Recommendation goes back to barrier basics for Bletchingly

The Australian25-07-2025
A barrier refresher course and weight-for-age conditions could give smart sprinter Recommendation a shot at a second Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes success.
Recommendation won last year's Bletchingly Stakes during a super patch of form that included claiming the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes and The Heath 1100 on the Caulfield course.

The Ciaron Maher-trained sprinter was not disgraced at Group 1 level in the Manikato Stakes in the spring but struggled at his first attempt at international competition in the Hong Kong Sprint last December.
The rising six-year-old ran fairly first-up before struggling down the Flemington straight last month but Maher's assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said some barrier work produced an improved third in the Monash Stakes on July 12.
Turnbull said Recommendation gave away too much weight in his first two runs this time in before improving at weight-for-age in the Monash Stakes.
The same conditions will apply in the Bletchingly Stakes.
• Spring carnival worth the weight for Stockdale
'He's never really fired down the straight and he got it pretty wrong and worked up two back so there were excuses,' Turnbull said.
'Last year, prior to the Bletchingly, he'd had such a good prep so he's pretty much handicapped himself so getting back to weight-for-age will help.
'These two races (the Monash and Bletchingly Stakes) are his chance to get back to the winner's stall.'

Turnbull said Recommendation had spent time under the tutelage of noted barrier educator Julien Welsh to repair bad habits that had crept into the gelding's barrier routine.
He said a fast start was vital to Recommendation's racing style but the son of Shalaa had not given himself the chance to jump quickly in recent runs.
• Cherish a good track: Caulfield weather watch for smart filly
'That was his asset, stepping away from the gates and holding a prominent spot,' Turnbull said.
'He was just getting uptight, standing back in the gates and being very negative.
'They just get into bad habits.
'They might get away with something and they continue it on, they might get a bit tired or a bit grumpy or whatever it is.
'He's just a lot more comfortable in there. He stands up in the 'V' at the front of the gates, which is key, and he's very receptive to stepping away.'
Turnbull said the return of blinkers to Recommendation's gear would also help the winner of nine of 26 starts regain his best form.
Recommendation has firmed from $8.50 to $7.50 while the Corstens and Larkin-trained Baraqiel is the easing favourite, drifting from $2.90 to $3.20.

NEXT BEST Race 4 No.2: HELLINDA Raced 19 times, won twice, runner-up seven times. Beat a good field when won here. VALUE BET Race 2 No.5: BRUME DE SOLIEL Could be ready to deliver third-up. Headed in the right direction. DAILY DOUBLE 1st Leg: 11, 2nd Leg: 1. QUADDIE Race 4: 2, 5 Race 5: 2, 5, 12 Race 6: 7 Race 7: 1, 4, 5 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW Quayde Krogh has a red-hot chance of winning the TAB Jockeys Challenge. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ MORUYA INSIDE MAIL RACE 1: MAIDEN PLATE (1020m) PERFORMING DIVA (7) has a globally recognisable pedigree, her fourth dam is the mother of Storm Cat while her fifth dam foaled down Royal Academy. Trainer Pat Murphy scratched Performing Diva from Forbes on Sunday and Wagga on Monday to run here and for good reason. AZZUCCA (4) has finished runner-up twice in six starts to date. In a good stable, Jeff Penza on, and has done enough in better races than this one. EAGERLY AWAITS (9) is very hard to line up with two starts, two seconds, one at Morphettville Parks and at Murray Bridge. BET: PERFORMING DIVA to win. RACE 2: MAIDEN HANDICAP (1310m) BRUME DE SOLIEL (5) is '8x77' leading into this but the two runs this preparation, she was beaten 'only' 4½ then six lengths but keep in mind that she was in a field of 14 last time and closed off rather well. This is not an especially deep race. SHOREMAN (9) who races in the colours of the Northern Suburbs Shute Shield team, is yet to score in his six starts but he's pretty nippy and could be hard to catch from box one in this line-up. ICONIQUE (1) was $101 first run for Nick Olive on July 21 and ran a career-best third. Might have turned a corner? BET: BRUME DE SOLIEL each-way, box trifecta 1, 3, 5, 9. RACE 3: CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1020m) LAGUNA SECA (3) is by Sebring, both horses are named after motor-racing tracks in California and Florida respectively. Laguna Seca is a locally-trained gelding who has three thirds from four Moruya starts. While all of his best form is on good tracks, it wouldn't be right to say he is a duffer. Tom Wilson has had GIZA (5) flying since he bought her off Godolphin. She has won twice and placed twice in nine runs including a really impressive one here last start. COMMANDORO (10) has some fabulous numbers here at home. BET: LAGUNA SECA to win. RACE 4: BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1210m) HELLINDA (2) has finished first or second at nine of his 19 starts; that said only two of them are wins so he has been quite costly for punters. That said, he is a lot more consistent and competitive than most. What really makes him almost impossible to go past here is that he won over this track and trip three runs back beating Winning Emotions (goes well!). BLUE BAYOU (5) was $18 into $13 and almost landed the plunge when a close and closing second to Deni Girl in a 1210m Benchmark 58 here on July 21. Reliable type. SNAPPY JIM (1) excels on Heavy tracks. BET: HELLINDA to win, quinella 2, 5. RACE 5: COUNTRY BOOSTED MAIDEN PLATE (1435m) SAWMILL (12) is a Gerry Harvey-bred son of All Too Hard out of Testa Rossa mare with broodmare sires including Secretariat, Nasrullah and Man O' War. Apart from being rather well bred, Sawmill is rather handy too, certainly by maiden standards, given she has placed in all five starts to date and in some uncommonly strong maidens too. BRANNUM (2) likewise has placed at every start he's had so far, that's two seconds and a third. Big run here first-up, not sure about the draw though. FEEDBACK (5) is another Gerry Harvey-bred participant; only he kept this one. BET: SAWMILL to win, Daily Double 1st Leg 12, 2nd Leg 1. RACE 6: COUNTRY BOOSTED BENCHMARK 66 HANDICAP (1435m) VERMICELLA (7) is owned and bred by that man again, Gerry Harvey! The Joe Cleary-trained mare will be off to Baramul to join the broodmare band next spring rather than this one you'd think. By the by, she is a daughter of Pierro is from one of Harvey's best families – St Kate. Cleary has ensured that she will retire with a handy little record of (as it stands today) three wins and three seconds from eight starts. Run twice at Moruya and KO'ed Stallone at the first one. Let's stay with the 'Rocky' theme for a minute given the presence of EPAULLO CREED (2) (close enough!). In fine form. BET: VERMICELLA to win, box trifecta 2, 3, 4, 7. RACE 7: BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1660m) PERUNO (1) was bred by guess who? Gerry Harvey. A son of the aforementioned Pierro, this gelding is a descendant of Denise's Joy. Though born and raised at Baramul in the Widden Valley, Peruno is very much a Moruya local having raced there 19 times for three wins, three second and five thirds. On top of that, he has a win and a second from three runs at the track/trip. One for one on heavy too. BEAUER (5) paid for himself in the trip away to Grafton with back-to-back placings. Go well here. EASEMENT (4) and SOUL TAKER (6) have claims. BET: PERUNO each-way. Horse Racing The dynamic duo of trainer Joe Cleary and Gerry Harvey can add to their extraordinary tally of shared winners in back-to-back races at Moruya Horse Racing Champion mare Via Sistina will lead an all-star cast of horses at Thursday's delayed barrier trials as the full list of finalists for the Australian Racehorse of the Year awards were announced.

