
KFC £1.5 billion investment to open 500 new restaurants across UK
KFC has announced plans to invest nearly £1.5 billion into its UK and Ireland chain by opening 500 more restaurants in the next ten years, as it said demand for fried chicken is stronger than it's ever been. The fast-food giant said the expansion is expected to create 7,000 new jobs. KFC's plans form part of new growth ambitions as the chain looks to expand its reach across the nation and put money into its existing locations.
It is set to spend about £466 million on opening new restaurants, with a focus on building flagship sites and drive-thrus in places like Ireland and the North West of England where it can tap into growing demand. The cash will also go toward upgrading more than 200 existing restaurants, representing about a fifth of its entire chain, with a new design and the latest digital features. KFC says on its website that it is offering up to a £20,000 'finder's fee' to landlords and property experts who introduce a site it can build on.
The expansion will result in about 7,000 new jobs being created across the UK and Ireland business and its supply chain, over the next five years, according to the group. This will include jobs in restaurants and as managers, kitchen-based jobs, and a newly-created 'guest experience' role across the chain. It currently has more than 1,000 restaurants in the UK and Ireland and hires about 30,000 staff. Investment is also earmarked for KFC's suppliers, including spending on fresh chicken, gravy, and salads. Rob Swain, KFC UK and Ireland's general manager, said: 'We've been serving customers in the UK for 60 years now, but we've never seen such strong demand for freshly prepared, fried chicken as we're seeing today.'
He added that the company was 'doubling down' on its commitment to the UK and Ireland with its £1.49 billion total investment. The new fried chicken branches will be competing with the likes of McDonald's, Morley's, Chicken Cottage and Popeyes. Last year, MailOnline revealed how Britain's highstreets were becoming overrun with fried chicken joints.
In south London, a single stretch of road has a staggering 29 fried chicken shops, making it the biggest street in the UK for the fast food item. McDonald's is the largest US chain selling fried chicken in the UK, with 1,442 stores opened since it came over from America in 1974.
This is closely followed by KFC, which has 1,040 branches in the UK and came over even earlier in 1965. With a staggering 12 fried chicken shops within a stretch of just under two miles, Streatham High Road is home to almost every famous chicken shop brand, from Morley's to Chicken Cottage. And if you were to continue straight down the connecting London Road through to West Croydon, you would be able to spot a further 17 shops selling the fried goods. In short, this means you will pass a shocking 29 fried chicken shops on the single stretch of road from Streatham Hill to West Croydon without turning left or right, according to the Local Data Company. And that is without accounting for the dozens more chicken shops that lay just off the main road.
Since its first store was founded in Sydenham by Sri Lankan Tamil immigrant Kannalingam Selvendran in 1985, the Morley's brand has grown to become one of the most well-known, with nearly 100 branches across London. The demand for fried chicken has likely also grown with the influence of social media personalities and celebrity endorsements. Sidemen, the YouTube group popular among teens, sent fans into a frenzy when they opened their own fried chicken chain Sides in 2021.
And Amelia Dimoldenburg's wildly successful Chicken Shop Date series, where she dines with celebrities at local fried chicken shops, is bound to have furthered demand for the already popular fast-food.
Among the run of famous faces who have featured in her series - which began with her interviewing up-and-coming grime artists back in 2014- include Billie Eilish, Daniel Kaluuya, and most recently A-listers Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. The Deadpool & Wolverine stars also recently featured on US YouTube talk show Hot Ones with host Sean Evans, where guests answer questions as they eat spicy chicken wings.

THE 1% Club left contestants scratching their heads after a devilishly tricky maths question saw just 13 players pass just to make it through. The hit ITV quiz show, fronted by funnyman Lee Mack, threw in a numbers puzzle that had the players panicking. 5 5 Instead of testing players on their general knowledge, 100 contestants try their luck at solving riddles within 30 seconds. On The 1% Club, they are whittled down round by round as they are tasked with using their logic, reasoning skills, and common sense. With every player that gets eliminated, £1,000 gets added to the prize pot as the players try to answer questions that certain percentages of the public would get right. The players that remain at the end will fight to win a potentially huge jackpot prize and a chance at joining the prestigious one percent club. But the the 35% question saw a whopping 13 players use their pass. Lee showed a picture of a coloured pie chart with numbers and asked: "What number replaces the question mark when you read it clockwise from the start?" The remaining players faces looked puzzled as they tried to figure out the answer within the 30 seconds. Lee then revealed the right answer was 27 as they alternate segments reveal consecutive multiples of three and 27 is the next number in the three times table. Lee was stunned to see that a massive 13 players used their pass to get through to the next round. The episode also saw an 'easy' common sense riddle knock out 23 people earlier on in the show. Hampshire firefighting twins retire after 68 years of service
Identical twin brothers are retiring from the fire service with "incredible memories" after a combined 68 years of on-call and Paul Minall were presented with certificates by chief fire officer Neil Odin at Whitchurch Fire Station, in Hampshire, during drill night on who is a crew manager at the station, joined in May 1990, with his brother coming on board two years later, after initially failing to meet the height said he had "thoroughly enjoyed" the work and had witnessed "a great deal of change for the better over the years". Birmingham skateboarders hope to inspire future Olympians
A group of skateboarding enthusiasts are hoping a festival this weekend could uncover the Olympic skateboarders of the from Birmingham Skate Spaces (BSS), a community interest community (CIC), are taking part in the tenth B-Side Hip-Hop Festival on is the group's first appearance at the festival - but director Berni Good says it makes perfect sense."Skateboarding, and graffiti, and hip-hop, all kind of sit side by side with each other," she explained. Organised by the Birmingham Hippodrome and other creative groups, the festival includes graffiti classes, dance battles, basketball and music. The centrepiece of BSS' stand is a mini ramp, which has been built specially for the is modular, meaning it can be taken apart and set up elsewhere for future construction was funded by a grant from the governement's Shared Prosperity Fund and used as an opportunity to mentor 10 young people, who helped build it."So these young people who weren't necessarily in employment, education or training came along... and we equipped them with skills that they could then [use to] go out and seek employment," said Ms Good. BSS says on its website it aims to improve "the wellbeing, cultural prosperity and health of Birmingham by building outdoor and indoor skateparks".Ms Good said skateboarding was also effective at allowing young people to feel part of a community and giving them a safe space in which to skate part at Bournbrook - which two years ago was saved from closure - was built entirely by volunteers."When you put your blood, sweat and tears into something, you have more of a sense of ownership of it," said Ms Good. "You're learning the skill, but you are also owning and being part of a community." On Saturday, the mini ramp will be set up outside the Hippodrome, where coaches from Skateboard GB will be giving free lessons - with all equipment provided - before professional skateboarders put on a Good cites Bombette Martin - the first skateboarder to compete in the Olympics, and who grew up partly in Birmingham - as an example of what can be achieved by young people."It's all about inspiring people to get on the board, show them how to do it and give them the ability to participate in this wonderful sport - that is now in the Olympics," she said."There's no reason why we can't have some Brummies rocking up at the Olympics in the future."
