Wisconsin basketball head coach Greg Gard and starting shooting guard John Blackwell shared their reactions to John Tonje being selected with the No. 53 overall pick of the 2025 NBA draft on Thursday. After selecting Rutgers' standout Ace Bailey at No. 5 overall and 2025 NCAA champion Walter Clayton Jr. at No. 18, the Utah Jazz snagged the former Badger late in the second round on Thursday. Shortly afterwards, his former running mate John Blackwell took to social media to share a quick congratulatory tweet: "So proud of you man!" Blackwell wrote. "God is so good! You deserve it [for real]!" Tonje's head coach, who witnessed him seamlessly transition into UW's program as the go-to offensive option during the 2024-25 campaign, also chimed in: "We are so happy for John," Gard told "He's worked for a long time for this moment and has scratched and clawed his way to being an elite player. Utah is going to love what he brings to the organization. He's humble, mature and selfless, along with having a relentless drive to get better every day. He was an absolute joy to coach at Wisconsin and I'm ecstatic to watch his career unfold in the NBA." Throughout Wisconsin's 27-10 campaign, Blackwell and Tonje captained the Badgers to signature wins and a trip to the Big Ten Tournament's title game. In doing so, UW secured a No. 3 seed in the 2025 NCAA Tournament before falling to BYU in a 91-89 thriller. In that contest, Tonje and Blackwell combined for 58 of Wisconsin's 89 points off 16-of-32 shooting from the field, 6-of-16 from 3 and 20-of-23 from the charity stripe. The two were the unquestionable engine of UW's offensive attack. Blackwell would go on to test the NBA waters before withdrawing and returning to college, enabling him to focus on his mission in Madison while uplifting his former teammate and friend to achieve his dreams. While in Madison, Tonje averaged 19.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game while shooting a terrific 46.5% from the field, 39% from 3 and 91% from the free-throw line. That output was enough to net him second-team All-America honors, a first-team All-Big Ten nod and a Naismith Memorial Semifinalist finish. Tonje will now look to make a professional statement when the Utah Jazz begin summer league action from July 5-7 at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. The three-day circuit will also feature the Memphis Grizzlies, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Philadelphia 76ers. Former Tennessee running back's son commits to Vols
Tennessee baseball received a transfer commitment on Thursday. Rice freshman two-way player Blaine Brown announced his commitment to the Vols. He is the son of former Colorado and NFL running back Chris Brown. Chris Brown played for the Buffaloes and head coach Gary Barnett from 2001-02, and was inducted into the CU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021. In 2001, he was part of a Colorado team that upset Texas, 39-37, in the Big 12 championship game. Chris Brown totaled 182 yards and three rushing touchdowns on 33 attempts. Chris Brown returned for his junior season in 2002 and achieved All-America status. He was a runner-up for the Doak Walker Award, which is awarded to the nation's best running back. Following his junior season, Chris Brown entered the 2002 NFL draft and was selected in the third round (No. 93 overall) by Tennessee. Boston Celtics tackle their salary overload; trade two key players
The Boston Celtics are sending Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks as part of a three-team trade also involving the Brooklyn Nets, ESPN reported on Tuesday. Atlanta will receive the 7-foot-2 Porzingis and a second-round draft pick; the Nets get Hawks guard/forward Terance Mann and their No. 22 pick; and the Celtics gained Atlanta forward Georges Niang and a second-rounder, per the report. The oft-injured Kristaps Porzingis, who was set to be paid $30.7 million in 2025-26, was traded by the Celtics on Tuesday night in a three-team deal. The Celtics, who on Monday reportedly sent two-time All-Star guard Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers, will be out of the salary cap's second apron with the trade of the oft-injured Porzingis and save a projected $180 million in tax penalties, ESPN reported. Derailed by injuries, he missed the entire 2018-19 season with a torn ACL and has played fewer than 60 games in six of his last seven campaigns. He missed the start of this past season following offseason ankle surgery. The torn medial retinaculum injury, considered "rare," occurred during the NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks, which the Celtics won in five games. Porzingis averaged 19.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.5 blocks and 28.8 minutes in playing in only 42 regular-season games (all starts) last season. He also played in 11 playoff games (seven starts) and averaged 7.7 points, 4.6 rebounds and 21.0 minutes. For his career, Porzingis averages 19.6 points, 7.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.8 blocks and 30.8 minutes in 501 games (500 starts) for the Knicks (2015-18), Mavericks (2019-22), Washington Wizards (2022-23) and Celtics. Advertisement He earned $29.2 million this season and is due to earn $30.7 million in 2025-26. The Los Angeles Clippers selected Mann in the second round of the 2019 draft. The Clippers traded Mann to the Hawks on Feb. 6. He averaged 9.8 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 22.7 minutes in 30 games (one start) for Atlanta — all improvements over his earlier averages in 37 games (12 starts) for Los Angeles. For his career, Mann, 28, averages 8.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 22.1 minutes in 412 games (169 starts) for the Clippers and Hawks. Georges Niang is reportedly coming to the Celtics as part of the Kristaps Porzingis deal. The Indiana Pacers picked Niang in the second round of the 2016 draft. Niang, who turned 32 on June 17, has averaged 7.4 points, 2.5 rebounds and 17.5 minutes in 544 games (32 starts).
