Grand Canyon hires South Carolina assistant Winston Gandy to take over after Molly Miller's exit

Yahoo24-03-2025

PHOENIX (AP) — Grand Canyon has hired South Carolina assistant Winston Gandy to take over its program after Molly Miller departed for Arizona State.
Gandy had his introductory press conference at Grand Canyon on Monday before returning to South Carolina to help the Gamecocks in their national title defense. He is stepping in for Miller, who went 117-38 in five seasons at Grand Canyon and led the Lopes to an NCAA Tournament berth this year before she was hired by Arizona State.
'I'm beyond honored and absolutely thrilled to be the head coach at Grand Canyon University,' Gandy said in a statement released by the university. 'Grand Canyon is a truly special place, and we will continue to show the world exactly what we're about.'
Gandy is in his second season at South Carolina after spending three seasons as Duke's associate head coach. He also was Maryland's director of recruiting operations in 2013-14, and later worked in player development with the Washington Wizards and had a three-season run as an assistant at Rice.
'Over the past two seasons with our program at South Carolina, I've seen first-hand his incredible work ethic, recruiting talent and passion for the game,' South Carolina coach Dawn Staley said in a statement. 'Winston is one of the hardest workers and best recruiters in our sport, and he's a true student of the game. More importantly, he genuinely cares about our players and builds real relationships on and off the court.'
Gandy takes over a Grand Canyon program that just finished a 32-3 season. The Lopes had won 30 consecutive games before their 73-60 loss to Baylor in the first round of the NCAA tourney.

Spartanburgers' Jones earns SAL honor

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Minor League Baseball and the South Atlantic League have named Hub City Spartanburgers' outfielder Keith Jones II as South Atlantic League Player of the Week for the week of June 2–8. Jones is the first Hub City position player to win a SAL honor. 'Keith's consistency day in and day out has led him to where he is, and where he's going,' said Drew Sannes, Spartanburgers' hitting coach. 'There's been some small adjustments getting him back to who he knows he can be on a nightly basis, but the dedication to the work & process really sets him apart.' Jones bashed four doubles and three home runs last series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers. All three long balls came over the final four games of the series. In total, his seven extra-base hits were the most of any High-A hitter. The New Mexico State product played in all six games of the series and smashed nine hits on the way to a .409 batting average and a 1.500 OPS for the week. 'It's exciting when he steps to the plate because you know there's going to be a quality at bat that could end up changing the outcome of any game,' said Sannes. 'We're excited to see where his continued work leads him moving forward over the next few months.' Hub City's outfielder, the Rangers' ninth round pick in 2024, is the first Spartanburgers field player to win a South Atlantic League award, but second 'Burger overall. Right-handed starter David Davalillo won Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of April 15-20 and was also awarded May Pitcher of the Month. The Spartanburgers welcome the Wilmington Blue Rocks to Fifth Third Park for six games beginning June 10. Jones and crew will grace the diamond at 6:35 p.m. ET Tuesday to begin the series. Naylor hits grand slam in 11th and Diamondbacks recover to beat Mariners 8-4

Associated Press PHOENIX (AP) — Josh Naylor hit a game-ending grand slam in the 11th inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Seattle Mariners 8-4 on Monday night after losing closer Justin Martinez with two outs in the ninth and then blowing a four-run lead. Corbin Carroll launched a leadoff homer and Naylor had three hits and five RBIs for the Diamondbacks, who stopped a three-game skid. Martinez entered to start the ninth with Arizona leading 4-0 and struck out Jorge Polanco and Randy Arozarena to begin the inning. The right-hander then walked Dylan Moore on a full count and threw a pitch to Donovan Solano before calling for an athletic trainer. Jeff Brigham came in and gave up RBI singles to Solano and Cole Young before Dominic Canzone tied it with a 450-foot, two-run drive to right field for his first homer this season. Juan Morillo retired slugger Cal Raleigh with two runners aboard to finally end the inning. Morillo then pitched a perfect 10th and Jalen Beeks (2-0) got three straight outs in the 11th. Naylor homered to right-center with one out on a 1-2 pitch from Carlos Vargas (1-5), who was working his second inning in relief. Vargas loaded the bases with a walk to Geraldo Perdomo that followed an intentional walk to Ketel Marte. ___ AP MLB: recommended
