Mangaluru: Veteran Yakshagana artiste Patala Venkataramana Bhat passed away on Saturday due to a heart attack at his house, 'Patala', in Uppinangady. He was 92. He is survived by two sons and four daughters.
His son, Ambaprasad Patala, is a renowned 'streeveshadhari' (female character) in Yakshagana.
Born on Nov 16, 1933, in Baipadavu near Puttur to Rama Bhatta and Hemavati, he studied only up to the eighth grade. He then completed his training in the Badaguthittu style of Yakshagana under Seetharam of the Soukoor Mela and the Thenkuthittu under Peruvodi Narayana Bhat. He further honed his skills under Kadaru Narayana Bhat and Alike Ramayya Rai.
After serving as an artiste in many troupes, he joined the Dharmasthala Mela in 1963 as a 'streeveshadhari' during the tenure of the late Dharmadhikari Ratnavarma Heggade. He retired after 18 years of service and lived in his house near Hirembadi in Uppinangady post-retirement.
He portrayed roles such as Ammu Ballalthi in 'Dharmasthala Kshetra Mahatme' prasanga, Mohini in 'Bhasmasura Mohini', Rambha, Urvashi, Menaka, Shurpanakha, Ambe, Putani, Draupadi, and Devi, earning the title 'Natya Rani Shantale.' He was honoured with prestigious awards by various organisations, including the state award.
Yakshagana patrons, including Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggade, expressed deep condolences on his death.

Rishab Shetty's film won National Award Rishab Shetty directed two Kannada films 'Ricky' and 'Kirik Party' in 2016, out of which Kirik Party was a superhit. At the same time, 'Koduge: Ramanna Rao' made under his direction won the National Award for Best Children's Film and 'Kantara' released in 2022 made Rishab Shetty's name famous all over the world. Kantara was released pan India on public demand and it collected 407 crores worldwide. Mangaluru: Noted Yakshagana artiste Siddakatte Sadashiva Shettigar, who maintained a distinctive presence in the Thenkuthittu Yakshagana stage for five decades, passed away on Sunday. He was 59. Born on Dec 17, 1965, in Siddakatte, Bantwal taluk, to Babu Shettigar and Giriyamma, Sadashiva Shettigar developed an interest in Yakshagana during his childhood and began his artistic journey at the age of 18 as an artiste with the Kateel troupe. He later honed his skills in makeup and acting, studying deeply alongside senior artistes such as Bannada Mahalinga, Renjala Ramakrishna Rao, Sunnambala Vishweshwara Bhat, Ira Gopalakrishna Bhagavata, and Bellare Manjunatha Bhat. The characters he portrayed were enriched with profound internal experiences. Mythical villains like Ravana, Kumbhakarna, Mahishasura, Simha, Varaha, and Gajendra, as well as female characters like Ajmukha, Putani, Shurpanakha, and Pratrajvale, came to life through his artistry. His portrayal of the character Kakasura in the episode 'Shri Rama Karunya' was noted for its rare theatricality and depth of inner world. He toured with Yakshagana troupes including Kateel Mela, Dharmasthala Mela, Hosanagara Mela, Edaneeru Mela, and Hanumagiri Mela for approximately 42 years before officially retiring in 2025. Sadashiva Shettigar leaves behind a wife, two sons, and a daughter.
