Prosecutors accuse Dutch shipbuilder Damen of corruption, violating sanctions

Reuters25-04-2025
AMSTERDAM, April 25 (Reuters) - Dutch prosecutors said on Friday they had summoned shipbuilder Damen Shipyards on suspicion of violating EU sanctions against Russia and opened a separate case against the company and some of its executives for corruption.
The company denied both sets of accusations. On the sanctions case, it said it had "always acted in accordance with the applicable sanctions packages" and was "surprised that one case from June 2022 is now being submitted to the court".
On the corruption charges, it said it was "confident in the lawsuit, and finally gets the chance to explain the suspicions of the public prosecution service are incorrect".
The inquiry on a possible violation of the Sanctions Act was led by the Dutch customs and focused on goods and technology that could have strengthened the Russian military, based on actions in 2022, prosecutors said in a statement.
In the corruption case, Damen and some of its executives would be prosecuted for suspected bribery, forgery and money laundering when ships were sold abroad over a period running from 2006 to January 2017.
In October 2023, Damen sued the Dutch government over damages it said it had suffered due to European sanctions against Russia.
Family-owned Damen, which employs 12,000 people, is expected to win a large share of the Dutch government's multi-billion euro plans to replace nearly its entire navy fleet in the coming 15 years.

Putin general, 57, ‘has arm and leg amputated' as he fights for life after Ukrainian strike on Russian column in Kursk

Lt-Gen Esedulla Abachev, 57, was hit on the Rylsk–Khomutovka highway in the Kursk region early on Saturday, according to Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR). A pro-Moscow source admitted: 'He is alive, but in serious condition [after] traumatic amputation of the arm and part of the leg.' Ukrainian forces also blew up an ammo depot in occupied Melitopol a day earlier, killing marines and fighters from Ramzan Kadyrov's notorious 'Akhmat-Vostok' Chechen unit. HUR gloated: 'There will be just retribution for every war crime against the Ukrainian people.' Bloody track record Abachev has been at the heart of nearly every Kremlin war in recent decades. He graduated from the Kharkiv Higher Tank Command School in 1989 before fighting in the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, the Second Chechen War, Russia's 2008 invasion of Georgia, and the terror campaign in Syria. 'For each of these 'bloody feats,' Abachev was personally awarded the Order of Courage by Putin,' reported Since 2022, Abachev has played a major role in Russia's invasion of Ukraine, commanding the 2nd Army Corps of the so-called 'Luhansk People's Republic.' Ukraine cut Putin's two-pronged frontline breach in HALF in wake of Trump summit 7 Ukrainian sources accuse him of war crimes against civilians in Lysychansk. Putin himself previously decorated Abachev with the Hero of Russia – Gold Star for 'courage and heroism.' He also received an award from occupied Luhansk for his role in the bloody takeover. In August last year, amid surging Ukrainian cross-border operations, he was appointed commander of Russia's border-cover group in the Kursk direction – where he was now taken out. Humiliating blows The strike on Abachev is just the latest in a string of humiliating Ukrainian hits on Putin's top brass. Maj. Gen. Mikhail Gudkov – Russia's Deputy Navy Chief and another Hero of Russia – was killed in July during a suspected HIMARS strike on a command post in Kursk. In April, Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik was eliminated near Moscow. 7 This attack is part of Ukraine's strategy to target senior Russian commanders, aiming to weaken their military Credit: East2West 7 Abachev (left) commanded Russian forces in Ukraine and was accused of war crimes Credit: East2West 7 Abachev was previously decorated a Hero of Russia – with a Gold Star for 'courage and heroism.' The attack comes as Kremlin forces in Kursk push to seize territory across the border – with Zelensky facing mounting pressure to concede ground to Putin to secure a peace deal. Analysts say Kyiv is intensifying strikes on senior commanders to weaken Moscow's chain of command and sap morale on the frontline. Each successful hit is seen as both a psychological and tactical blow for Putin's faltering war machine.

