'I swapped London life for 'freedom' on narrowboat - then it caught fire'

Daily Mirror19-05-2025

A woman who swapped London renting for narrowboat life with her dog said she has found "freedom", despite her engine exploding and the boat catching fire following a 357-mile journey
After years of struggling to make ends meet in London, 33-year-old Kyrie Morris found freedom in one of the most unconventional ways - by swapping high rent and city stress for a rundown narrowboat and a life on the water with her Labrador, Snoop.
A freelance writer originally from Middlesbrough, Kyrie was paying £1,600 a month to live in the capital while completing her Master's degree in International Music Marketing and working part-time at The Blues Kitchen in Camden.

Between rent, bills, and day-to-day costs, the pressure was mounting. Often drawn to the tranquillity of London's canals, she'd sit by the water and think, 'Wow, what a life.'

When her grandfather passed away, her grandmother gave her a share of the inheritance. Instead of renewing her tenancy, Kyrie took a leap and bought the cheapest narrowboat she could find on Facebook Marketplace - a £21,000 fixer-upper with no running water, electricity, or toilet.
'When I first bought it, it was essentially a floating shed,' she recalled.
She used a gym for showers, charged devices at work, wore a head torch at night, and heated the boat with a log burner.
Gradually, she transformed the space - installing solar panels, a diesel heater for hot water, a cassette toilet, and a small kitchen area.
For 15 months, Kyrie cruised London's canals, embracing the off-grid lifestyle and documenting her experiences.

Then, in July 2023, reeling from the sudden death of a close friend, she set off on a 357-mile solo journey to Leeds.
The trip took seven weeks and passed through Oxford, Coventry, Birmingham, and Lancashire.
But just as she reached Leeds in September, her boat's engine failed. The boat was eventually towed to a yard in Goole, where she's been based since, while extensive repairs - including a new engine and propeller - were carried out.

Then, in January 2025, disaster struck again: a candle fell, igniting a curtain and starting a fire onboard.
'Within 30 seconds, the whole side of the boat was on fire,' she said. Armed with extinguishers and buckets of canal water, Kyrie managed to douse the flames before fire services arrived.

A third of the boat was damaged, but luckily, she and Snoop escaped unharmed.
Since moving aboard, Kyrie has spent over £12,000 on renovations. Her expenses now hover around £800 a month, significantly lower than her former city lifestyle.
In March 2024, she began sharing her journey on TikTok as @canalboatkiz, quickly gaining more than 19,500 followers. One video documenting her trip to Leeds surpassed a million views.
Despite the setbacks, Kyrie insists she is happy with boat life. 'There are extreme lows, but the highs are unmatched,' she said. 'There's a sense of freedom and adrenaline I've never experienced anywhere else.'

Usually, people order small home accessories or clothes, but one woman decided to take a massive risk and order furniture from Shein. Many people have had issues after ordering from the site, like one woman whose curtains arrived and were just inches long. But it didn't put Shaks off ordering the bed. When it finally arrived, it came in numerous boxes and it was a struggle to assemble. She said: "Okay, so I bought a bed from Shein so you don't have to. "Well, to start off with, it was confusing. The instructions, why? The Shein manufacturer needs to redo them because we had to undo, start again about three, four times." However, once she finally got the hang of the instructions, it was 'alright'. The luxe-looking bed came in beige faux leather and had storage baskets underneath. But that's not all, the headboard had a built-in phone charger as well as LED lights to set the mood. Once it was built and she was able to control the light system, Shaks was left seriously impressed. I bought a Shein sofa - it arrived in a single box & took 72 hours to 'inflate' The Shein buyer had waited to buy a mattress to make sure the bed frame was exactly what she ordered. She added: "I can honestly say you can buy your bed from Shein. "You can soon buy a house and land and car and babies on Shein. "It even comes with LED lights, yeah, go and get your bed, girls and boys." Shak gave viewers an update four months later on how the bedframe held up and she still loved the bargain buy. "It's still standing, it's firm, and it's strong," she added. The clip quickly went viral on her TikTok account @shaks6 with over 20 million views. People couldn't believe the bed worked out and took to the comments to share their surprise. One person wrote: "Buying a bed from Shein is crazy." Another commented: 'The minute SHEIN starts doing overnight shipping… It's over." What is Shein and is it legit? Shein is an online-only fast-fashion retailer, based out of China, that has become a number one shopping destination for many around the world. The company was valued at $66billion in 2023, dwarfing that of popular high street brands Zara and H&M. The fashion retailer was founded in late 2008, by entrepreneur and marketing specialist Xu Yangtian, also known as Chris Xu. Shein is a legitimate selling website and is not a phishing scam. But you may receive a disappointing order or run into shipping issues if you order from the site, according to reviews. There have been swathes of quality complaints, which makes sense when looking at the price tag. "Don't tempt me," penned a third. Meanwhile a fourth said: "I didn't actually think you could buy a legit bed." "I like the fact you're a risk taker lol,' claimed a fifth. Someone else added: 'Crazyyy, I thought it'd be a scam that's better than my bed from The Range."

