Novak Djokovic's wife replied 'no' after tearful family meeting about retirement

Daily Mirror10-07-2025
Novak Djokovic's tennis career has been littered with incredible highs and crushing lows, with the Serbian legend even coming close to retiring before bouncing back to win 12 more Grand Slam titles
Novak Djokovic came alarmingly close to calling time on his legendary tennis journey before making a stunning resurgence that saw him capture 12 more Grand Slam crowns. Back in 2018, the now 38-year-old had only secured half of his major championships haul, and a combination of recurring injuries and growing frustration with the sport led him to split from his coach at the time, Andre Agassi.
A turning point came when he suffered several surprising defeats, beginning with a fourth-round loss to Hyeon Chung at the Australian Open. That result pushed him to undergo surgery on his elbow, a lingering issue from the previous season.

His return to the circuit was anything but smooth, with early exits including a shocking loss to qualifier Taro Daniel at Indian Wells and a second-round defeat to Benoit Paire in Miami. These discouraging results prompted Djokovic to gather his inner circle - along with his wife, Jelena Djokovic - to announce he was prepared to walk away from the sport.

He later opened up about that crossroads moment in a heartfelt discussion with former Premier League footballer Slaven Bilic on the show 'Failure of the Champion', where he shared how a visit to the Dominican Republic shifted his outlook.
Jelena recounted this emotional chapter in a 2020 conversation with journalist Graham Bensinger, stating: "After that match, he wanted to quit. He gathered all the members of his team and told them, 'You know what, I'm done, I'm quitting.'
"We cried and told him that he couldn't do it, that it wasn't the right time. He didn't want to play tennis, and he didn't even want to see a ball pass in front of him."

Jelena revealed that her husband was so disillusioned, he instructed his then-agent, Edoardo Artaldi, to notify sponsors like Lacoste about his decision to put his career on hold. "It was a terrible loss," she said.
"And then he just, you know, gathered all of us and said, 'You know guys, I'm done.' And I was like, 'What?' And he goes like, 'Yeah.' He said, 'Edoardo, you can speak with my sponsors.

"'I want to be clear with them. I don't know if I'm stopping for six months, a year, or forever. Just tell them if they feel like sticking around they can. If they don't, I'm happy. I just want to make sure everybody is OK with this.'"
But ultimately, it was Jelena and their kids, Stefan and Tara, who reignited his desire to return. "He didn't want to know anything about it," Jelena said. "But I love tennis and I take the kids to the court every day. On the third day, Novak arrived.

"He saw we were having fun, and it wasn't the intense training he was accustomed to for years. Novak asked me if he could play and get a racket, but I refused.
"I started teasing him, saying he had quit and now it was our turn to play tennis. Eventually, he served and felt good, then returned daily until he finally called his coach Marian Vajda to start training again."
His decision to resume playing became one of the greatest comebacks in tennis history, as he added 12 more major titles (and counting) to his resume, reaching a staggering 24 Grand Slams. He's still going after a record-breaking 25th, but has reached just one major final since 2023.
After being knocked out of this year's French Open, Djokovic suggested he may never play at Roland Garros again, with retirement looming. "This could have been the last match I ever played here, so I don't know," he told the fans after his defeat to Jannik Sinner.
"That's why I was a bit more emotional even in the end. But if this was the farewell match of the Roland Garros for me in my career, it was a wonderful one in terms of the atmosphere and what I got from the crowd."
Djokovic is still in the hunt for No. 25, but must beat world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and likely Carlos Alcaraz to do it at Wimbledon this year. He faces Sinner in the last four on Friday, and victory there will set up a final clash against either Alcaraz or Taylor Fritz.

