Varanasi: On the occasion of the 97th Foundation Day of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), an agreement for seed production of the advanced okra (bhindi) variety 'Kashi Sahishnu' was signed between the Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR), Varanasi, and Ador Seeds India Private Limited, Pune.
The agreement was facilitated through CEO of ICAR's company AgriInnovate, Praveen Malik, in a ceremony held in the presence of Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan and director general of ICAR & Secretary, Agricultural Education and Research ML Jat in New Delhi on Thursday. IIVR director Rajesh Kumar signed the technology transfer documents with the CEO Malik and exchanged them.
Under this partnership, India's leading seed production company can now produce seeds of this advanced okra variety and directly reach farmers in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Punjab.
According to Pradeep Karmakar, the breeder scientist of this advanced variety, 'Kashi Sahishnu' (VRO-111) is recommended for cultivation in the four agricultural zones, including Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, and is notified under gazette notification number SO 1362 (E) dated March 12, 2024.

The IIVR director said that years of relentless scientific effort went into developing this variety. Along with intensive research by scientists, repeated field demonstrations and the special role of the Institute's Technology Management Unit (ITMU) were crucial. "Kashi Sahishnu variety is extremely beneficial for farmers because it is resistant to two major viral diseases, which will require farmers to use fewer pesticides and reduce production costs," he said, adding that due to its higher productivity, farmers' income can increase by 20-23%.
According to him, considering the commercial benefits of this okra variety, several other companies have also applied for its license, which are being considered.
Nagendra Rai, head of the Crop Improvement Division, said that due to the better fruit quality of this variety, farmers will get good prices in the market, and labour costs will also be reduced due to ease in harvesting and packing.

India-UAE non-oil trade poised to hit $100B investments by 2030: UAE's economy minister

Hyderabad: Thanks to the significant boost provided by the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to the economic relationship between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), bilateral non-oil trade is expected to surpass $100 billion annually by 2030, UAE's Minister of Economy and Tourism, Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, told TOI here on Thursday. He said UAE is India's third-largest trading partner globally, and UAE companies are increasingly looking to invest in India not just in sectors such as food processing, infrastructure, and retail, but also in areas such as renewable energy, green hydrogen, waste management and circularity, data centres, defence and space, fintech, and tourism, among others. Speaking on the sidelines of the UAE govt's Investopia conclave here, the minister pointed out that by the end of Sept 2023, UAE's direct investments in India reached nearly $17 billion, positioning the UAE as India's seventh-largest global investor. Indian investments in the UAE amounted to $8 billion, making India the second-largest investor globally in the UAE. The minister said that CEPA led to a remarkable surge in trade, with bilateral non-oil trade reaching $65 billion in 2024, marking a 19.7% year-on-year increase. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Stylish New Mobility Scooters Available for Seniors (Prices May Surprise You) Mobility Scooter | Search Ads Search Now Undo This, he pointed out, is more than double the trade level of $27.9 billion in 2020, prior to the CEPA agreement. The current bilateral trade spans several high-growth sectors, including precious metals, machinery, agritech, iron and steel, and aluminium. "A lot of investments are coming. A lot of trade is coming. The B2B relationship is really pushing the partnership and CEPA to the next level. Our relationship with India is very strategic, which is why of the 15 Investopia events we have done globally, five have been held in India. But now the focus is on deepening the relationship to the state level, which is why we conducted it in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh this time," he explained.

Kendrapada farmers face fertiliser shortage

1 2 Kendrapada: Farmers in the coastal district of Kendrapada are grappling with a severe shortage of fertilisers, raising concerns over potential crop failures and financial losses. Narendra Mallick, a 54-year-old farmer from Marsaghai, expressed his frustration, stating, "I am disappointed as I have not been able to get fertilisers from the registered dealers or the primary agriculture society. I have prepared my two acres of land for paddy cultivation, but the lack of fertilisers is distressing." Rabindra Behera, another farmer from Bharatpur village, echoed these concerns. "The fertiliser crisis at the beginning of the kharif season is a serious concern. Unscrupulous traders have stockpiled fertilisers, creating an artificial crisis, and the agriculture department has not made efforts to supply them on time," Behera said. The shortage has forced many farmers to purchase fertilisers at exorbitant rates from black marketeers, according to Umesh Chandra Singh, a farmers' leader and president of the district unit of krishak sabha. "We are demanding the immediate release of fertilisers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Otherwise, the paddy saplings will wither away, leading to huge losses," warned Ajaya Das, a farmer from Iswarapur village. Suresh Chandra Mallick, the chief district agriculture officer (CDAO) of Kendrapada, stated, "Around 3.6 lakh farmers in Kendrapada have raised paddy over 1.24 lakh hectares of land, requiring around 14,400 metric tonnes of fertiliser. We have received 5,120.42 metric tonnes from the govt and expect more soon. We have entrusted 121 primary agricultural cooperative societies to distribute fertilisers, and stringent action will be taken against those selling spurious fertilisers. " The early arrival of the monsoon had initially brought hope to the farmers, but the fertiliser shortage now threatens to derail the govt's plans to boost agriculture as a key development sector. "If the authorities do not act fast, paddy saplings in large areas will die," said Rajanikanta Behera, a farmer from Shyamsundarpur. Farmers' leader Ramani Ranjan Routray suggested that the agriculture department should promote the use of organic compost and vermicompost to reduce dependency on chemical fertilisers.
