Surprise as 100 Spaniards turn up at non-league football match

BBC News18-04-2025

Wembley, Old Trafford and Anfield regularly football tourists from foreign shores - but they are a far less common site at Harborough Town's home ground in Leicestershire. So imagine the surprise when more than 100 Spanish sports fans turned up to enjoy the non-league club's match against St Ives Town on Saturday. The Spaniards were subscribers to a Spanish YouTube channel devoted to English football which has now started arranging trips."Some of the local fans were quite surprised, probably wondering what 100 Spaniards were doing there," said Madrid-born and new Harborough Town fan, Alvaro Sanz.
The channel La Media Inglesa (LMI) was founded by Barcelona-born Ilie Oleart and covers English football matches for Spanish speaking fans across the world.Since launching in 2011, the channel has gained more than 440,000 subscribers and began offering trips to the UK in 2018 so the fans could watch games in person.
Oleart, who supports La Liga side Espanyol, said the next step for LMI was to not only show English football but also try to be involved with an English football club in some way. "Our aim was to transform a small local English club into a small local club with a global fanbase," he said. After speaking to different lower league clubs, Mr Oleart asked his subscribers which club they should link up with - and Harborough Town FC emerged as the fans' choice.
"I met people at the club in September to get to know their history, the town and the facilities," said Mr Oleart."We thought they were the perfect club with the right values to share with our audience."Harborough Town games in the seventh tier of English football will now be live-streamed on the LMI Youtube channel, giving Spanish-speaking fans a chance to become "virtual supporters" of the club.
The club - nicknamed the Bees - have already captured the imagination this season by reaching the FA Cup second round for the first time and having former Brazilian international Sandro play for them.Club chairman Peter Dougan said the partnership with LMI was an "opportunity to grow our fanbase and our income" through a global audience and could open the door to sponsorship deals."It was being in the right place at the right time," he said."LMI liked what they saw and we decided they were right for our club too."
Despite Harborough losing 2-1 to St Ives Town in their Southern League Premier Division Central encounter, Mr Oleart said his group "very happy" with their experience."It was certainly the best trip we have had so far," he said."We occupied a full stand and started cheering from the first second of the game", added fan Alvaro Sanz."Quite a few local fans joined us, and we even taught them some chants in Spanish."We didn't stop supporting the team for the entire match."
Before the game, residents watched in amusement as two coachloads of Spanish supporters arrived in the town centre before marching around singing Spanish songs before kick-off."It wasn't just any club anymore, it felt like our club" said Mr Oleart. "We were able to meet the players after the match and even have a drink with them in the pub, which is something that is impossible to imagine at a Premier League club."We wanted to ensure the trip was a chance for us to create a relationship with their fans too."There are many things to do to work on the alliance and to make it stronger, but I am sure there are many great memories to create in the future and I am hoping to bring 200-300 fans with me next time."Many football fans are looking for this experience and we are glad to do it with Harborough Town FC."
Bees chairman Pete Dougan said: "It was a great day and the atmosphere they generated was superb."It was like song tennis in the stadium, our fans were singing songs in English and then they sang songs back in Spanish. It was good fun."Dougan said he was looking forward to welcoming his new fans back next season and revealed the club are heading to Barcelona and Madrid for a pre-season tour in July.

Nick Morgan living the dream with Stern John in St Lucia

The 44-year-old from St Julians has a management CV that features a raft of Gwent clubs but now he is part of St Lucia's set-up, working as an assistant for former Premier League striker Stern John. The 'Piton Boyz' will go up against Advocaat's Curacao, who boast players from the Netherlands' Eredivisie, in the early hours of Saturday UK time and then face Barbados on Tuesday night. Morgan has had the job since the autumn of 2024 after accepting an invite from John, who played in England for Nottingham Forest, Birmingham, Coventry, Derby, Sunderland, Southampton, Bristol City and Crystal Palace. The pair met on a Football Association of Wales A licence course and that led to the Welshman jumping at a chance to experience international football. Morgan initially did that while managing Westfields in Hellenic League Premier Division but he has now left the Hereford club and will devote more of his time to St Lucia, alongside his full-time job as a project manager with energy company SSE. COACH: Nick Morgan in St Lucia (Image: Nick Morgan) 'I'm senior team coach but now I will also be a liaison for the players in the UK, which I couldn't do when I had games on Saturdays,' he said. 'I'll go and watch those who have already committed to us but also work on a big list of those who maybe could in the future. 'Stern came over in May and we went to watch some players because we have seven professionals in the English leagues – the likes of Terell Thomas at Carlisle, Arkell Jude-Boyd at Cheltenham, Chris Forino-Joseph at Bolton.' St Lucia are 165 in FIFA's rankings and the World Cup is not a realistic aim but they did have a good crack at qualification for this summer's Concacaf Gold Cup. They finished second to Curacao in the group stages, that after stunning Advocaat's side 2-1 in their opener. The big aim is to make progress as a nation with Morgan relishing the chance to be part of a professional football environment again. He did that with Newport County AFC under good friend Michael Flynn in 2017/18 – a season that featured the FA Cup games against Tottenham at Rodney Parade and Wembley – but it was a stretch. 'I remember that we had Lincoln away on a Tuesday night and I had to be in Exeter for work at 8am. We got back to the training ground at 3am,' said Morgan, who has a wife Lucy and children Cian and Kayleigh. 'I was committed to that season but it was tough, I've been offered opportunities in full-time football but, with the level that I would have to go in at, I couldn't risk my job in the outside.' Morgan has been part of the set-ups at Newport Corinthians, Newport YMCA, Chepstow, Monmouth, Cwmbran Celtic and Abergavenny, plus he also worked with the Exiles' academy before stepping up to help with the first team. 'I've been in semi-professional football for the last 15 years since I stopped playing and it's always been something running alongside my job, working with some very good Welsh teams before going over to England,' he said. 'Now I've got this opportunity to go over to the Caribbean and represent a country, and I love the togetherness that we have as a squad and staff. 'This gives me the chance to get that experience of a professional football environment with the camps three or four times a year. I love it.'