Toffees think City misfit Jack is the Greal deal

Jack Grealish will leave Manchester City this summer after becoming surplus to Pep Guardiola's requirements and his next move could define a career which is in danger of falling way short of what once appeared to be an unlimited ceiling. The Birmingham-born attacking midfielder first hit prominence with boyhood club Aston Villa and nobly stuck with them when they were relegated from the Premier League to help them return to the top flight. He was club captain before moving to City four years ago in a £100million deal which made him the most expensive English player ever, since surpassed by Declan Rice following his switch from West Ham to Arsenal. Despite early indications he was primed to blossom under Guardiola's guidance and playing a key role in their Treble-winning season, jaunty Jack found it increasingly difficult to command a regular position in the starting line-up at the Etihad Stadium and last season he played in just 20 Premier League games, scoring once and providing a solitary assist. Grealish was a notable absentee from the City squad which featured in the Club World Cup and is free to find another club to help him rebuild his career. A return to Villa at 11/4 with bet365 would be the ideal solution while West Ham have been linked with the fallen star, who turns 30 in September, and a move to London's East End is 14/1 with the same firm. Newcastle could use some of the £150m they are expected to rake in from their reluctant sale of Sweden striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool, to potentially appease fans with an eye-catching move for Grealish at the same odds with Ladbrokes and Coral while Tottenham, who were close to signing him before he went to City, could make a move at 20/1 with bet365. They missed out on Morgan Gibbs-White when it appeared they were only a medical away from springing the £60million release clause in his Nottingham Forest contract and Grealish could provide the flair required in their attack. Serie A champions Napoli would love Grealish to ply his undoubted skills in Italy and are 8/1 with bet365 but it is likely he will stay in England although the same odds with the same firm that he remains at City look well wide of the mark. Everton are the market leaders to land the 34-cap England international as they start the new season in their luxurious new home. Toffees manager David Moyes is apparently keen to build his side Grealish, who would relish the opportunity of a free role as he orchestrates play from their midfield. The sticking point for City may be the Toffees' desire to take him on loan but he is currently 2/1 with William Hill, Ladbrokes, Coral and Betfred to be an Everton player next term. Punters will whistling a merry tune and dancing around Glorious Goodwood when Sing Us A Song wins the opener on day two at the festival on the beautiful Sussex course. Ralph Beckett's runner won a decent handicap at Sandown at the end of April but blew his chance of victory on the big stage after making a slow start in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot. A decent exit from the stalls on the South Downs, where he won last September, should see Sing Us A Song emerge triumphant at 5/2 with bet365. Jabaara was first home in the Oak Tree Stakes 12 months ago but lost his place due to interference and the Musselburgh winner two races ago can be a major player this time around at 11/2 with William Hill while Dickensian is quicker than Oliver Twist in the race for second helpings and can be first past the post in the Molecomb five furlong dash at 8/1 with bet365. More Trending Irish 200 Guineas and St James Palace Stakes, Royal Ascot winner Field of Gold is the heavy odds-on favourite to win the Sussex Stakes. But in the week Happy Gilmore 2 is released it would be fitting if Carl Spackler, named after the crazy groundsman played by Bill Murray in the superior Caddyshack, ran strongly. Twice triumphant at Keeneland and once at Saratoga in the United States before moving to his current yard in Australia, he ran too freely in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot but should do much better here and is nailed on at 18/4 to finish in the top four with bet365. Joao Felix reunites with Cristiano Ronaldo following Chelsea exit

Joao Felix has completed a permanent transfer from Chelsea to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr. The 25-year-old Portugal international had two previous spells at Stamford Bridge, including a loan in 2023 and a permanent move last summer. During his most recent stint, Felix made 20 appearances for Chelsea, starting only three Premier League games, before a loan to AC Milan in January. Al-Nassr reportedly paid an initial transfer fee of £26 million for Felix, which could increase to £43 million with add-ons. Felix has signed a two-year contract and will join his Portugal team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo at the Saudi club.

Andy Robertson fires brutal X-rated training rant at Liverpool kid as Scotland skipper shows off his cheeky side

The veteran defender was heard giving 16-year-old academy star Rio Ngumoha a dressing down during a training exercise Scotland captain Andy Robertson appeared to let his competitive streak get the better of him by slating a Liverpool team-mate in an X-rated training ground rant. ‌ Arne Slot 's side are gearing up for the defence of their Premier League title with a tour of Asia and will take on J1 League outfit Yokohama Marinos on Wednesday after losing 4-2 to AC Milan last weekend. ‌ And ahead of the game, Robertson - who is into the final 12 months of his contract at Anfield - could be heard giving 16-year-old starlet Rio Ngumoha a stern telling off during a training exercise. ‌ In footage shared on X by The Redmen TV, the teenager appeared to lose the ball, promoting Robertson, 31, to bellow: "Ah Rio, f****** complacency ya wee d***". The rant was clearly in jest, with the Tartan Army hero recently talking up his younger teammate. ‌ Ngumoha became the youngest ever player to start a game for Liverpool when he lined-up in an FA Cup clash against Accrington Stanley back in January and former Dundee United and Queen's Park full-back Robertson has predicted a big future in the game for the England youth international. Speaking about Ngumoha and fellow prospect Trey Nyoni in an interview with The Anfield Wrap, he said: "He's a good kid and he's got a fantastic head on his shoulders, especially when he's got people like Mo [Salah] who can help him so much as well. "We always try to help him and Trey. ‌ "They're so young but they're such good kids and they've got a hell of a future ahead of themselves. "You can just see them coming on every time and the more they train and play with us, the more they just get better and better. ‌ "Obviously that's the last two games I've played now with Rio in front of me and he just keeps on coming on. "He's got a hell of a future ahead of him but the here-and-now looks pretty good as well."
