Bryce Dallas Howard gets brutally honest about her most notorious move flops: ‘You always know'

News.com.aua day ago

Hollywood star Bryce Dallas Howard has opened up about some of her most notorious box office flops.
Despite starring in the likes of Twilight and Jurrasic Park, Howard has also starred in projects that became some of their respective years' biggest bombs.
She starred in Lady in the Water from director M. Night Shyamalan, which failed to recoup its $154m budget, as well as notorious flop Argylle, which cost over $300m to make but didn't manage to even hit $150m at the box office.
'You can always see it coming while you're making it,' Howard recently told The Independent about her movie flops. 'I've never been shocked when something doesn't work. But I'm just an actor – you're there to serve a director's vision. If a movie doesn't turn out the way that you envisioned, you can barely feel disappointed because it's not yours. You're not the person who's building the thing.'
Howard said in comparison, she has seen her father, the Oscar-winning filmmaker Ron Howard, break down emotionally when one of his films doesn't do well.
'It blows him away that I don't do that,' she said.
She went on to recall a story her father told her about Clint Eastwood back in the day.
When her dad's 1992 film Far and Away with Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise flopped spectacularly at the box office, he turned to Eastwood for some sage advice.
'He said, 'Ronnie – a career is like a season of television. You've got 24 episodes, some of the episodes are going to be bad, some are going to be serviceable, maybe a little forgettable, and maybe five of those episodes are going to be really strong and last,'' Howard said.
Argylle, from filmmaker Matthew Vaughn, starred the likes of Henry Cavill and Dua Lipa, but their combined starpower failed to help make the film a hit.
In an interview with Empire last year, Vaughn confessed that he genuinely believed the movie was going to be a big success after test screenings ended positively.
'F**k yeah,' Vaughn said when asked if the disappointing reviews from critics were a difficult read for him.
'We had done test screenings that had gone fantastically well. The premiere was a really fun night, and it was like going back to the 'Snatch' days where there was such excitement. And I started drinking the Kool-Aid. It's a fun, feel-good movie, or I thought it was a fun, feel-good movie. We didn't make 'Citizen Kane,' but f**king hell, then the reviews came out and I'm like, 'Wait, what have I done to offend these people?' They were vitriolic. I'm not saying the movie's perfect by any means, but I didn't think it was offensive. That took me by surprise.'

Judge declares mistrial on one of three Harvey Weinstein rape charges

The mistrial ruling came one day after the jury convicted Weinstein on a separate sex abuse charge. It acquitted him on a second charge. Weinstein, once one of the most powerful people in Hollywood, faced a retrial that began on 23 April after a New York State appeals court overturned his 2020 conviction last year. He was accused by prosecutors of raping an aspiring and assaulting two other women. Weinstein pleaded not guilty and has denied assaulting anyone or having non-consensual sex.

