract with public-sector defence company Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) for the procurement of Air Defence Fire Control Radars for the Indian Army, worth approximately Rs2,000 crore, under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured) category. With a minimum 70 per cent indigenous content, these Fire Control Radars will be able to detect all forms of airborne threats, including fighter aircraft, attack helicopters and enemy drones. This would mark a significant milestone in the modernisation of the Air Defence Regiments and enhance the Indian Army's operational readiness, while contributing to the economic growth of the nation, according to a Defence Ministry statement. The contract was signed and exchanged by senior officials of the Ministry of Defence and BEL in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. The procurement marks a pivotal step towards empowering indigenous defence industries by encouraging Indian MSMEs through components manufacturing and raw material supply, the statement said. The government is keen to promote the country's defence industry, and earlier this month Defence Acquisition Council, under the chairmanship of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, gave the go-ahead for 10 proposals to purchase military hardware, including missiles and electronic warfare systems, worth approximately Rs 1.05 lakh crore through indigenous sourcing. India's indigenous defence production has surged to an all-time high of Rs1.46 lakh crore, with exports increasing to a record Rs24,000 crore in 2024-25, according to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.'Our defence production, which was only Rs43,000 crore 10 to 11 years ago, has now crossed a record figure of Rs1,46,000 crore, with the private sector's contribution of over Rs32,000 crore. Our defence exports, which were around Rs600-700 crore 10 years ago, have surpassed a record figure of Rs24,000 crore today,' the minister stated in his address at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) annual summit recently. He described Make-in-India as crucial for security and prosperity, stating that the use of indigenous systems during Operation Sindoor has proved that India has the power to penetrate any armour of the enemy.

ITC lines up Rs 20K-cr investments
Kolkata: Diversified conglomerate ITC Ltd will invest Rs20,000 crore in the medium term to expand its manufacturing footprint across sectors, Chairman SanjivPuri said on at the AGM, he said the company has already set up eight new manufacturing facilities in recent years as part of its growth strategy. Puri said the company will prioritise its 'Bharat First' strategy—focusing on deepening its domestic presence—before making a significant overseas impact. He added that new brand launches are aimed at driving value per cent of the company's revenue is from non-cigarette business, Puri said. Purifurther said the company will continue to evaluate strategic options for its businesses, including ITC Infotech, based on competitive context, business maturity, opportunities and overall value creation, without specifying any immediate plans for a demerger similar to the hotels vertical. Referring to studies by leading consulting firms in 2002, 2006, and 2017, Puri said these reports observed that conglomerates delivered superior shareholder returns in about 50 per cent of cases. 'Value creation is not a function of diversification, but of how that diversity is managed. With distributed leadership, strong governance and institutional synergies, ITC has turned this into a strength,' he said. Responding to a query on the possibility of spinning off ITC Infotech as a separate listed entity at the AGM, Puri said: 'We look at the business strategy, the competitive context, maturity of the business, and weigh the pros and cons of the current structure. Whatever is best, we recommend for shareholders' approval.' He stressed that ITC's structure is aligned with its strategic objectives, and decisions such as the demerger of ITC Hotels follow extensive reviews. 'Just like we did for hotels, whatever is right will be done at the right time. Nothing is cast in stone,'Puri asserted.
