High-end UK restaurants making minimum spend standard in face of no-shows

Anyone who's spent their youth living in a big city will have a similar story. You and your friends no doubt cobbled together your spare cash to buy the cheapest dish on the menu to share and soak up the buzz of uptown restaurant.
Say goodbye to that romanticised memory of dining in major cities. The latest trend to hit restaurants in some major cities is the minimum spend.
Concerned by rising costs, last-minute cancellations or no-show diners, restaurants are forcing customers to commit to spending a minimum amount of money per head when they attend.
Minimum spends hit the headlines when two Michelin star London restaurant Gymkhana announced that each guest would have to pay at least £100 (€121) on their dinners.
Gymkhana isn't alone. Other restaurants across the UK capital are requiring diners to accept parting with a minimum amount of cash on entry. Fellow gourmet Indian restaurant Chutney Mary demands a £60 (€73) minimum spend, while Hutong in The Shard requires £80 (€97).
The most expensive minimum spend requirement we found in London was the Araki, a sushi restaurant in Mayfair, that charges at least £300 (€364) for the pleasure of eating there.
Pay to reserve
Alongside minimum spends, there has also been a rise in restaurants asking for deposits before bookings. It's not uncommon in London and other major UK cities for a guest's credit card to be charged around £20 (€24) per head to secure the reservation.
What's the reasoning behind these measures? According to Gymkhana, it's 'in part due to the number of cancellations and no-shows we were seeing per service'. However, speaking to the Financial Times, the Indian restaurant explained that after they received their two Michelin stars, their site was inundated with 'large volumes of bots and reservation resale websites'.
Minimum spends and reservation deposits are aimed at tackling a rising trend in the restaurant industry that has plagued live music for some time. New York restaurants have been plagued by bots that make huge swathes of reservations at trendy spots so that people can then bid on the reservation closer to the time.
It's a system that means those with the cash to spare can find a booking at a great restaurant with a moment's notice, but leads to restaurants having no-show reservations and less wealthy potential diners missing out.
No shows, no money
Outside of the bots world, restaurants are also tired of the trend where people book tons of potential reservations ahead of a dinner plan, only to visit just one of the reserved restaurants or none at all.
No-shows are increasingly troubling for restaurants who are facing huge hurdles to remain financially stable. Costs have risen from all corners: rent, energy and ingredients. As a result, high table turnover and increased individual diner spend has become more necessary than ever.
'There's no desire to gouge the guests or the customer in any way,' Matt Tucker, CEO of Tock, a restaurant booking app, told the Financial Times. 'This is just saying, 'we are making a contract between the two of us that you're going to show up and I'm going to provide you the best meal, the best service'.'
Minimum spends might be a reliable way for high-end restaurants with social media buzz in major cities to guarantee reliable income. But it shouldn't be a widespread trend. Any restaurant that serves a local community, values repeat customers, or tries to create an inviting atmosphere is going to struggle with implementing a minimum spend.
While many diners will accept the economic motivation, nothing will cut through any pretense of a convivial charming local eatery than the threat of the card machine lingering over you.
Whether it's the kind of place where you feel brought into someone's home and catered for personally, or a fine dining experience that whisks you away into a world of luxury, the best restaurants allow you to simply enjoy the sumptuous food in front of your and forget that the industry is a goods and service for money exchange.