World erupts over man spotted talking to Taylor Swift at Stanley Cup Final

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift might be enchanted with ice hockey now. The star couple was on hand at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida, for Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers on Friday (AEST). Kelce wore a red top with red shorts as he rocked a white and red 'Palm Tree Crew' Panthers hat while Swift appeared to keep her look neutral. They were even spotted chatting it up with NHL icon Wayne Gretzky in their suite, and taking selfies with a few fans. Swift, 35, has had plenty of viral hockey moments in life, including a reveal of the 2009-10 Predators then-new third jerseys during a concert in Nashville and, four years later, taking a picture with former Hurricanes star Joel Skinner, even holding up his jersey. She also donned New York Islanders gear in a skit with Jimmy Fallon for the 'Tonight Show' in 2015. Kelce, who previously posted about his love of playoff hockey, and his brother Jason debated in October on the 'New Heights' podcast about which NHL players could also play in the NFL, and they named Oilers star Connor McDavid as one who could. TV cameras quickly spotted Swift and Kelce in the stands at Amerant Bank Arena in Florida, with the superstar couple engrossed in the action as the game went to overtime. There was no shortage of cutaway shots of Swift in the crowd on the TV coverage. After Edmonton tied the game at 3-3, Swift's Shake It Off played through the arena and TNT sideline reporter Jackie Redmond joked she was the 'official Taylor Swift correspondent'. 'Listen guys, as the official Taylor Swift correspondent, I think it's important to note that after taking a 3-nothing lead and blowing it to the Edmonton Oilers, they opted to play Shake It Off by Taylor Swift here in the arena,' Redmond said. 'Though I don't think that helped the crowd feel any better about what's transpired here.' Speaking on TNT's in-game coverage, Gretzky remarked: 'I don't know Pink Pony but I know who she (Swift) is', referring to Swift's cover of Chappell Roan's song Pink Pony Club. He chuckled, adding: 'I'm just telling the truth.' Sports writer Richard Deitsch joked on X: 'I will never watch the NFL again if TNT Sports or Sportsnet's cameras show Taylor Swift at this Stanley Cup Finals game. 'Watching sports on television is my blank space and I will not let Swift ruin it for me.' taylor swift showing up to sports games and ruining the fragile male ecosystem one arena at a time is my favorite movie. i love it here — bethany ∘°âˆ˜â™¡âˆ˜°âˆ˜ eras forever (@corneliastagain) June 12, 2025 Swift and Kelce were on the edge of their seats as Florida's Sam Reinhart slotted a goal from close range with 20 seconds remaining in the game to make it 4-4 and force overtime. It took more than 10 minutes of overtime for Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl to break the deadlock and score the matchwinning goal for a 5-4 victory. It was a gutsy win by the Oilers, who levelled the best-of-seven Stanley Cup Final series 2-2. Oilers star Connor McDavid, a three-time NHL MVP, is chasing a Stanley Cup trophy to cement his legacy as arguably the greatest ice hockey since Gretzky. A Canadian team hasn't won the Stanley Cup since 1993, and the Oilers last won the Stanley Cup back in 1990. Swift and Kelce hadn't been sighted in public often since Kelce's Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl in February. In April, a source told Page Six that Swift and Kelce have enjoyed a 'special' off-season, which has largely been low-key after the Chiefs lost the Super Bowl to the Eagles. 'They are making the most of their time off together. They are hanging out with friends, too. It's a special time for them,' the source said. The two were spotted last month in Philadelphia to celebrate Mother's Day, though before that, they opted out of the Met Gala in New York due to scheduling issues. Kelce, who announced earlier this off-season he is coming back to the Kansas Chiefs for at least one more NFL season, will likely have more of Swift at games this year as she is not touring this coming season. 'This fall will be completely different. It's the first season where she's not constantly flying back and forth or working around an entire touring calendar.' The Panthers entered Game 4 leading the series 2-1 and took a 3-0 lead early in the game, only for the Oilers to mount a comeback and tie the game at 3-3 in the second period. There are rumours that Swift and Kelce are already engaged and are set to get married soon. Meanwhile, Swift is reportedly planning a year long 'honeymoon' by taking a year off from her music career to celebrate owning all her early music records.

Orlando Bloom opposed Katy Perry's plan to become an ‘astronaut'

Though Katy Perry gushed Orlando Bloom was 'all about the journey' in a recent radio interview, a source claimed the actor 'did not think going on the mission was a good idea.' The source insisted 48-year-old Orlando 'knew she would get backlash' from the mission, and was 'frustrated' and 'disappointed' with her decision to take part in it. 'From day one, Orlando didn't think going on the Blue Origin mission was a good idea, and knew she would face backlash,' the source explained of the actor, who has been engaged to the pop star, 40, since 2019. 'He always thought it was a stupid idea and she wouldn't get anything positive out of it.' Reps for Katy and Orlando did not respond to The US Sun's request for comment. Katy famously joined the April 15 all-female flight despite her fiance's alleged thoughts. Orlando and the pair's 4-year-old daughter Daisy watched from the crowd near Blue Origin's Texas facilities, owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Katy was ridiculed by the public after her return. Some slammed her holding up a daisy and her tour set list while aboard, and then dramatically kissing the ground upon landing. Other celebrities including Emily Ratajkowski and Olivia Munn ripped the flight as a whole. 'That space mission this morning. That's end time s**t. This is beyond parody,' Emily fumed. 'Saying that you care about Mother Earth and it's about Mother Earth and you're going up in a spaceship that is built and paid for by a company that's single-handedly destroying the planet? 'Look at the state of the world and think about how many resources went into putting these women into space. For what? What was the marketing there?' 'What's the point? Is it historic that you guys are going on a ride? I think it's a bit gluttonous,' Olivia said on the Today show. 'Space exploration was to further our knowledge and to help mankind. What are they gonna do up there that has made it better for us down here?' The disagreement between the couple made Orlando believe Katy 'doesn't take him seriously.' 'He has been frustrated that his opinion is not being taken seriously or even heard,' the source continued. 'He feels she is a different person lately.' The source confirmed rumours that the two have hit a 'rough patch' and are leading separate lives. According to reports this week, the couple is spending more and more time apart. People reported that Orlando and Katy faced 'tension' after she felt frustrated with her latest album 143 and world tour's bad reviews. As The US Sun reported in February, the Lifetimes tour has suffered from poor ticket sales. After the tour kicked off, fans ripped her dance moves and costumes. Orlando and Katy have not publicly responded to the rumours their relationship is in trouble.