'I tried the Harrods £160 Japanese mango and was so surprised'

A food reviewer decided to try a Japanese mango from luxury department store Harrods with a hefty price tag and share her thoughts. As we're getting into summer, many people enjoy mangos around this time of year as they are in season A UK vlogger tried a luxury mango from Harrods and has given her verdict. Laura Khoshaba bought the Japanese mango from Harrods which comes in a box of two for £160. The mangoes are not sold separately. Laura posted a video on TikTok to share her thoughts, where she often reviews expensive food products online. In her post, she included a clip of the mangoes on display in the luxury London department store with a sign that states they are 'one of the most sought-after fruits in the world '. They are grown in the Miyazaki prefecture in the south of Japan and are also known as the 'Egg of the Sun.' ‌ The expensive bright red mangoes come in a nice red box with Japanese writing on it and are each wrapped in their own pink packaging. ‌ Laura took one out of the box and her first comment was 'that's heavy' as she held the fruit in her hand. According to Bokksu, a Japanese snack box subscription, each Miyazaki mango weighs at least 350 grams. The food reviewer cut one of the Harrods mangoes into pieces to reveal how it looked inside and juice oozed out of the fruit. She said: 'This looks amazing. This is so juicy.' Before taking a bite, she shared that she was 'so excited.' Laura taste tested the mango and was visibly satisfied as she couldn't help but smile while eating it. There was one thing in particular that impressed her. She added: 'That was so smooth, I barely had to chew it. Wow.' ‌ The foodie even declared: 'That is the best mango I've ever had in my life.' She gave the Japanese mango a ten out of ten rating. She then turned her attention towards the price as she acknowledged: 'I mean £160? It's unreal though.' ‌ Laura described it as 'amazing' and showed how much juice fell onto her hands to emphasise how juicy the mango was. She continued to take bites of the fruit until there was only the skin left and dubbed it the 'best fruit' she has ever had. The display sign above the mangoes in Harrods explains that in order to be called 'Egg of the Sun' mangoes, each fruit has to be grown to the highest standard and pass a 'strict inspection' to make sure the size, colour, shape and sweetness are perfect. ‌ Bokksu claims that it's what's inside that sets these mangoes apart from other types. It elaborates: 'Beneath the vibrant skin lies a vivid golden-yellow flesh that is intensely sweet, juicy, and nearly free of fibre. 'The texture is creamy and smooth - so much so that a bite almost dissolves in your mouth. They're not just mangoes - they're an experience.' Laura's TikTok video has amassed more than 900 comments with viewers having their say on the luxury mangoes. One user, taken back by the price, asked: 'What is this mango made of? £160 for what.' Another added: 'No mango is worth £160, no one can convince me.' However, a third user said it 'looks amazing.'

Kylie Jenner's £4.40 brow gel is worth the hype but watch out for one thing

Kylie Jenner's go-to brow gel costs less than a fiver and has been a staple in my makeup routine for a while now - but there's one slight downside to the product Kylie Jenner 's TikTok account has become a treasure trove for beauty-obsessed fans looking to upgrade their makeup and skincare routines with the latest celebrity-favourite products. From promoting the latest from her own beauty brand Kylie Cosmetics, to sharing exactly how she gets her wavy hairstyle, with the help of her hairstylist, Kylie is sharing all of her beauty tips and tricks on the social media app. But I found that her latest recommendation, the got2b Glued 4 Brows & Edges 2in1 Gel, is a product that's long been a part of my makeup routine - and for good reason too. Kylie showed off her most recent makeup routine in a 'get ready with me' upload, and prepped her brows with the gel, which you can get your hands on for just over a fiver in your local supermarket and your closest Boots or Superdrug store. The gel is practically invisible, vegan friendly, free of silicones and alcohol and is dermatologically tested, so you can trust that your skin won't react badly, despite this product offering a super strong hold for your brows and edges for up to 72 hours. It's made of the same 'Glued' formula that you'll find in got2Be's iconic hairspray, which is often used to keep slick back buns frizz free and even hold wigs in place all day long. Help us improve our content by completing the survey below. We'd love to hear from you! My review of got2b Glued 4 Brows & Edges 2in1 Gel I've been using the got2b Glued 4 Brows & Edges 2in1 Gel for a long while now and I'm currently on my second purchase as it quickly became a staple in my everyday makeup routine. I usually apply the gel before my foundation and allow it to fully dry for brows that won't budge all day long. Not only does the gel last all day, but a little goes a long way, so you can be sure to have this as part of your beauty bag for a long while before you run out and have to repurchase. I haven't used the gel on my edges so I can't speak for their hold there, but for my brows, which can be quite unruly at times, this is the best product to tame and keep them neat. Pros and cons of got2b Glued 4 Brows & Edges 2in1 Gel Pros Super strong hold Quick-drying Hold lasts well over 24hrs Cons Slight flaking if there's excess product left on the skin I've found that a white residue appears if mixed with foundation or SPF Where to buy got2b Glued 4 Brows & Edges 2in1 Gel
