PARIS - Carlos Alcaraz continued his French Open title defence with a display of breathtaking brutality for a 6-0 6-1 6-4 victory over American 12th seed Tommy Paul and a spot in the Roland Garros semi-finals on Tuesday.
The second seed has searched in vain for his usual sublime form on Parisian clay this year, needing four sets in his last three matches to dismiss determined opponents, but he had no trouble on a balmy evening on Court Philippe Chatrier.
"It was like I could close my eyes and everything went in," Alcaraz said in his on-court interview.
"My feeling was unbelievable, I tried to hit my shots at 100% ... today was just one of those matches where everything went in.
"We were in the quarter-finals of Roland Garros and these matches aren't easy. I've lost to him twice and against Tommy, matches are very difficult. That helped me focus on my tennis and try not to go down or let him get into the match."
Alcaraz motored through the opening set without dropping a game and grabbed his fourth break early in the second set after sparing Paul the ignominy of another bagel and the 22-year-old pulled further away to double his lead in only 53 minutes.
He glided across the red clay while delivering punishing shots, knocking the racket out of Paul's hands at one point with a thunderous effort, before finally facing some resistance in the third set.
Former junior French Open champion Paul stayed level with Alcaraz until 4-4 but soon faded away and the holder closed out the victory to book a clash with Italian eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti in the semi-finals. REUTERS

Swiatek thankful for dominant French Open run after rare defeat
PARIS - Iga Swiatek's 26-match winning streak at the French Open ground to a screeching halt as her title defence ended on Thursday but the Pole said she was happy to have enjoyed a glorious run at the claycourt Grand Slam. Swiatek's bid for a fifth Roland Garros title went up in smoke after world number one Aryna Sabalenka prevailed 7-6(1) 4-6 6-0 on Court Philippe Chatrier. The defeat was a blow for Swiatek, who was hoping to claim her first title in a patchy year for the usually dominant 24-year-old following a short doping ban in 2024, but she said she was glad to have Roland Garros to come back to year after year. "I love playing here, so for sure I'm happy I was fortunate enough to play so many great tournaments here. Even this one, I played better than weeks before," Swiatek told reporters. "So I'm just happy that I have this place to come back to every year and just try to push myself." Sabalenka's power made all the difference to end Swiatek's dreams of becoming the first woman in the professional era since 1968 to win four consecutive titles in Paris. "The pace was from her super fast," Swiatek said. "Especially in the beginning of the match, she played as hard as possible and pretty risky. So it was just hard to get into any rally. "And then, I was able to do that ... so more things happened because it wasn't just like serve and one shot or return and one shot, and I could build a rally a little bit. "But in the third set I feel like we came back to what happened in the first, and she used her chances, and I didn't really keep up what I was doing in the second set." Swiatek showed plenty of determination in her previous two rounds to see off 13th seed Elina Svitolina and 12th seed Elena Rybakina, and she said she was satisfied with the quality she showed during the tournament. "Now it's probably not the best time to look at the wider perspective," Swiatek said. "So probably it wasn't a bad tournament, but obviously not the result I wanted." REUTERS/Jane Rosenberg NEW YORK - A lawyer for Sean "Diddy" Combs accused a witness at his sex trafficking trial on Thursday of falsely testifying that the hip-hop mogul held her over the balcony of a Los Angeles apartment, and suggested Combs was on the East Coast at the time of the alleged attack. Bryana Bongolan, a friend of Combs' former girlfriend Casandra Ventura, testified on Wednesday that Combs in September 2016 held her over the rail of the balcony at Ventura's apartment and then threw her onto the balcony's furniture, causing her bruises. Prosecutors say the incident was among several violent acts that Combs, 55, took against Ventura and people close to her during the decade he was coercing Ventura to take part in drug-fueled sexual performances with male sex workers known as "Freak Offs." Combs has pleaded not guilty to five counts including racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. He could face life in prison if convicted on all counts. Bongolan had not stated the exact date of the alleged balcony attack during her testimony on Wednesday. Jurors on Wednesday saw a picture Bongolan took of a bruise on her leg taken on September 26, 2016. A civil lawsuit Bongolan filed against Combs last year said the incident took place "on or about September 26, 2016." On Thursday, Combs' lawyer Nicole Westmoreland asked Bongolan if she was aware that Combs performed at a concert in New Jersey on September 25, 2016 and attended an event in New York with Ventura the following day. Westmoreland also showed jurors a document from the Trump International hotel in New York indicating that someone named "Frank Black" stayed there from September 24, 2016 through September 29, 2016. Previous witnesses at the trial have testified that Combs, like other celebrities, frequently used aliases when staying at hotels. "You came in here and you lied to the ladies and gentlemen of this jury, didn't you?" Westmoreland asked. "I can't agree with you," Bongolan replied. Under further questioning from prosecutor Madison Smyser, Bongolan said she did not know the exact date of the incident because it happened "a while ago," but said she had no doubt it took place.
