'Unparalleled talent': Surviving Beach Boys lead tributes to Brian Wilson
THE SURVIVING ORIGINAL members of the Beach Boys have paid tribute to the 'genius' of Brian Wilson
after his death aged 82
.
His cousin Mike Love said Wilson's 'musical gifts were unmatched' while Al Jardine described his bandmate as 'my brother in spirit'.
Wilson was the eldest and last surviving of the three brothers who formed the American rock band with Love and school friend Jardine in 1961.
'The melodies he dreamed up, the emotions he poured into every note – Brian changed the course of music forever,' Love wrote in a lengthy post on Facebook, saying there was 'something otherworldly' about Wilson.
'Like all families, we had our ups and downs. But through it all, we never stopped loving each other, and I never stopped being in awe of what he could do when he sat at a piano or his spontaneity in the studio.'
Describing Wilson as 'fragile, intense, funny' and 'one of a kind', he said his music 'allowed us to show the world what vulnerability and brilliance sound like in harmony'.
'Brian, you once asked 'Wouldn't it be nice if we were older?' Now you are timeless,' he wrote.

Posting a picture of himself with Wilson on Facebook, Jardine said: 'I will always feel blessed that you were in our lives as long as you were'.
'You were a humble giant who always made me laugh and we will celebrate your music forever.'
On Wednesday, Wilson's family said in a
statement
to his website: 'We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away.
'We are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving.'
Elton John posted on Instagram, saying Wilson was 'always so kind to me' and 'the biggest influence on my songwriting ever'.

'He was a musical genius and revolutionary,' he wrote.
'He changed the goalposts when it came to writing songs and changed music forever. A true giant.'
Bob Dylan was among other musicians to pay tribute, the 84-year-old posting on X that he was thinking 'about all the years I've been listening to him and admiring his genius'.
Fellow singer-songwriter Carole King described Wilson as 'my friend and my brother in songwriting' while former Velvet Underground member John Cale said on X he was 'a true musical genius toiling away at melding POP into startling sophistication'.
Heard the sad news about Brian today and thought about all the years I've been listening to him and admiring his genius. Rest in peace dear Brian.

Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood paid tribute to Wilson and US musician Sly Stone, who died earlier this week, in a social media post, saying: 'Oh no Brian Wilson and Sly Stone in one week – my world is in mourning, so sad.'
His bandmate Keith Richards posted an extract of his 2010 memoir, Life, on Instagram recalling hearing The Beach Boys for the first time on the radio and his reaction to their 1966 album Pet Sounds.
The extract reads: 'When we first got to American and to LA, there was a lot of Beach Boys on the radio, which was pretty funny to us – it was before Pet Sounds – it was hot rod songs and surfing songs, pretty lousily played, familiar Chuck Berry licks going on…
'It was later on, listening to Pet Sounds, well, it's a little bit overproduced for me, but Brian Wilson had something.'
Sean Ono Lennon, the son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, described Wilson as 'our American Mozart' in a post on X while The Monkees drummer Micky Dolenz said 'his melodies shaped generations, & his soul resonated in every note'.
Wilson was born on 20 June 1942, and began to play the piano and teach his brothers to sing harmony as a young boy.
The Beach Boys started as a neighbourhood act, rehearsing in Wilson's bedroom and in the garage of their house in suburban Hawthorne, California with Wilson playing bass alongside his brothers Dennis as the drummer and Carl on lead guitar.
The band were managed by the trio's father, Murry Wilson, but by mid-decade he had been displaced and Brian, who had been running the band's recording sessions almost from the start, was in charge.
They released their most recognised album, Pet Sounds, in May 1966 which included the popular songs Wouldn't It Be Nice and God Only Knows.
The Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2001.

