Liverpool's Portuguese forward Diogo Jota died in a car crash near Zamora in northwestern Spain with his brother, the Portuguese Football Federation said on Thursday.
The regional fire department of Castile and Leon, where Zamora is located, said on its website a car crashed early on Thursday, shortly after midnight, and burst into flames, with two men, aged 28 and 26, found dead.
"We have lost two champions. Their deaths represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day," the Portuguese Football Federation said in a statement.
Spanish police said they could not yet officially confirm the names of the deceased, but everything pointed to it being Jota and his brother, Andre Silva.
The Lamborghini they were travelling veered off the road, a spokesperson said.
The bodies have been taken to a forensics unit in nearby Zamora where autopsies will be performed, police said.

Dozens hurt in petrol station blast in Rome

Dozens hurt in petrol station blast in Rome The explosion sends thick black smoke into the air and can be heard on the other side of Rome. Photo: Reuters A huge explosion at a petrol station in a Rome suburb on Friday left 45 people hurt, two of them seriously, and rattled windows across the Italian capital. The blast around 8.20am was preceded by a fire caused by a gas leak during refuelling, according to Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri. Gualtieri visited the charred and smoking remains of the petrol and liquified natural gas (LNG) station and an adjacent sports centre in the Prenestino neighbourhood of eastern Rome. The explosion sent a fireball and thick black smoke into the air, and was heard on the other side of Rome, shaking windows and causing some residents to worry that a bomb had gone off. "The explosion was really powerful. I felt my skin burning," Michele Secu, a 23-year-old who worked at the now-destroyed sports centre, told AFP. Before the explosion, emergency services were called to investigate the gas leak and had evacuated the immediate area, including a children's summer camp. Twenty-one of the 45 injured were from the emergency services, including 12 police officers, Rome police told AFP. Two men were hospitalised and life-threatening condition, one with burns on 55 percent of his body, local health authorities told the AGI news agency. Fabio Balzani, head of the sports centre, said if the fire had occurred just a bit later it could have been disastrous. Some 60 children had been expected at the summer camp and around 120 people booked to use the swimming pool, as relief from a heatwave that has baked the city for the past week. "It would have been a massacre, a catastrophe," Balzani told AFP. Andrea Quattrocchi, the local chief of the Carabinieri police force, also said the timely intervention of his team was crucial. "They extracted a person alive from a burning car," who was taken to hospital, he told reporters. Witnesses said an ambulance exploded in the fire. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she was following the situation, and offered her support for all those injured. (AFP)

Portugal's Prime Minister Luis Montenegro joined members of Diogo Jota's family for a private wake on Friday in the Liverpool footballer's hometown in northern Portugal following his death alongside his brother Andre Silva in a car crash in Spain. Jota's long-time agent, Jorge Mendes, was also seen joining the family, including wife Rute Cardoso, who had married the footballer just weeks earlier. Montenegro spent almost half an hour with the family before leaving without making a statement. Jota's club remain focused on responding to the tragedy and said the forward would be 'honoured with the respect and affection he so richly deserves'. Liverpool's past and present sporting directors, Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes, said in a joint statement that tributes would be 'meaningful and inclusive of supporters'. A convoy of hearses carrying the bodies left for Gondomar near Porto on Thursday evening from the morgue of Puebla de Sanabria, near where the Lamborghini in which the brothers were travelling had veered off the road and burst into flames after midnight on Thursday. Police said they suspected a tyre had burst. PM Luis Montenegro arrives near the Chapel of the Resurrection, the location of the wake.