The two-time Wimbledon champion returned to the court for the first time in a year to commemorate the special occasion. It's a venue which holds many memories for the Dunblane star, who said when addressing the crowd: "I've obviously missed being out here. First time not being involved in a grass court season in a while, but I've got a new life now and enjoying being away from the sport. 'It's cool, this tournament and this court has had many special moments for me. It's the place, the tournament not the court, where I won my first match on the ATP Tour, 'It was my most successful event; I always love coming back here at the start of the British summer. "I'm very proud of the results I had here. I'm very grateful and thankful for whoever it was who decided to name the stadium this was.' He was given a guard of honour by the ball kids as he made his way out onto the court. Murray was then joined by former British tennis player and tournament director of the HSBC Championships WTA event, Laura Robson, 10-year-old Gloria Pearce from the Queen's Club Foundation and seven-year-old Jay Ikanone from Greenhouse Sport for a quick doubles match. But before he even picked up his racket, Murray, 38, admitted he was feeling rusty after a year out. He joked: 'My tennis is diabolical nowadays so apologies for what you're about to witness but I'll give it a go'. Moment Andy Murray holes stunning putt from off the green in challenge match with brother Jamie - but rivals have last laugh Murray ended up winning both points with his partner Gloria. He was then given the honour of doing the coin toss for the first match of the WTA 500 event between Petra Kvitova and Beatriz Haddad Maia. It was a highly-anticipated match as it's first time in 52 years that a women's event has been held in London. Haddad Maia came out on top over three sets, winning the second and third set 6-4 after losing the opener 6-2. Spurs close in on Thomas Frank after making official approach to Brentford

Spurs sacked Ange Postecoglou on Friday, despite Europa League success, and quickly set their sights on Frank – who has gained admirers for his work over an impressive seven-year period at the west London club. After positive initial talks over the weekend, confidence started to grow on Monday morning that Frank would be the man to replace Postecoglou and Tottenham have now entered discussions with Brentford, PA understands. Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties. — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) June 6, 2025 Frank's current deal with the Bees runs until the summer of 2027 and contains a release clause reported to be in the region of £10million. Brentford are eager to hold out for Frank's release clause, but they have started talks with Spurs over a compensation package which would soften the blow of losing the highly-rated Dane. The 51-year-old would take over a Spurs side which won the Europa League last month but finished 17th in the Premier League. Poor domestic form during the 2024-25 season cost Postecoglou his job as the Spurs board was forced to make 'one of the toughest decisions' it has had to make in dismissing the head coach who ended a 17-year trophy drought. 'It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond,' a club statement on Friday read. PA understands Tottenham have also relieved coaches Mile Jedinak, Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo of their duties. Ryan Mason left his role as Spurs first-team coach last week to take over as West Brom boss, which opens the door for Frank to bring in some of his own staff – with current Brentford assistant Claus Norgaard a long-term ally. PA understands another departure from Spurs this summer will be Scott Munn, who was made chief football officer at the club in 2023. Tottenham technical director Johan Lange has remained in post and is set to renew allegiances with compatriot Frank. Frank and Lange worked together at Danish club Lyngby before they both made their marks in the Premier League. Lange attempted to bring Frank to Aston Villa in 2022 when he worked at the midlands outfit. Former Brondby boss Frank has developed a strong reputation in English football since he took over Brentford, with his tactical nous and man-management skills often lauded by rival managers and pundits. After Frank guided Brentford to promotion in 2021, he quickly enabled them to compete strongly in the Premier League despite a modest budget and has been linked to a number of high-profile vacancies in recent years.
