Auburn will formally retire QB Cam Newton's No. 2 jersey during game against Georgia

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn will retire 2010 Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton's No. 2 jersey this fall, making him the fourth player in program history to receive the honor. The ceremony will take place during Auburn's home game against rival Georgia on Oct. 11. Newton will join Pat Sullivan (No. 7), Bo Jackson (No. 34) and Terry Beasley (No. 88) as former Tigers football players whose numbers are formally retired. The jerseys of Sullivan and Beasley were retired following Sullivan's 1971 Heisman Trophy season, and Jackson's number was retired as part of Auburn's football centennial celebration in 1992. No one has worn No. 2 at Auburn since Newton and the Tigers beat Oregon in the Bowl Championship Series national title game for the 2010 season. But soon it will be officially out of service. 'Auburn will always be home to me,' Newton said in a statement. 'The national championship we won in 2010 was a special moment, and to have my jersey retired ... is an incredible honor that I'll cherish forever. War Eagle!' One of the most decorated players in Auburn and Southeastern Conference history, Newton led Auburn to conference and national titles with a perfect 14-0 record. He threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing for 1,473 yards and 20 more scores. He became the first player in SEC history to pass for more than 2,000 yards and rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season. 'Cam Newton not only led Auburn to a national championship in 2010, but he produced one of the most prolific seasons ever by a college football player,' Auburn athletic director John Cohen said. 'Retiring Cam's jersey number is a fitting way to celebrate his lasting impact on Auburn University and Auburn Athletics for all time.' ___

MacIntrye and Hatton qualify for Europe's Ryder Cup team. Lowry vs Hojgaard for last automatic spot

VIRGINIA WATER, England (AP) — Robert MacIntyre and Tyrrell Hatton have secured automatic qualification to Europe's Ryder Cup team for next month's matches at Bethpage Black, leaving just one guaranteed place up for grabs. Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood were already sure to be on the team, so captain Luke Donald knows five of his players for the defense of the cup on Sept. 26-28. The sixth and final automatic spot will go to Shane Lowry or Rasmus Hojgaard. Lowry occupies No. 6 place in Europe's points list but could be overtaken by Hojgaard, who has one event left in qualifying — the British Masters starting Thursday. Hojgaard needs to finish in a two-way tie for 29th or better to guarantee his place on the team. Lowry does not have another qualification event. Donald will then have six captain's picks to complete his team. 'Two great characters and golfers back on Team Europe,' Donald posted on X on Monday about MacIntyre and Hatton. 'Team is shaping up nicely.' It will be the Scot's second Ryder Cup appearance. He was part of the winning team at the Marco Simone club outside Rome in 2023. ___

Depending on how you look at it, Monday's final between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz is either a great sign for men's tennis or a warning about where things are headed. Ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in the world and the winners of the past seven Grand Slams, Sinner and Alcaraz are leaving very little room for anybody else in this era. Combined, Sinner and Alcaraz have gone 74-9 in 2025, and they are 43-2 in their past 45 matches. The scary part is that the two juggernauts are just entering their primes. Sinner turned 24 years old on Saturday, while Alcaraz is 22. All of this is to say it's not a surprise that top-ranked Sinner and Alcaraz are meeting in the finals of the 2025 Cincinnati Masters, one of the biggest non-Grand Slams on the tennis calendar and the warmup event for the U.S. Open. Perhaps what is a little surprising is how little rust the two stars have shown in this tournament after long layoffs. Both Sinner and Alcaraz opted to skip the Canadian Masters, and neither played in any other hard-court events during the North American swing, meaning that this is the first event for both since the Italian defeated the Spaniard in the 2025 Wimbledon Final on July 13. Neither player has really put a foot wrong in this tournament, but Sinner has been the more dominant of the two finalists. The 24-year-old from the Austrian border has not dropped a set in his first five matches, and he's only lost 30 games in that span. That's an average of three games lost per set. Alcaraz has dropped a couple of sets in his run to the final, but he's not given us any reason to worry, especially since he's had a tougher path to this point than Sinner. While Sinner has yet to face a top 25 opponent in Cincinnati, Alcaraz dispatched world No. 11 Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals and defeated No. 3 Alexander Zverev in straight sets in the semifinals. Get the lowdown on the Best USA Sports Betting Sites and Apps It seems that the tennis world expects this rivalry to follow a pattern. Sinner, for the most part, will come out ahead on hard courts, while Alcaraz will have the better of the head-to-head on the clay. I'd push back a little bit on that in both directions, as both players have proved that they can handle any conditions that are thrown at them. But it's that perception that is going to allow you to get Alcaraz at a decent price in matches on Sinner's preferred surface, and vice versa. Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz embrace after Sinner's win at Wimbledon on July 13. AP That's the situation that's developed for Monday's final, as Sinner is currently sitting as a -175 favorite to win the match. Sinner should be the favorite for this match — he did play Alcaraz off the court in the Wimbledon Final — but the odds should be tighter. At this point, we're splitting hairs when these two generational talents meet, and that means there is going to inevitably be value on the underdog. In this case, that underdog is arguably the best player in the world.