Dramatic inside story of Millie Bright's toughest week yet as star quits Euros & dumps fiance…& why she has ‘no regrets'
JUST 18 months ago she was flashing her diamond engagement ring on a sun-soaked holiday in Mauritius, toasting a future with the man she called her 'King'. But today Lioness 6 Millie Bright has pulled out of the Euro 2025 tournament Credit: PA 6 She has also split from her fiance Levi Crew Credit: Instagram It began with her shock withdrawal from the Physically, defender Millie is recovering from knee surgery which saw her miss a date with Prince William yesterday to On a personal level, this week it emerged she's She's also been spotted with a new diamond ring on her little finger - though there's no suggestion it's an engagement ring. Meanwhile all mentions of Levi have been swiftly deleted from But people who know Millie, 31, are not remotely surprised by this single-minded determination to do what's right for her. "Millie is not the type of woman to be troubled by self doubt or regret," said a source, adding that she makes tough decisions, and sticks to them. An onlooker said: 'Millie's had a chaotic few weeks with news of her split and pulling out of the England squad. But she's as tough in real life as she is on the pitch.' It's arguably this ruthless, resilient mentality that has got Millie so far in life - going from earning £25 a week in a Yorkshire pit village to a Up until recently she shared this immaculate home with Levi, whom she was so devoted to that she proudly displayed a tattoo of his eye on her left arm, along with a tiger because 'he gave her core strength through thick and thin'. And the garden boasts an Explore ice bath which she uses for her post game ritual. Millie is thought to have met heavily inked former pro kickboxer and martial arts enthusiast Dave in February. Growing up among the She first sat on a horse when she was one, and was riding by the age of three - insisting that horses were her 'life rather than a hobby'. Determined and dedicated, Millie would rise early and be out working in her family's stable yard by 6am most mornings before school, rain or shine. She competed every weekend, and the owl Millie has tattooed on her arm is a likeness of the one that flew back to her parents barn every year. But suddenly, at the age of nine, she decided to sacrifice it all after stumbling across football by accident. Millie's had a chaotic few weeks with news of her split and pulling out of the England squad. But she's as tough in real life as she is on the pitch Source Bored while watching a friend train one morning at her local club, Killamarsh Dynamos, she decided to join in the session. That was the moment everything changed, and from then on Millie's life revolved around the Dynamos. Millie was such a key player that the club would later name their pitches after her. Inevitably she outgrew the Dynamos and a few years later - dressed as one of the mustachioed runners from the 118 118 directory enquiries service for a charity run - she seized the opportunity to introduce herself to Paul Green, then manager of Doncaster Belles. He recalled that her handshake was so strong that day it took him aback. Unable to refuse her, her contract was quickly a done deal. 'Diamond in the rough' 6 Millie has won 19 trophies with Chelsea F.C. Women Credit: Alamy Another former Doncaster manager, John Buckley, remembers Millie as a diamond in the rough. 'From the minute she came in she was totally involved, a cracking girl,' he said. Back then women's football was not the big business it is today, and her wages were just £25 a week. Undeterred, Millie juggled two part time jobs - working as a fitness instructor and a horse groom at Esberger's Yard in Todwick - to supplement her meagre income. In 2019 she recalled in an interview with the BBC how an ankle injury at that time not only robbed her of her earnings from football, but left her claiming benefits because she could not work her two other jobs either. From the minute she came in she was totally involved, a cracking girl John Buckley Doncaster manager Ever supportive, her parents Nicola and Steve forked out for private surgery and the club paid for her rehabilitation. 'She was always so driven and eventually, she knew what she wanted to do - which was to play professional football,' said Sheila Edmunds, the president of the Doncaster Rovers Belles. A family friend added: 'It was always blood, sweat and tears with Millie, she would play until her entire body hurt.' As her football career grew more demanding in her teens, Millie was forced to make another tough choice. She had to abandon the stables for good - and now Millie is barred from horse riding at all by her insurers. After that of course Millie soared to greater heights and spells in midfield meant she was a direct opponent of England legend Jill Scott, then at Everton. In one press conference Scott said: 'The girl I played against tonight, that young girl - she's the most aggressive player I've ever played against.' Millie's mum and dad were in the stands at every game, along with her no-nonsense grandparents Margaret and Arthur. Arthur Bramall, a tough former coal miner who spent his career at the Rossington colliery in Doncaster, is the person Millie relies on the most for honest feedback about her performance on the pitch. Bitter blow 6 Millie's England teammates have flocked to support her Credit: PA Her decision to withdraw from the Euro 2025 squad as they began preparations for the tournament in Switzerland next month was a bitter blow for fans. Millie admitted: 'The demands of it are incredibly high and I would see it as a little bit selfish to take up an opportunity in a position from somebody else when I'm not 100 per cent there. 'It wasn't an easy decision. I gave it a lot of thought. 'But ultimately, I thought this was the best decision for the team, but also for myself and using this summer to really just zone into mentally, physically, getting myself back in tip-top condition and just happy again, all round, just feeling like myself. It's obviously hard.' Fans have rallied to support Millie on social media, as have her teammates, with England manager While she'll no doubt find it difficult watching her team play on without her, Millie's new love certainly provides a big shoulder to cry on.

