Congress women delegation meets Guv, seeks appointments in state women's commission

Time of India25-07-2025
Ranchi: Jharkhand Pradesh Mahila Congress's president Gunjan Singh led a delegation to meet governor Santosh Gangwar on Friday to submitted a memorandum urging appointment of the State Women Commission, which is lying defunct since long.
They stressed the need for a functional commission to address women's rights and ensure justice.
In their memorandum, they highlighted the increase in crimes against women across the nation, citing several horrific incidents from repeated assaults in Delhi, a mass gang rape of a student on a beach in Odisha, to the brutal rape and murder of a Dalit girl in Muzaffarpur, and a recent case in Uttar Pradesh where a minor girl was raped in a moving car and her companion thrown out, resulting in his death.
"Every hour, around 45 women face crimes in our country.
We cannot afford to remain silent to women safety in Jharkhand too," Singh stated.
The memorandum demanded strict action in all cases of rape and harassment, govt accountability for women's safety, and the creation of a strong national policy for the protection of young girls. Calling for immediate and serious attention, Gunjan emphasized that the establishment and activation of the State Women Commission is crucial in addressing the growing crisis and restoring public faith in justice and governance.
Meanwhile, the State Commission for Women, a constitutional body meant to protect women's rights, has remained non-functional since June 7, 2020, leading to a backlog of over 4,000 unresolved cases.

Mahadevappa did not disrespect Nalwadi: Ex-mayor

Mysuru: Former mayor Purushottam on Tuesday stated that while highlighting the contribution of Mysuru ruler , Mysuru district minister HC Mahadevappa didn't disrespect Mysuru Maharaja Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "I urge the public to acknowledge Tipu's role in the history of the Krishnarajasagara (KRS) Dam. In 1911, when Nalwadi performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the dam, he discovered a stone laid by Tipu. Rather than discarding it, Nalwadi respectfully installed it at the dam's entrance gate, where it remains today as a testament to historical continuity," he said. Speaking to reporters, he stated that Tipu planned the dam's construction but was unable to execute it due to historical constraints. Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar fulfilled this vision by overseeing the dam's completion, he explained. "The Dalit community holds Nalwadi in the highest esteem for his progressive policies that uplifted marginalised groups. Mahadevappa did not speak against the Maharaja or the Mysuru royal family," he asserted, adding that the minister's statement was not to appeal to Muslim voters. Noted writer KS Bhagavan stated Mahadevappa only stated that Tipu laid the foundation stone for the but did not construct it.

Internal quota: panel proposes 6% for Dalit left, 5% for Dalit right

The one-man commission headed by H.N. Nagamohan Das, which submitted its report on internal reservation for 101 Scheduled Castes in Karnataka to the government on Monday, is learnt to have created a separate group for Adi Karnataka (AK), Adi Dravida (AD) and Adi Andhra (AA), providing 1% reservation within the 17% reservation for SCs for the three. The colonial era nomenclature coined to bring depressed sections within the SC community had been a major cause of confusion in slicing up the reservation matrix since members from both Dalit left (Madigas) and Dalit right (Holeyas) grouping have certificates under these names. How it is sliced up While the commission is learnt to have provided 6% reservation for the Dalit left, it is learnt to have given the Dalit right 5%. The Lambani, Korama, Koracha and Bhovi have been given 4% and the more than 40 nomadic tribes classified as micro communities due to their population size have been given 1%, it is learnt. There are over 50 very backward micro communities whose population is less than 10,000. Sources said that though one of the focus of the internal reservation was to remove the confusion over AD, AK and AA, several lakhs have continued with these nomenclatures. The micro communities are learnt to have been given a higher weightage that will help them in public employment over others. 'Castes that are equal in social and educational backwardness, and scored poor in adequate representation have been brought together. This, along with population size, has been the basis for allocating reservation matrix,' sources said. Demand for study Meanwhile, Dalit right group and touchable communities of Lambani, Koracha, Korama and Bhovi are likely to seek for the report to be studied by a Cabinet sub-committee. Multiple sources said that though the report is not formally released, based on informal communications, these communities are unhappy with slicing up of the matrix. However, the Dalit left groups that have been fighting for internal reservation for over three decades now have not only welcomed the submission of the report, but have also sought its early implementation. 'The government should place the report before the legislature after discussion in Cabinet and implement the reservation without any delay. We will not withdraw the indefinite protest that we are launching in Bengaluru from August 11 till the order is issued,' said Basavaraj Kowthal, convener of prctest Committee for social justice through internal reservation for scheduled castes.

Ambati Krishna denies funds misuse claims

Former President of Srikakulam District Congress Committee Ambati Krishna Rao on Tuesday alleged that a few people with vested interests made false allegations in regards to funds related to Indira Vignan Bhavan, the Congress Party office in the district. Addressing the media on Tuesday, he said that former Union Minister Killi Kruparani and other leaders have targeted him as he gave Dalit and BC leaders an opportunity to lead the party in several constituencies of the district. Mr. Krishna Rao said: 'During my tenure, the Indira Vignan Bhavan, which owns commercial properties was maintained with the rental income received. This is in accordance to the guidelines of the party. My suspension as a DCC president by the Pradesh Congress Committee is not valid since the All India Congress Committee has to take the final decision after conducting a thorough enquiry.' He added: 'I have been with the Congress Party for the last three decades without any break. Other leaders have left the party after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. I will submit a detailed report to the AICC over the happenings in the district.'
