Best river cruises this summer from bargain luxury to women's only sailings
Laced with scenic waterways, Europe is a joy to discover by water, especially during the summer months when the banks are lined with outdoor attractions and festivals.
Calmer than a traditional ocean cruise, navigating rivers is ideal for anyone wanting to travel at a slower pace with multiple opportunities to jump off and explore with the convenience of usually mooring close to the town or city centre.
Across the continent, events are taking place to commemorate iconic figures and celebrate the birth of major cities. These are some of the highlights to try as the weather warms up on the sun deck...

Along with its connections to one of Europe's most beautiful waterways, Vienna has links to many of the world's greatest classical composers.
This year, Austria's capital celebrates the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss II, known as the waltz king. To tie in with celebrations, Viking is offering a special itinerary along the Danube, including an evening performance of the Strauss Capelle at the Wiener Konzerthaus in Vienna with conductor and violinist Alma Deutscher – once hailed as a 'new Mozart'.
Sail onward and relax at a Budapestthermal bath and explore lesser-known Central European cities such as Bratislava and Passau. Book it: A seven-night Danube Waltz cruise on a Viking Longship costs from £2,795pp, including UK flights and some activities. Various departure dates. viking.com
Northern Europe
Promising to go where others don't, CroisiEurope's MS R.E. Waydelich L.J. paddlewheel ship will operate a new itinerary this summer. Along with being more environmentally friendly than other vessels, the ship has a shallower draft, enabling river navigations, even when water levels are low.
Jump on board for a voyage along four of Europe's most popular rivers – the Rhine, Neckar, Moselle and Saar – which flow primarily through Germany. Spend an evening wandering around the medieval heart of French city Strasbourg, sample fine wines at prime vineyards and gaze at views along the scenic Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO world heritage site.

Venice, Italy
At the height of summer, a top-end hotel in Venice can cost around £500 per guest a night just for a room. A cheaper way to see La Serenissima in style is to sail through on a small ship cruise.
While bigger ships have been banned, Uniworld's 126-passenger La Venezia can navigate the Grand Canal in a vessel elegantly designed to match the destination, for less than £300 per night full-board. Beat the peak season crowds with a private VIP visit to St Mark's Basilica after-dark and join a tour of the Doge's Palace first thing in the morning before it opens to the public.

Strauss' 'Blue Danube' is beamed into space as Vienna celebrates with a concert
Strauss' 'Blue Danube' waltz has finally made it into space, nearly a half-century after missing a ride on NASA's twin Voyager spacecraft. The European Space Agency's big radio antenna in Spain beamed the waltz into the cosmos Saturday. Operators aimed the dish at Voyager 1, the world's most distant spacecraft more than 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) away. Traveling at the speed of light, the music was expected to overtake Voyager 1 within 23 hours. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra performed the 'Blue Danube' during the space transmission, which actually sent up a version from rehearsal. It's part of the yearlong celebration marking the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss II, who was born in Vienna in 1825. The Strauss space send-off also honors the 50th anniversary of ESA's founding. Launched in 1977 and now in interstellar space, each of the two Voyagers carries a Golden Record full of music but nothing from the waltz king. His 'Blue Danube' holds special meaning for space fans: It's featured in Stanley Kubrick 's 1968 sci-fi film '2001: A Space Odyssey.'