Colm O'Regan: You know about crisp sandwiches, but what about 'work biscuits'?
Work biscuit: It sounds like a unicorn $100 billion company that promises an AI platform that will revolutionise how we blah blah. But it's not. Work biscuits are just biscuits that are suitable to store at work. My wife coined it for biscuits that need to be nice enough to give a little bit of a kick but not nice enough to be all eaten in one crumb and regret laden orgy. Now that's a tribute to her wife's self restraint. Regardless of what they are, I will eat my village's entire winter stores of biscuit while standing at the sink, without any memory of ever having eaten them. It gets me thinking about the other things that are surprisingly suitable. Things that fit the moment... Sandwich crisps Like the choice of 'sandwich crisps'. Crisps that are the right flavour and shape to be laid delicately on top of a layer of bread, strong enough to hold their own against the sandwich filling flavour, and not break up into a million pieces. For me it's the Manhattan Cheese And Onion variety in its sleek black packaging. Too strong to binge on them neat but in a sandwich, perfect. They are pub crisps and rarely found in shops unless it's a small shop where the owner knows a fella. Hotel TV What are the programmes you can watch from the bed or listen to from the jacks? It can't be too long. You're there for a stag/hen even though truth be told you'd rather stay in as this is the best chance of doing nothing that you'll get in yonks. But to leave your partner at home and then go away and just sleep is nearly worse than going out and getting balubas. It's an unauthorised change in the contract. For Hotel TV I recommend one episode of an average American procedural cop show like NCIS, one episode of a baffling British quiz show presented by someone who used to be funny, or just inexplicably getting stuck into a documentary on solar power in Botswana on Bloomberg Africa. Colm O'Regan: "They come and go in fashion but the basic denim jacket has a surprisingly suitable trick up its sleeve..." Picture: Chani Anderson Ireland's Own Next up, you're in a waiting room. The TV NOW! magazines are not doing it for you. But peeping out from underneath a GET 100 ABS! men's health magazine, there's an Ireland's Own. You haven't read it in yonks but now you're finding out a surprising fact about Philomena Begley or wondering how amateur detective Miss Flanagan will get to the bottom of this week's mystery (...she was a retired school teacher in it decades ago, so could be well into her eleventies now). Denim jackets They come and go in fashion but the basic denim jacket has a surprisingly suitable trick up its sleeve. Or rather next to its sleeve. The Denim Jacket's Inside Pockets. An anomaly of physics. How a simple jacket that is barely the length of your torso has inside pockets that hold as much as a small van. Scarves, books, cans, shopping, umbrellas, a spare jacket. An underappreciated design classic. Replacements And one final, category of surprisingly suitable are Things You Bought Because Your Forgot Your Own One. These iconic replacements are still around decades later. These are the Michael J Fox in Back to the Future, the Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act. Stars who were not the first choice but turned out to be perfect in a role. Black shoes bought in a hurry in Dunnes 10 minutes before a wedding. That coat that wouldn't normally be you but it helped you out of a hole so you're fond of it. These have all stood the test of time and you've forgotten who they replaced. The Bette Midler (Sister Act) and Eric Stolz (Back to the Future) wardrobe items have long been sent to the charity shop. What's your surprisingly suitable?