Designed as a multi-category retail space, the outlet targets a broad consumer demographic. "Apparel Group brand R&B Fashion announced the opening of our 27th store in India, located at Sarjapur, Bengaluru," wrote Apparel Group India Private Limited on Linkedin. "Step into a world of style at R&B, where you'll find a wide selection of fashion for women, men, and kids, along with beauty products, accessories, and more. Fashion retailer Shein and its partner Reliance Retail plan to rapidly expand their Indian supplier base and sell India-made Shein-branded clothes overseas within six to 12 months, according to two people familiar with the matter. The sources said that the China-founded, Singapore-headquartered e-commerce company began discussing its expansion plans with Reliance Retail before the U.S. imposed tariffs on Chinese imports, which prompted Shein to diversify its sourcing. The partners aim to increase the number of Indian suppliers to 1,000 from 150 within a year. Shein told Reuters in a statement that it licensed its brand for use in India. Reliance did not respond to queries. Shein sells low-priced apparel — such as $5 dresses and $10 jeans — directly to customers in around 150 countries, sourcing from 7,000 suppliers in China. The U.S. remains its largest market. Shein is now adjusting to new tariffs on low-value e-commerce packages from China that previously qualified for duty-free import. The retailer launched in India in 2018. In 2020, the Indian government banned its app as part of a broader action targeting China-linked firms during heightened border tensions. In February, Shein returned under a licensing deal with Reliance Industries, which launched to sell Shein-branded clothes made in local factories. In contrast, Shein's other websites primarily offer goods from China. Reliance, controlled by Asia's richest person, Mukesh Ambani, has already contracted 150 garment manufacturers and is in discussions with 400 more, according to the two sources, who requested anonymity due to confidentiality concerns. The partners aim to have 1,000 Indian factories producing Shein-branded clothing within a year, serving both the Indian market and select Shein global websites, the sources said. According to one source, Shein initially plans to list India-made clothes on its U.S. and British websites. The discussions have been ongoing for months. The targeted launch window of six to 12 months may shift depending on how quickly they scale their supplier base. This article marks the first time the supplier expansion scale and export timeline have been reported. Shein confirmed that it licensed its brand for domestic use to Reliance. The company stated, 'Reliance is responsible for manufacturing, supply chain, sales, and operations in the Indian market.' In December, Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal informed Parliament that the Shein-Reliance partnership aimed to build a network of Indian suppliers to sell Shein-branded clothing 'domestically and globally.' On-demand manufacturing Shein is a fast-fashion giant, earning more than $30 billion annually through low prices and aggressive marketing. Most of its products come from China, though it also sources from Turkey and Brazil. Shein's India expansion mirrors growing interest in the country from global fashion and retail players such as Walmart, who seek to diversify sourcing away from China amid the ongoing Sino-U.S. trade war. According to data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, the Shein India app has already reached 2.7 million downloads across Apple and Google Play stores, averaging 120% month-on-month growth. In its first four months, Shein India offered 12,000 designs — just a fraction of the 600,000 products on its U.S. site. In the women's dresses category, its cheapest item sells for 349 Indian rupees ($4), compared to $3.39 on the U.S. site as of June 9. Reliance, which operates the Shein India app, is collaborating with suppliers to determine whether they can reproduce Shein's global best-sellers at lower cost, the sources said. Reliance also plans to adopt Shein's on-demand manufacturing model. The company has asked suppliers to produce as few as 100 pieces per design, scaling up production only for top-selling products. Reliance executives recently visited China to study Shein's 'innovative' supply chain, 'data-driven' design process, and 'disruptive' digital marketing. Manish Aziz, assistant vice president of Shein India at Reliance Retail, described Shein's scale and speed as 'truly incredible' in a LinkedIn post. This partnership adds to Reliance's portfolio of fashion collaborations, which includes brands such as Brooks Brothers and Marks and Spencer. Reliance also operates the e-commerce platform Ajio and competes with Amazon, Walmart's Flipkart, and value retailers such as Tata's Zudio. Reliance plans to work with new suppliers to source fabric — especially synthetic fibers, where India lacks expertise — and will import the necessary machinery, the sources said. Reliance also intends to invest in these suppliers to accelerate their growth and help scale the Shein-Reliance partnership globally.

Launched in 2023, Urban Jungle focuses on contemporary design and functional features tailored to India's mobile, urban consumers. The brand aims to reach Rs 100 crore in annual recurring revenue and plans to open over 15 exclusive outlets in major cities within the next year.
