Stoke-on-Trent community stalwarts honoured with freedom of city
Port Vale Football Club and the club's chair and co-owner, Carol Shanahan, are set to be awarded the freedom of Stoke-on-Trent.The announcement comes as the club prepares to celebrate its 150th anniversary and the city celebrates 100 years since it was federated.A number of other significant figures will also be recognised, including billionaire Bet365 co-founders Denise and Peter Coates, and former Stoke-on-Trent North MP Joan Walley.A ceremony is set to take place on Thursday to confer the honours.
Freedom of the city is the top honour the council can bestow on people in recognition of their contribution.Other recipients on Thursday include the lord-lieutenant of Staffordshire Sir Ian Dudson, businessman John Goodwin, historian Fred Hughes, businessman Mo Iqbal and music promoter Mike Lloyd.A spokesperson for Port Vale Football Club said the honour was testament to Ms Shanahan's impact on Burslem and wider city in the six years since taking over the club.The award for the club itself recognised its history and commitment to community engagement through the Port Vale Foundation, they added.
'Genuinely touched'
Port Vale chief executive, Matt Hancock said: "This is a truly special moment for everyone connected to Port Vale and I am extremely proud to be accepting this honour on behalf of the club."Stoke-on-Trent was granted city status on 5 June 1925 by King George V.Ms Shanahan said the city meant "the world" to her."I'm genuinely touched and a little bit overwhelmed to be receiving this honour, both for myself and on behalf of everyone at the football club," she said.She added that to receive the individual honour while the club was also recognised made it even more special."Everything we do at Port Vale is rooted in our commitment to this community. I'm so proud of what we've achieved together so far and even more excited for what's still to come."

Sky News understands that the Trump administration approached the UK government to ask if it would host round two of the US-China trade talks. This is a useful 'diplo-win' for the UK. The first round was held in Geneva last month. News of that happening came as a surprise. The Chinese and the Americans were in the midst of a Trump-instigated trade war. President Trump was en route to Saudi Arabia and suddenly we got word of talks in Switzerland. They went surprisingly well. US treasury secretary Scott Bessent and his Chinese counterpart He Lifeng, met face-to-face and agreed to suspend most tariffs for 90 days. But two weeks later, the Trump administration accused Beijing of breaking the agreements reached in Geneva. Beijing threw the blame back at Washington. On Wednesday, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping spoke by phone. The Chinese claimed this call was at the Americans' request. Either way, the consequence was that the talks were back on track. "I just concluded a very good phone call with President Xi of China, discussing some of the intricacies of our recently made, and agreed to, trade deal," President Trump said this week. From that call came the impetus for a second round of talks. A venue was needed. In stepped the UK at short notice. Beyond being geographically convenient, UK government sources suggest that Britain is geopolitically in the right place right now to act as this bridge and facilitator. The UK-China relationship is in the process of a "reset". Other locations, like Brussels or other EU capitals, would have been less workable. Crucially too, for the UK, this is also potentially advantageous as it seeks to get its own UK-US trade agreement, to eliminate or massively reduce tariffs, over the line. 5:08 Talks on reaching the "implementation phase" have been near-continuous since the announcement last month, but having the American principals in London is a plus. Sideline talks are possible, but even the presence of the US team in the UK is helpful. For all the chaos that President Trump is causing with his tariffs, he has instigated face-to-face conversations as he seeks resets. Key players are sitting down around tables - yes, to untangle the trade knots which Trump tied, but this whole episode has pulled foes together around the same table; it has forced relationships and maybe mutual understanding. That's useful. And for this next round, between superpowers, the UK is the host. Also useful.

Watkins out of England's games against Andorra, Senegal with injury
June 7 (Reuters) - England striker Ollie Watkins will miss the side's matches against Andorra and Senegal after withdrawing due to a minor injury, the England team said. The 29-year-old, who scored 17 goals and provided 14 assists in 54 appearances in all competitions for Aston Villa in the recently concluded season, has been capped 18 times for England, netting five times. With Watkins' withdrawal, captain Harry Kane and Ivan Toney remain England manager Thomas Tuchel's striker options for their two upcoming games.
