LABUAN: Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) personnel have been reminded to exercise prudence and professionalism when using social media, as digital platforms now hold considerable influence over public opinion and the reputation of institutions. Its Director-General Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad said platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, Instagram and YouTube could serve as powerful tools to promote the department's image when used responsibly. He stressed, however, that the management of public perception on social media must be approached with caution. 'Misuse of these platforms, particularly through emotional or misleading criticism could jeopardise the credibility of the department. 'Our personnel must remain neutral and refrain from making unfounded comments or disseminating inaccurate information that could discredit any party or provoke public sensitivity,' he said at the Fire Service Medal Award Ceremony, 2024 Excellent Service Award, 30-Year Service Certificate and Commendable Service Certificate at a leading hotel, here, Tuesday. 'Upholding these regulations is crucial to maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of the department,' he said. Nor Hisham also outlined several strategic areas of focus for the Labuan JBPM this year, among them is the continued commitment to the Labuan Emergency Mutual Aid (Lema) framework, which is vital in managing risks associated with the island's oil and gas sector. He noted the need to review the Lema manual, as the current version refers to the now-defunct MKN Directive No. 20, which has been replaced by the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) Directive No. 1. Nor Hisham highlighted the department's role in promoting water safety awareness in line with the Government's Chase (Clean, Healthy, Advanced, Safe and Eco-Friendly) City vision. Chase City vision particularly follows the RM39 million allocation for the Victoria Harbour Beach waterfront development. 'JBPM will be responsible for advising on and enforcing water safety standards as part of its duties under the Majlis Keselamatan Aktiviti Air (MKAA),' he said. He further announced that the Federal Government has approved the construction of 72 new quarters for the staff of the Labuan JBPM, at a total cost of RM70 million, with RM300,000 allocated for 2025. He called on local officers to ensure that the project would be carried out according to the schedule. Nor Hisham also reiterated JBPM's support for the 'One Billion Readiness Initiatives', which aims to train 4.5 million people in fire and emergency response from 2025 to 2027. 'This includes delivering 12,000 community education programmes to increase public preparedness,' he said. Commending Labuan JBPM's outstanding achievements in physical fitness and competency, he noted their perfect 100 per cent pass rate in the Firefighter Fitness Test and remarkable success in the Wellness Hub programme, which surpassed its target with a 162 per cent completion rate. United Nations and Asean urge global community to protect oceans under threat
PHNOM PENH / ASEAN (Bernama): The United Nations and Asean has warned on Sunday that oceans which provide an abundance of food and jobs for millions around the world are facing numerous threats and are in dire need of attention. The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, in his message on World Oceans Day 2025, urged global governments and partners to collectively protect the vast oceans from growing pollution and prevent exploitation of marine resources. "Our ocean has not only shaped cultures, stirred imaginations, and inspired wonder across the ages; it also supplies the air we breathe, the food we eat, the jobs we need and the climate we count on. "But today, the ocean needs our help. World Oceans Day is celebrated on June 8, with this year's theme "Wonder: Sustaining what sustains us'. According to the UN, the ocean produces at least 50 per cent of the planet's oxygen, is home to most of Earth's biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people. It will also be a lifeline to about 40 million people who are being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030, said the UN website. But over the years, 90 per cent of big fish populations have depleted and 50 per cent of coral reefs have been destroyed, as people continue to exploit marine resources on a large scale without replenishing them. In the region, Asean echoed a similar message, warning of multiple threats to the seas - from pollution to climate change. "Across Asean our seas support livelihoods, feed millions and hold vast natural and cultural heritage. "However, our oceans are under threat from pollution, overexploitation and climate change. Asean joins the global call to protect and sustainably manage our marine ecosystems for generations to come,' the regional grouping said in a Facebook posting today. Global leaders are gathering to attend the third UN Ocean Conference co-hosted by France and Costa Rica and held in Nice, France from June 9 to 13, 2025. -- Bernama

The embassy also welcomed a visiting delegation from the Royal Military College (RMC), comprising 32 Putera cadets and five officers at the celebration. Sultan of Kelantan donates five cows for MAIK's 'korban' programme
KOTA BARU: The Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Muhammad V, has graciously donated five cows for the 'korban' Jama'ie (sacrificial ritual) programme organised by the Kelantan Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIK) in conjunction with Aidiladha. The annual programme to support the asnaf (eligible recipients) community through the distribution of sacrificial meat was held at the field of Kompleks Islam Jubli Perak Sultan Ismail Petra field in Panji, here, today. MAIK president Tengku Tan Sri Mohamad Rizam Tengku Abdul Aziz, who is also the Tengku Temenggong of Kelantan, said the five cows were part of a total of 49 that were slaughtered and distributed to 2,000 asnaf in the Kota Baru district. "The sacrificial meat is distributed to the poor and needy through state-administered mosques. "Each recipient will receive two kg of meat and bones. "Every year, the korban ceremony organised by MAIK is a lively and well-attended affair, supported by cattle donations from members of the royal family, government agencies and the public," he added. At the event, Tengku Mahkota of Kelantan, Tengku Muhammad Fakhry Petra was present to witness the slaughter of the five sacrificial cows. The Crown Prince spent about 40 minutes with more than 500 residents during the sacrificial ceremony before departing. At the same event, Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud also performed the slaughter of a cow as part of the programme. – Bernama