Anxious galloper Tuff Tu Mus wins seventh city race in row at Eagle Farm

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. It's as rare as hen's teeth that a horse wins seven metropolitan races in a row. And especially one who is as quirky as David Vandyke's gelding Tuff Tu Mus who has battled anxiety to the extent that his trainer often brings him to the races even when he's not racing. It might have been a low-key, off-season city meeting at Eagle Farm but the continued emergence of Tuff Tu Mus threw up a feel-good story. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Tuff Tu Mus means 'bloody tough' in Bislama, the national language of Vanuatu where his owner John Fordham, who hails from small town Croppa Creek near Moree in northern NSW, runs a kava factory. The five-year-old gelding is not only as tough as his name suggests, but also has more than his fair share of enigmatic ability. Starting at $1.70 in a BM90 Handicap as he stretched out over 1815m for the first time, jockey Ryan Maloney sent Tuff Tu Mus to the lead in the Eagle Farm straight and he did enough to hold on. He didn't beat any worldbeaters and the manner of his win wasn't dynamic – but he clocked up his latest triumph in a seven-race winning streak which dates back to October last year. Tuff Tu Mus has now won seven from nine but Vandyke revealed the quirky galloper had been to the races much more than the race book indicates. He often travels to the races on race day but stays in the stalls, just to help get him more used to the process and ease his highly-strung nature. 'He has got that underlying anxiety in him,' Vandyke said. 'He has had nine starts, but he has probably been to the races 25 times. 'He was here last Saturday even though he didn't race, we bring him all the time. 'My staff have absolutely cuddled him and looked after him, it's been a real team effort.' Trainer David Vandyke. Picture: Grant Peters, Trackside Photography. Vandyke said he had never had a horse wins seven consecutive city races before, although he had his now retired galloper Weona Smartone win eight in a row. 'Alligator Blood got beaten in the Caulfield Guineas (in 2019) but he won five consecutive races before that, and five after it,' Vandyke said. 'It takes a decent horse to put together a good winning streak. 'Tuff Tu Mus will go for a deserved spell now, but I think he has a nice future. 'There is an 1800m race on Gold Coast Magic Millions day which could be nice for him, which is why I wanted to test him over that distance today.' Champion trainer Tony Gollan finished the day with a bang when ex-Godolphin galloper Pereille saluted at short odds when being one of the best placed horses in Australia, scoring the Class Six Plate (1200m). Meanwhile, Ben Thompson rode his first winner since returning from Hong Kong when Rex Lipp-trained Redzoust ($17) got the chocolates in the BM70 Handicap (1400m).