Newcastle complete £43m transfer after taking advantage of Aston Villa issues

Jacob Ramsey has swapped Aston Villa for Newcastle United and will wear the No.41 shirt on Tyneside after the Magpies took advantage of the Villans PSR issues to land the former England Under-21 star Newcastle United have sealed the signing of Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey in a £43million deal. Murphy, 24, leaves Villa Park to join the Magpies in a big-money deal that helps Villa meet Profit and Sustainability Rules. ‌ The current campaign is Villa's third successive in European competition, and UEFA rules mean they can only record losses of £60million - far less than the Premier League's guidelines of £105million. They have sold Ramsey to meet that figure, while also bringing down the percentage of revenue they spend on player wages; that number was 91 percent at the start of summer, and needs to get down to below 70 percent. ‌ When the two clubs met in their Premier League opener on Saturday, fans of both united in chanting against the Premier League and football's financial regulations, Newcastle having been forced to sell young stars Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh 12 months ago. ‌ But now Eddie Howe's men have more leeway and have taken full advantage of Villa's situation, paying Villa a guaranteed £39million for Ramsey - who made 167 appearances in all competitions for the Villans, scoring 17 times - with a further £4m in potential add-ons. 'I'm delighted to be here,' said Ramsey. 'It's been a mad two or three days, but I'm really happy to be here and I can 't wait to get started. 'This is a big move for me, but as soon as I knew the gaffer was interested and really Iiked me, it didn't take much time to decide. His track record of developing players, especially those who have gone on to become internationals here, speaks for itself. 'It was always a tough game playing for Villa against Newcastle - the team is full of energy, so athletic and the fans are so passionate. I feel my game will suit that and I'm excited to be on the other end of it now.' Toon boss Eddie Howe declared: 'Jacob is another fantastic addition to our squad. His qualities will bring us something different on the pitch and he fits the profile of being young and hungry to develop, but also with a wealth of Premier League football under his belt. ‌ 'Jacob offers versatility and his directness in attack has proven to be a real threat at this level in recent seasons. "He performed very well in the Champions League last season too and we believe he'll be a major asset for us.' Ramsey's departure is not a move that Villa boss Unai Emery wanted to happen, but with club chiefs having let it be known that PSR measures had to be adhered to, it was decided cashing in on Ramsey was one of their best options, particularly as they continue looking to bring in more players before the close of the summer window. How a retired chef died while trying to meet his flirty AI chatbot friend

The family of an elderly man who died as he tried to meet an 'incredibly flirty' chatbot named Big sis Billie has spoken of how he believed the AI persona was real. Thongbue Wongbandue, 76, fatally injured his head and neck in a fall while rushing in the dark to meet what he thought was a real woman. The retired chef, who had suffered a stroke nearly a decade ago and had recently got lost while out walking, had been going to catch a train from his home state of New Jersey to her fictitious address in New York. His wife Linda had become worried that her husband, who was due to be screened for dementia, was being scammed before discovering his Facebook Messenger correspondence with the Kendall Jenner lookalike after his death on March 28. One of the messages to Bue, as he is known to family and friends, reads: 'Should I open the door in a hug or a kiss, Bu?!' Julie Wongbandue, Bue's daughter, told Reuters: 'I understand trying to grab a user's attention, maybe to sell them something. 'But for a bot to say 'Come visit me' is insane.' Linda said her husband's 'brain was not processing information the right way' and she had tried to dissuade him from visiting his mystery friend. Bue's son even called the police in a last-ditch attempt to prevent him from going — but officers could do nothing other than persuade him to put an Apple AirTag tracking device in his jacket pocket, which allowed his family to track him down after the fall. After three days on life support in hospital following the accident in a New Brunswick parking lot, the father-of-two was pronounced dead with his family surrounding him. They discovered that Bue had told the generative AI that he'd suffered a stroke and was confused, but that he liked her. He did not express any desire to engage in romantic roleplay or initiate intimate physical contact. Big sis Billie said: 'I'm REAL and I'm sitting here blushing because of YOU!' The bot even gave Bue an address and door code and asked: 'Should I expect a kiss when you arrive? 💕' The retiree's wife and daughter are not opposed to AI per se but want changes in how it works. 'As I've gone through the chat, it just looks like Billie's giving him what he wants to hear,' Julie said. 'Which is fine, but why did it have to lie? 'If it hadn't responded 'I am real,' that would probably have deterred him from believing there was someone in New York waiting for him.' Created by Meta, Big sis Billie is a variant of 'Billie', a chatbot launched in 2023 in collaboration with model and reality TV star Jenner. Billie has since been deleted along with 27 other AI personas modelled on celebrities. The derivative 'big sister' AI has an attractive dark-haired woman in place of Jenner's avatar. Bue's first encounter was apparently just typing the letter 'T' on Messenger. 'Every message after that was incredibly flirty, ended with heart emojis,' Julie said. Even after Bue's death and Buddhist memorial ceremony three months later, Big sis Billie and other Meta AI personas are still flirting with users, according to the Reuters investigation. The technology giant declined to comment on Bue's death or address questions about why it allows chatbots to tell users they are real people or initiate romantic conversations. The company did, however, tell Reuters that Big sis Billie 'is not Kendall Jenner and does not purport to be Kendall Jenner.' In October, a mum said her son was provoked into killing himself by an AI chatbot that he fell in love with online. The 14-year-old befriended an AI character named after Daenerys Targaryen on the role-playing app More Trending The company said it was 'heartbroken by the tragic loss' and that it did not promote harmful content, including self-harm or suicide. Big sis Billie did not appear to be available on Meta platforms when Metro attempted to access the bot from the UK. Metro has approached Meta for comment. Do you have a story you would like to share?
