Sony isn't worried about the Switch 2 being the fastest-selling piece of Nintendo hardware ever, because you need the PS5 for "a great experience on big screens"

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. As you've no doubt noticed, the Nintendo Switch 2 is now available worldwide. The new console's arrival is sending ripples through the industry, but Sony isn't concerned, because the PlayStation 5 hardware is simply on another level. Hideaki Nishino, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, was asked about Nintendo's latest system and whether there were any concerns about what it offers during a recent business segment meeting. He starts by mentioning that competition is good, and companies successfully launching products is good for everyone, before taking a more pointed stance. "We have a differentiated strategy. PS5 is designed for an immersive gaming experience, and this includes the innovative DualSense controller features as well," he says. "We believe PS5-level performance is required to achieve a great experience on big screens. And in this way, we have provided a unique offering for players and creators in this current console generation." In the face of increasing multi-platform releases, Nishino reiterates the goal of making the PS5 the finest option for creative teams looking to reach a wide audience. "We have empowered our creators to leverage our offering and services to create amazing, unique experiences for players with high engagement and great monetization opportunities," he explains. "We have done this consistently as the industry and competitive dynamics have evolved. And of course, PlayStation Studios, our franchises, have a special role in showcasing the PlayStation experience and then strengthening the player's vision with us." With the likes of God of War and The Last of Us, Sony has managed to maintain its exclusives remarkably well, breeding a particular kind of loyalty in the process. These games do court an older fanbase than the home of Super Mario and Zelda aims for, but Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, believes they have something for everyone. "In addition to our franchises with more, I would call it 'multi-generational' fanbases, such as Marvel's Spider-Man, we also have franchises that appeal to a range of different player segments. Horizon is a good example, it's been very popular with female players, Astro Bot from our lovely Team Asobi in Tokyo, it's been a hit with children and adults alike," he explained. There are pros and cons to every machine and platform. There's still only one place you can play Mario Kart, and it's not where Kratos lives, but you're unlikely to see The Last of Us 3 anywhere near the Switch 2 either. Meanwhile, the Switch 2 is built with portability in mind, whereas the PS5 favors cinematic, at-home playing. It's all about finding what suits you. PS5 Finally Has More Players Than PS4, Almost Five Years After Launch

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors The current console generation has been a bit different than those that came before. While previous generations have seen releases for older consoles gradually discontinued, the current generation still sees a lot of high-profile games get PS4 versions, despite PS5 being far more powerful. A PS5 on display A PS5 on display Photo byWe finally have a sense of why that is, as in a new business report from Sony, it has been revealed that the PS5 has more monthly players for the first time since the console's launch in November 2020, as reported by VGC. This is a step up from last year, where a similar report showed that the PS5 to PS4 monthly player ratio was an almost perfect 50/50 split at 49 million players each. A slide from Sony showing a graph of PS5 vs PS4 monthly players and their spend per console. A slide from Sony showing a graph of PS5 vs PS4 monthly players and their spend per console. Sony There are a lot of possible reasons behind this. Some critics say that Sony's lineup of PS5 exclusive titles has been weaker than previous generations, with plenty of PS4 versions of games, meaning older players don't feel the need to make the upgrade. Price is also a potential issue, as both games and consoles are getting more expensive as time goes on, with Sony most recently releasing the PS5 Pro at an eye-watering price point of $699.99, and prices are only expected to go up as we approach the PS6 in the next few years. Either way, Sony is viewing a multi-generational player base as a positive, as CEO and SIE president Hideaki Nishino explained during the presentation, "We now have a large ecosystem of highly engaged players across both the PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation 4 generations, so naturally, therfore, there's a huge interest in our next generation console strategy." This gives the impression that even when the PS6 does get revealed, Sony still has every intention of continuing to invest in the PS5, and possibly even the PS4 as well.

PS5 First-Party Game Replaces Creative Director Ahead of Launch

is just a few months away from its planned release for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. However, it seems the studio is shaking things up as has named a new Creative Director for the cooperative first-person shooter. As pointed out by X, Julia Nardin, who was originally the Narrative Director for Marathon, is now the Creative Director for the upcoming shooter. According to her LinkedIn profile, she was given the new role in May 2025. Previously, Steven Cotton was the Creative Director of Marathon. It is currently unclear why Nardin shifted to the new role and what position Cotton now holds after the shift. Nardin has been with Bungie for nearly six years, where she has helped shape the narrative of multiple Destiny seasons. She was promoted to Narrative Director for Destiny: The Final Shape and Marathon. Previously, she was with ArenaNet, working on the popular MMORPG Guild Wars 2. Although the reasoning for the move is unknown, it has caused a bit of a stir for those anticipating Bungie's next release. In a recent Reddit thread about Nardin's new role, gamers have already assumed the worst is coming to PlayStation's next live service game. 'Yeah, changing the director a few months before release does not signify much confidence,' says one user. 'Hopefully after Concord, and the inevitable upcoming failure of Marathon and Fairgames, this signals a full-scale retreat from this kind of cynical cash grab live service horseshit,' says another user. PlayStation's live service effort hasn't quite gone there way. Although Helldivers 2 was a huge success, it was followed by Concord, one of the company's biggest flops in history. Sony has even cancelled some of these projects, including a God of War multiplayer game by Bluepoint Games. Marathon is slated to release on September 23 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
