Gamers line up for Nintendo Switch 2 on launch day

CNAa day ago

TOKYO :Gaming fans queued up for the launch of Nintendo's Switch 2 on Thursday amid pent-up demand for the more powerful next-generation gaming device.
"The level of demand seems to be sky-high," said Serkan Toto, founder of the Kantan Games consultancy.
In the Ikebukuro shopping district of Tokyo, dozens of successful applicants to a sales lottery by electronics retailer Bic Camera lined up before the store opened to collect their devices.
"I feel like I'm going to cry," Yumi Ohi, a 30-year-old delivery contractor, told Reuters.
Ohi had missed out in other lotteries and had come from Saitama prefecture, adjacent to Tokyo, to receive her Switch 2.
Nintendo has sold 152 million Switch home-portable devices since launching in 2017. It became a games juggernaut with titles including two "The Legend of Zelda" titles and COVID-19 pandemic breakout hit "Animal Crossing: New Horizons".
The Switch 2 bears many similarities with its predecessor but offers a larger screen and improved graphics and debuts with titles including "Mario Kart World".
"The much larger audience of Switch users should translate to stronger adoption in the opening part of its lifecycle," said Piers Harding-Rolls, an analyst at Ampere Analysis.
"Nintendo is better prepared this time around" to deal with the high demand, he said.
The launch of the $499.99 Switch 2 is a test of Nintendo's supply chain management during U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war.
Nintendo last month forecast sales of 15 million Switch 2 units during the current financial year, as well as 4.5 million Switch units.
President Shuntaro Furukawa said Nintendo will strengthen production capacity to respond to strong demand and focus on sales promotion in an effort to exceed the forecast.
"Given it's a special occasion, I wanted to buy (the Switch 2) right away on its release date," said Shinichi Sekiguchi, a hotel receptionist in his thirties.
Nintendo said it received 2.2 million applications for its Switch 2 sales lottery on its My Nintendo Store in Japan. Pre-orders at Target sold out in less than two hours.
"You are looking at weeks or months until you can walk into a store and buy a Switch 2," said Toto of Kantan Games.
Investor expectations for the new device are similarly lofty.
Nintendo's shares, which closed down 2 per cent in Tokyo, have gained 28 per cent this year.
Concerns include whether momentum for the Switch 2 will be sustained after hardcore gamers have upgraded.
"The volume of first-party games on offer at launch isn't as strong as it could be, so some more casual users may wait and see how the games available build over the next one to two years before making the leap," said Ampere's Harding-Rolls.
Ampere forecasts Switch 2 sales to exceed 100 million units in 2030.
"Mario Kart World" has a U.S. sticker price of $79.99, generating debate over the price of games. Nintendo is also attracting third-party titles to the system.
"I've been around since the era of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and games from (that period) were expensive too so I think it's somewhat within the acceptable range," said Akitomo Takahashi, a salesman in his forties.

Aeon Financial says its M&A deal with Vietnam's SeABank is invalid

TOKYO :Aeon Financial Service said on Friday that its deal to buy a financial company owned by Vietnam's Southeast Asia Commercial Joint Stock Bank was invalid due to "inappropriate accounting transactions." The Japanese financial services company, a subsidiary of the Aeon retail group, in February completed the acquisition of Post and Telecommunication Finance, a non-banking credit organisation, from SeABank for about 26.2 billion yen ($181.81 million). But the Japanese company later found that accounting information disclosed before the agreement "significantly diverged from reality," it said in a statement. SeABank did not immediately reply to a request for comment. Aeon Financial said it will seek to invalidate the equity transfer agreement, and wants to recoup expenses incurred in concluding the equity transfer agreement. ($1 = 144.1100 yen)

Japan allows longer nuclear plant lifespans

TOKYO: A law allowing nuclear reactors to operate beyond 60 years took effect in Japan on Friday (Jun 6), as the government turns back to atomic energy 14 years after the Fukushima catastrophe. The world's fourth-largest economy is targeting carbon neutrality by 2050 but remains heavily reliant on fossil fuels - partly because many nuclear reactors were taken offline after the 2011 Fukushima meltdown. The government now plans to increase its reliance on nuclear power, in part to help meet growing energy demand from artificial intelligence and microchip factories. The 60-year limit was brought in after the 2011 disaster, which was triggered by a devastating earthquake and tsunami in northeast Japan. Under the amended law, nuclear plants' operating period may be extended beyond 60 years - in a system similar to extra time in football games - to compensate for stoppages caused by "unforeseeable circumstances", the government says. This means, for example, that one reactor in central Japan's Fukui region, suspended for 12 years after the Fukushima crisis, will now be able to operate up until 2047 - 72 years after its debut, the Asahi Shimbun daily reported. But operators require approval from Japan's nuclear safety watchdog for the exemption. The law also includes measures intended to strengthen safety checks at ageing reactors. The legal revision is also aimed at helping Japan better cope with power crunches, after Russia's invasion of Ukraine sparked energy market turmoil. Japan's Strategic Energy Plan had previously vowed to "reduce reliance on nuclear power as much as possible". But this pledge was dropped from the latest version approved in February, which includes an intention to make renewables the country's top power source by 2040. Under the plan, nuclear power will account for around 20 per cent of Japan's energy supply by 2040 - up from 5.6 per cent in 2022. Also in February, Japan pledged to slash greenhouse gas emissions by 60 per cent in the next decade from 2013 levels, a target decried by campaigners as far short of what was needed under the Paris Agreement to limit global warming. Japan is the world's fifth-largest single-country emitter of carbon dioxide after China, the United States, India and Russia.

Hong Kong shareholder Oasis to push Toyota Motor to raise bid for Toyota Industries

TOKYO :Hong Kong-based Oasis Management, a shareholder in both Toyota Motor and Toyota Industries, will push for the Japanese automaker to make a higher offer to take Toyota Industries private, its chief investment officer Seth Fisher said on Friday. Toyota Motor announced its plan for the $33 billion take-private offer on Wednesday, sending Toyota Industries' shares down 12 per cent the following day as market participants regarded the deal as undervaluing the subsidiary. The complex 4.7 trillion yen ($33 billion) transaction includes an offer price of 16,300 yen per share for Toyota Industries. While that represents a 23 per cent premium to the price before word of a deal broke in April, it is well below Toyota Industries' share price of 18,400 yen before the offer was formally announced. Shares in Toyota Industries closed up 0.86 per cent at 16,400 yen on Friday.
