Mets bolster bullpen again, acquire Tyler Rogers from Giants for Buttó and 2 others

NEW YORK (AP) — The busy New York Mets made another trade Wednesday to strengthen their injury-depleted bullpen, acquiring right-hander Tyler Rogers from the fading San Francisco Giants for three players.
New York sent pitchers José Buttó and Blade Tidwell to the Giants, along with minor league outfield prospect Drew Gilbert. Tidwell was at Triple-A Syracuse after making two starts and two relief appearances for the Mets this season.
The deal came on the same day
Rogers' twin brother Taylor was also traded,
from Cincinnati to Pittsburgh in the three-player swap that moved Gold Glove third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes to the Reds.
Tyler Rogers is 4-3 with a 1.80 ERA this season, using his drastic submarine delivery to great effect. The 34-year-old reliever has struck out 38 batters and walked only four in 50 innings, tying for the major league lead with 53 appearances.
He should give Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, in need of dependable bullpen options, another experienced arm to help set up All-Star closer Edwin Díaz.
New York obtained left-hander Gregory Soto,
a two-time All-Star, in a trade with Baltimore last Friday and entered Wednesday with a half-game lead in the NL East over rival Philadelphia.
Tyler Rogers, who can become a free agent following the World Series, is 26-20 with a 2.79 ERA and 19 saves in seven major league seasons — all with the Giants.

Rookie Nolan McLean excited to join Mets and help struggling rotation

NEW YORK (AP) — Nolan McLean finished a bullpen session on Wednesday in Syracuse when he got a message from pitching coach A.J. Sager, saying he was joining the New York Mets. Two days later, he was in New York preparing to make his major league debut on Saturday and hoping to help a struggling rotation during a playoff race. 'I think it was a surprise,' McLean said before the Mets opened a three-game series against Seattle on Friday. 'I was trying to do my best to stay in the moment and be with Syracuse as much as I could." McLean is joining a rotation that began Friday with a 5.31 ERA in the last 52 games, 25th amongst the 30 teams. Overall, the Mets have a 3.77 ERA from their rotation, but they began Friday with 33 losses in the last 52 games. McLean, 24, was 8-5 with a 2.45 ERA in 21 games, including 18 starts, between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse. He struck out 127 batters in 113 2/3 innings and displayed a five-pitch arsenal that includes a mid-to-high 90s fastball as well as a sweeper that's been clocked in the mid-80s. 'I think just the ability to throw strikes with most of my pitches in any count," McLean, who held hitters to a .185 average in Triple-A, said of his strengths. "Wasn't scared to flip sliders in there, behind counts, early in counts. Whatever it might have been.' McLean, who played for Oklahoma State, is the first member of the Mets' 2023 draft class to reach the majors. He is replacing Frankie Montas, who was sent to the bullpen Tuesday after going 3-2 with a 6.38 ERA in his first eight games, including seven starts. 'It's a dream come true. I remember telling my dad when I was really little, seeing some big leaguers play,' McLean said. McLean has thrown at least six innings in nine starts this season. He reached at least 90 pitches seven times, most recently on Aug. 5. 'Obviously he earned it,' Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'Worked really hard. Credit to him, people in player development. He's a big league pitcher.' ___ AP MLB:

2026 NFL draft: Todd McShay mocks nation's top tackle to New York Giants

The 2025 season doesn't start for a few more weeks, but we've already seen a fair share of "way too early" mock drafts. Now that we've seen a little bit of each NFL team through the first preseason games, draft analyst Toddy McShay released his "appropriately early" mock draft. He and Steve Muench co-host The McShay Show podcast and worked together to scout players that teams might actually draft, rather than shooting in the dark. Based on FanDuel's Super Bowl odds, the Giants are projected to have the third overall pick. With that pick, McShay and Muench predict that the Giants will select offensive tackle Spencer Fano out of Utah. "I think that offensive line's got a chance to be a lot better than people expect. Marcus Mbow they drafted (this year), by the way, Marcus Mbow is having a good camp. That's 'our guy' from Purdue, I think he gets a little stronger and there's something there," McShay said. McShay goes through the top five picks in his mock before getting Muench's opinion on his selections. Muench is very high on Fano. "Violent, athletic, it's not all clean," Muench said. "It's not all clean. But that gives you is the opportunity to see what happens when he gets caught in a bad spot. I remember watching when the Jets took Alijah Vera Tucker out of USC. I remember Joe Douglas, who was the GM of the Jets at the time, talking about 'what happens when Vera Tucker gets caught out of position, how does he recover?' And they were so impressed with his ability to recover. "Man, I see Fano, and when he's clean with his technique, it is beautiful, but when he does things that he's not supposed to, he still wins. And when you're looking at that kind of a talent, I would have no problem taking him in the Top 5.' The Giants' offensive line has struggled over the last few years, but it does seem to be coming together this year. However, aside from John Michael Schmitz, all of the starting offensive linemen have been in the league for a minimum of five years. There's not a ton of youth behind them, either, and Fano could easily slide into the rotation should the Giants actually draft him.
