Pirro: Trump National Guard deployment in DC 'just the beginning'

U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro warned Monday night that President Trump's deployment of the National Guard in the Washington was 'just the beginning,' characterizing the crime rates in the nation's capital as 'horrific.' 'President Trump has rightfully declared an emergency crisis of crime and deployed the National Guard, the ATF, the DEA, the FBI, so that criminals know now that we see them," she said during an apperance on Fox News with host Sean Hannity. "We are watching them and we are gonna make them accountable. But make no mistake, Sean, this is just beginning." Trump announced earlier Monday that the Justice Department (DOJ) would be taking control of D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and that around 800 National Guard troops would be involved in the federal government's effort to lower crime rates. 'I'm deploying the National Guard to help reestablish law, order, and public safety in Washington, D.C., and they're going to be allowed to do their job properly,' the president said Monday during a press conference from the White House. Data shows that, so far, violent crime is down 26 percent compared to 2024 in the nation's capital, and that homicides last year dropped by 32 percent compared to 2023. But, the number of homicides last year, 187, was still higher than in the years in the lead-up to the COVID-19 pandemic. A Metropolitan Police Department police commander, Michael Pulliam, was placed on paid leave in May and is under investigation for allegedly altering crime numbers in his district, NBC4 reported last month. 'Today was, as the president called it, 'Liberation Day.' But we are now in the process of bringing to the attention of law-abiding citizens, not just in D.C., but throughout the country, that we're not gonna tolerate crime that is out of control in the nation's capital,' Pirro told host Sean Hannity. 'This is the shining city on the hill that our forefathers talked about," she added. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, along with a host of other Democratic mayors, pushed back on Trump administration's moves, calling it "unsettling and unprecedented." But, she added that it was not surprising. The president's effort is being carried out through provisions under the city's Home Rule Act. Congress passed the law in the 1970s to give the nation's capital autonomy over its local affairs. Trump also appointed Drug Enforcement Administration chief Terry Cole to lead the federal takeover of MPD.

Police pursuit involving stolen U-Haul truck ends with crash, driver in custody

A stolen U-Haul truck crashed into a utility pole during a police pursuit in Metro Detroit, the Michigan State Police reported. The crash happened about 12:10 a.m. Tuesday near 108 Massachusetts Street, after Highland Park Police Department reported it was involved in the pursuit. As the Detroit Regional Communication Center relayed that information to state police in the area, they learned that the stolen vehicle tried to ram a patrol car and strike multiple officers. Highland Park police reported the pursuit ended with the suspect crashing the truck into a pole near Massachusetts Street and John R Street. Metro South post troopers responded to the area, and assisted in looking for the driver. State police chased the suspect into a back yard and then found him, a 34-year-old man from Detroit, hiding behind a house. The suspect was taken into custody and turned over to Highland Park Police Department, which is continuing the investigation.

Trump deploys Nat'l Guard in DC, takes federal control of DC police

President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he is deploying the National Guard in Washington, D.C., and placing the DC Metropolitan Police Department under federal control to address staggering crime rates in the city. 'This is liberation day in DC, and we're going to take our capital back. We're taking it back. Under the authorities vested in me as the President of the United States, I'm officially invoking Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, you know what that is, and placing the DC Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal control,' Trump said, adding, 'In addition, I'm deploying the National Guard to help reestablish law, order, and public safety in Washington, DC, and they're going to be allowed to do their job properly.' Last year, Washington, D.C. had the fourth-highest homicide rate in the country at 27.3 per 100,000 residents. The staggering rate was nearly six times higher than New York City and also higher than Atlanta, Chicago, and Compton. 'We're the most beautiful, potentially, capital in the world. we always had. But people come from Iowa, they come from Indiana, they come and then they get mugged. Not going to happen. Keep coming, because within — by the time you get your trip set, it's going to be safe again, and it's going to be clean very quickly,' Trump continued. 'We're going to replace the medians that are falling down all over the roads. We're going to replace the potholes. We're going to put a nice new coat of asphalt over the top. No, we don't have to rip the road out and spend seven years building a new road because they cut everything, because some designers said, well, we need a quarter of an inch more turn for safety reasons.'
