Tennessee running back 'has done an elite job' since transferring ahead of 2025 season
No. 18 Tennessee kicked off fall training camp on July 30. Rankings reflect the US LBM Coaches Poll. The Vols held their first scrimmage on Aug. 9 at Neyland Stadium after seven practices at Haslam Field. Following Tennessee's first scrimmage in fall camp, fifth-year head Josh Heupel discussed Duke senior transfer running back Star Thomas and his progression from spring practices. 'He's a dramatically different player,' Heupel said. 'Just his body, his movement, explosiveness, his physicality with the ball and without the ball. Some of the details and fundamentals that it takes in pass protection, special teams as well, he has done an elite job from the end of spring ball to where we are through practice eight.' The 6-foot, 210-pound running back recorded 871 yards and seven touchdowns on 213 rushing attempts in 2024 for the Blue Devils. He also totaled 20 receptions for 153 yards and one touchdown. Thomas transferred to Duke after playing at New Mexico State from 2022-23. He recorded 1,173 rushing yards, nine rushing touchdowns, 34 receptions, 351 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns at New Mexico State. Thomas began his collegiate career at Coffeyville Community College in 2021.
