I swapped London renting for a houseboat — it's a life of extreme highs and lows

In 2022, Kyrie Morris decided enough was enough with the rising cost of London housing. Struggling to pay her £1,300 a month rent, the 33-year-old freelance writer from Middlesbrough used inheritance money to buy a £21,000 narrowboat — and set to work renovating the rundown 'floating shed'. Kyrie's tenancy was about to end, and while she wanted to stay in the city, she found it difficult to find somewhere affordable that would also accept her dog, Snoop. Having often dreamed of canal living, she took the plunge when her granddad passed away and left her some money, opting for the cheapest boat she could find on Facebook Marketplace As it had no running water, toilet, or electricity, Kyrie had to shower at the gym, charge her phone at work, light a fire for warmth, and wear a head torch when it got dark. Until recently, she also didn't have a fridge, and lived off a lot of tinned food, warmed on a gas camping stove. The FCA does not regulate most Buy to Let mortgages. Your home or property may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. 'I would describe it as you get these extreme lows, but the highs are extreme as well,' she says. 'There's a feeling of freedom and adrenaline I've never personally found anywhere else, and I absolutely love it.' Kyrie has now spent roughly £12,000 on doing up the boat, getting solar panels connected to 12-volt batteries for electricity, a diesel heater for hot water and a cassette toilet she empties manually. Although work on the kitchen and bathroom is still ongoing, she has also revamped the flooring, painted throughout, and added a fold-down sofa bed to make the space more comfortable. And despite the fact it's still 'very, very basic', Kyrie's new floating home has allowed her to cut her spending on essentials to around £800 a month — which covers canal licence, insurance and food. It's been far from plain sailing though. Just over a year after she first began cruising the capital's canals, Kyrie felt she 'needed something different', so left her hospitality job and embarked on a 357-mile, seven-week journey from London to Leeds. She planned to settle in Leeds and work on her music and writing, but shortly after she arrived, the boat's engine blew up and it had to stay moored in a marina before being towed to a boatyard in Goole for repairs — forcing Kyrie and Snoop to remain in the East Yorkshire port town for the past six months. To make matters worse, in January 2025, Kyrie accidentally knocked over a candle, sending the curtains up in flames. 'Within 30 seconds, the whole side of my boat was on fire,' she says. 'I got the dog off and… I used the first extinguisher, the whole wall was engulfed at this stage.' After using up two more fire extinguishers and numerous buckets of water, she managed to put the fire out. But while third of the boat was damaged, and the ceiling, woodwork and paintwork had to be replaced, the fire did not hit the electrics, and she didn't lose anything valuable. Kyrie recalls: 'I came out thanking my lucky stars… it messed me up for a little while – when I saw the flames on my stove my heart started to go. More Trending 'I think it must be some kind of PTSD but over time, that's worn away, and I'm alright again now, but I've just got a new mentality about candles.' In spite of the challenges, Kyrie has no plans to go back to a traditional home any time soon. 'I swapped London life for 'freedom' on narrowboat - then it caught fire'

A woman who swapped London renting for narrowboat life with her dog said she has found "freedom", despite her engine exploding and the boat catching fire following a 357-mile journey After years of struggling to make ends meet in London, 33-year-old Kyrie Morris found freedom in one of the most unconventional ways - by swapping high rent and city stress for a rundown narrowboat and a life on the water with her Labrador, Snoop. A freelance writer originally from Middlesbrough, Kyrie was paying £1,600 a month to live in the capital while completing her Master's degree in International Music Marketing and working part-time at The Blues Kitchen in Camden. ‌ Between rent, bills, and day-to-day costs, the pressure was mounting. Often drawn to the tranquillity of London's canals, she'd sit by the water and think, 'Wow, what a life.' ‌ When her grandfather passed away, her grandmother gave her a share of the inheritance. Instead of renewing her tenancy, Kyrie took a leap and bought the cheapest narrowboat she could find on Facebook Marketplace - a £21,000 fixer-upper with no running water, electricity, or toilet. 'When I first bought it, it was essentially a floating shed,' she recalled. She used a gym for showers, charged devices at work, wore a head torch at night, and heated the boat with a log burner. Gradually, she transformed the space - installing solar panels, a diesel heater for hot water, a cassette toilet, and a small kitchen area. For 15 months, Kyrie cruised London's canals, embracing the off-grid lifestyle and documenting her experiences. ‌ Then, in July 2023, reeling from the sudden death of a close friend, she set off on a 357-mile solo journey to Leeds. The trip took seven weeks and passed through Oxford, Coventry, Birmingham, and Lancashire. But just as she reached Leeds in September, her boat's engine failed. The boat was eventually towed to a yard in Goole, where she's been based since, while extensive repairs - including a new engine and propeller - were carried out. ‌ Then, in January 2025, disaster struck again: a candle fell, igniting a curtain and starting a fire onboard. 'Within 30 seconds, the whole side of the boat was on fire,' she said. Armed with extinguishers and buckets of canal water, Kyrie managed to douse the flames before fire services arrived. ‌ A third of the boat was damaged, but luckily, she and Snoop escaped unharmed. Since moving aboard, Kyrie has spent over £12,000 on renovations. Her expenses now hover around £800 a month, significantly lower than her former city lifestyle. In March 2024, she began sharing her journey on TikTok as @canalboatkiz, quickly gaining more than 19,500 followers. One video documenting her trip to Leeds surpassed a million views. Despite the setbacks, Kyrie insists she is happy with boat life. 'There are extreme lows, but the highs are unmatched,' she said. 'There's a sense of freedom and adrenaline I've never experienced anywhere else.'

Art and Wine walk in downtown Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Downtown Sioux Falls is showing off its artistic side. It's a relatively quiet Friday morning as downtown Sioux Falls braces for a busy night with the Spring Art & Wine Walk. Chris Reder resigns from House seat 'Art & Wine Walk is an event that downtown Sioux Falls puts on twice a year. We partner local retailers with local artists and we provide wine for the guests to sip and sample,' DTSF Marketing Manager Jeb Cooper said. The event is free to attend, with a wine punch card available for purchase at many of the 38 participating businesses. 'We generally see the traditional painters, some sculptors, a lot of pottery recently, but there's also live musicians, and there's also some cooking classes,' Cooper said. 'I love getting people into the gallery that don't maybe frequent the arts, but you get to see that little spark,' Rehfelds Modern Fine Art & Framing Gallery Director Alix Kyrie said. Kyrie is the gallery director at Rehfelds, where they're featuring a sculptor from Colorado and a painter from California, but each is originally from South Dakota. It's just a sampling of what the city has to offer. 'It's a really great time of year for arts. We're celebrating the Levitt announcing their season, SculptureWalk's going up, and we have Art & Wine Walk so it's just a great time for us to celebrate the arts downtown,' Kyrie said. The Art & Wine Walk also has an outdoor option, a new initiative called Open Streets, and this month it's on Phillips Avenue between 9th and 10th Streets. 'Downtown Sioux Falls is opening sections of Phillips Avenue on the first Friday of every month through May, June, July, and August to really activate to just activate and really bring the community together and to re-envision what streets could be. They're not just for cars but people as well,' Cooper said. And this month, don't forget the art and wine. The Art & Wine Walk is Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. in downtown Sioux Falls. The wine sampling punch cards are available for purchase at 'Open Streets' or participating businesses. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
