American Airlines' Latest Move Is Bad News for Summer Travelers

We're just a couple of months away from the busy summer travel season, which will have thousands of people jetting off on highly-anticipated vacations. And if you happen to be flying on American Airlines for an upcoming trip? You'll want to be aware of one of the latest changes they just made, which will likely have an impact on people's summer plans.
According to Gary Leff for View From the Wing, the airline plans on cutting back on their airport customer service hours, which is presumably an effort to cut back on overhead by reducing staff hours.
So if you happen to be on a layover and your flight is canceled, and it doesn't happen during those new customer service hours? Be prepared to wait on hold for an indefinite amount of time with their phone customer service reps.The cutbacks are as follows:
He notes that, "The Chicago O'Hare Customer Service Center is currently open 6 a.m. – 11 p.m. But on the upcoming employee summer shift bid, service center shifts prior to 2 p.m. have been eliminated."
Based on that information, it sounds like travelers won't be able to get live customer service help during the busy morning hours, which would be incredibly inconvenient in the case of a missed connection or canceled flight. Leff also adds that customer service usually ramps up their hours in summer, so doing the opposite could have even more of a negative impact.
Air travel is stressful enough these days without additional headaches, so if American continues to cut back on customer service, the airline is going to wind up with plenty of unhappy fliers, which is the last thing it needs.

American Airlines' first nonstop flight between Miami International Airport and Rome's Fiumicino Airport is scheduled to depart MIA at 7:45 p.m. June 5. The roughly 10-hour trip will be aboard a Boeing 777-200 aircraft. The airline will run daily service. The flight was originally planned to start in July, but increased demand pushed up the date. Miami to Europe Rome becomes the fifth city in Europe with direct flights with MIA on American Airlines. The others are Madrid, Barcelona, Paris and London. The flight to Charles de Gaulle Airport operates during the winter. 'We are strengthening our service to Europe,' Juan Carlos Liscano, the airline's vice president of MIA operations, said in an email to the Miami Herald. Other carriers fly between MIA and Italy. British Airways and Lufthansa have direct flights to Rome although not every day. Condor has service four times a week. American Airlines and MIA As MIA's largest airline, American is betting on the airport's continued growth. 'American Airlines continues to double down on Miami,' Liscano said. The carrier, which says it has about 15,000 employees based at MIA, is flying its largest summer schedule ever out of Florida's second busiest airport, and for the second straight year. Between May 16 and Sept. 2, American will operate more than 37,200 flights from MIA, about 336 per day. That's an increase of 3% in flights compared to the same period in 2024. The number of flights is also expected to grow next year with American the official North American Supplier of the FIFA World Cup and with Miami is one of the host cities. The survey of 2,000 American parents with children under the age of 13 asked respondents about the best — and worst — ages to go on a road trip with their children. When asked why this was the worst age, parents' top reason was because their little one gets bored easily (46%). Others said this was the worst age because their 3-and-a-half-year-old will throw a tantrum in the car (39%) and they don't enjoy road tripping at this age (31%). 5 The survey found that while 3 and a half was pinpointed as the most difficult to road trip with, age 6 was found to be the easiest. British journalist Christiane Amanpour said she treats travel to the U.S. under President Donald Trump 'as if I was going to North Korea.' The longtime CNN correspondent talked about her experience flying to the U.S. on her podcast, 'The Ex Files.' 'I must say I was afraid,' Amanpour told her co-host and ex-husband, Jamie Rubin, on Wednesday's episode. Amanpour was traveling to the U.S. last week to give a speech at Harvard University, which has come under increased attacks by Trump, including revoking the university's ability to enroll international students. Trump has also ramped up his attacks on immigrants, using agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to snatch people off the streets and imprison them without due process. And on Thursday, Trump announced that citizens of 12 countries would be banned from visiting the U.S. and seven others that would face restrictions. 'I'm a foreigner,' Amanpour said. 'I don't have a green card. I'm not an American citizen. I'm fairly prominent, and I literally prepared to go to America as if I was going to North Korea. I took a burner phone, Jamie. Imagine that. I didn't take a single … not my mobile phone, not my iPad, nothing, and I had nothing on the burner phone except a few numbers.' Amanpour said she also spoke to CNN security about what precautions to take. 'I've heard that many, including British citizens, have been stopped at the border and been questioned for hours and hours and hours,' she said. Thankfully, Amanpour said she went through airport security without any issues. 'I was welcomed,' she said. 'The immigration officer at Boston, where I came in, could not have been nicer. Huge sigh of relief I breathed.'