It's the 20th anniversary of Tom Cruise jumping on Oprah Winfrey's sofa
It's been two decades since one of the most iconic (or perhaps notorious) moments in pop culture history: Tom Cruise jumping on Oprah Winfrey's sofa. The interview has become a shorthand for celebrity eccentricity for good reason. For those who don't remember, the interview aired on May 23, 2005, around the same time Cruise was first making negative headlines for his association with Scientology. He went on The Oprah Winfrey Show – then one of the biggest talk shows in the world – and discussed his new romance with Katie Holmes, whom he wed in 2006 and split from in 2012. Cruise entered the studio to thunderous applause and was visibly ecstatic as he made his way towards Oprah. He was unusually animated, full of energy, and smiling broadly – something that was very unlikely for the actor. As Oprah asked about his relationship with actress Holmes, Cruise responded with uncontained enthusiasm. At one point, he stood on the couch, knelt on it, punched the air, and later jumped up and down. Oprah laughed and said, 'You're gone!' obviously concerned but trying to play along with whatever was happening. Cruise then repeatedly professed his love for Holmes, calling her 'extraordinary' and saying he had never felt this way before. He grabbed Oprah's hands and pulled her from her chair, continuing his excited display. The audience responded with laughter, applause, and some visible confusion, but it was the virality of the clip afterwards that truly stoked fan reaction. YouTube had only recently come to exist in 2005, and the clip of Cruise was one of the platform's first-ever viral videos, a stark contrast to the likes of TikTok in 2025, where there's a new viral trend every other day. At the time, with so much less content on the web, viral moments lasted a lot longer (see: 2007's Charlie Bit My Finger), and Cruise's strange interview became the definitive celebrity moment of the year. News broadcasts, entertainment shows, and late-night comedians latched onto Cruise's bizarre, uncharacteristic energy levels, with the couch-jumping mocked on Saturday Night Live, South Park, and talk shows for weeks. His exaggerated declaration of love for his new girlfriend felt unrelatable or even suspicious to some viewers, sparking speculation about Cruise's authenticity, mental state, and ties to Scientology. Some even wondered if the Church of Scientology had arranged his match with Holmes. A recent Reddit thread unpacks the cultural impact of the interview, with one user asking on r/popculturechat: 'How big of a deal was the Tom Cruise incident on The Oprah Winfrey show at the time?' Other users quickly responded to assure the original poster that it was seemingly all anyone could talk about that year. YugisMillenniumBSBcd wrote: 'It was massive! It was one of the last big pop culture things before youtube really took off. Everyone was talking about it without having actually seen it, so people thought it was more shocking than it really was. It didn't help we all knew he's got several screws loose with his Xenu worshipping BS, so the idea of him jumping around the Oprah set like Top Gun: Kangaroo was 10000% believable.' amomentintimebro agreed: 'Oh HUGE. I remember watching it and the media storm after. He came off as a total crazy person and everyone was super weirded out.' Aware-Impression8527 chimed in: 'HUGE. There was no social media so celebrities were still kind of remote and moments held more weight (and didn't happen every minute of the day). He had this reputation for being so straight and restrained so to see him jump up and down on a couch was wild.' In the years since the couch jump was seen around the world, Cruise and Holmes have divorced, and it's believed he's estranged from their shared teenage daughter, Suri, who recently graduated in New York. She remains close with her mother, though, having dropped the 'Cruise' surname, as she now goes by Suri Noelle. It was previously claimed that the 46-year-old Dawson's Creek star filed for divorce from Cruise to protect Suri from Scientology, with Suri no longer a practising member of the organisation. According to The Sun, visits between Cruise and his daughter ceased around 2013, although he previously claimed he 'never cut [her] out' of his life. More Trending Cruise, currently rumoured to be dating Ana de Armas, also shares adopted children Bella and Connor with ex-wife Nicole Kidman, to whom he was married from 1990 to 2001. Away from the dramatics of fatherhood, Cruise has managed to rehabilitate his public image. The Mission: Impossible actor, who recently reprised his role of Ethan Hunt for The Final Reckoning, has even been called 'the last movie star' by those who will forgive just about anything from a man who does his own stunts, whether it be hanging from a plane or plunging to the depths of the ocean (or whatever else he does). Fans shocked by Colin Jost's reaction to wife Scarlett Johansson's standing ovation at Cannes
Colin Jost and Scarlett Johansson 's sweet interaction during her standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival has left fans swooning. Black Widow actress Scarlett, 40, received a five-minute standing ovation and prompted 'tears and cheers' from the crowds after her film, Eleanor the Great, premiered at the festival on Tuesday night. Before she took to the stage to address the audience though, she shared a tender moment with her other half, Colin, 42. In scenes shared on social media, an elated Scarlett looked happily into the eyes of her husband. Seconds later, Colin - who was beaming with pride - leaned into his wife and gave her a loving kiss. Their sweet interaction came just days after the couple shared an onscreen smooch as they closed out Saturday Night Live 's 50th season finale last Saturday. Gushing over their interaction on social media, one observed that the pair have 'genuine happiness and laughter.' 'Love them,' they added. The Saturday Night Live comedian looked lovingly into his wife's eyes during a tender moment Another said: 'They are so good for each other. I love to see couples who support each other like these two. It's awesome!' 'I love them,' a third added.' I hope they stay married.' 'Such a lovely couple!' wrote a fourth. Colin and Scarlett married in 2020, having got engaged two years into their relationship. Scarlett shares her little girl with ex-husband Romain Dauriac, to whom she was married from 2014 to 2017. Hollywood star Scarlett made her directorial debut with her film Eleanor the Great, which stars June Squibb. The movie follows June's character, who converted to Judaism upon marriage, join a Jewish seniors' social group, before discovering it is specifically for Holocaust survivors. Hoping to find companionship, Eleanor tells her friend Bessie's (Rita Zohar) devastating story about her family's time in Auschwitz as if it is her own, before her lie spirals away from her in a very public way. Scarlett described her directorial debut premiering at the film festival as a 'dream come true' and 'surreal' as she emotionally soaked up the positive reaction. However, critics were less convinced as it received very mixed reviews, with some branding it 'wobbly' and 'unconvincing' while others were more impressed by the 'powerful' and 'touching' release. The Hollywood Reporter concluded that the film 'struggled to find its groove' despite a hopeful character-driven plot. 'The film lurches between comic set pieces and more dramatic beats, and while Johansson proves a competent helmer, it's not enough to overcome some dizzying tonal imbalances,' they wrote.
