Yamal outshines Ballon d'Or contenders as Spain beats France 5-4 in Nations League semifinal
Uefa Nations League semi-final: Spain 5 (Williams 22', Merino 25', Yamal (P) 54', 67', Pedri 55') France 4 (Mbappe (P) 59', Cherki 79', Vivian (OG) 84', Kolo Mauni 90+3') Lamine Yamal won the battle of Ballon d'Or contenders on Thursday by scoring twice as Spain eclipsed France 5-4 in their Nations League semifinal. The 17-year-old Yamal outshone French counterparts Désiré Doué and Ousmane Dembélé as Spain initially ran riot against Didier Deschamps' tired-looking team to book its place in Sunday's final against Portugal. Portugal defeated host nation Germany 2-1 on Wednesday. Thursday's game had been billed as a contest between young stars, but it was clear that Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League win in Munich on Saturday had added more weight to French legs with PSG stars Doué and Dembélé disappointing. Kylian Mbappé scored what seemed a consolation from a penalty, substitute Rayan Cherki scored late on his France debut, then Spain defender Daniel Vivian conceded an own goal, and Randal Kolo Muani, another substitute, scored in stoppage time as France came close to an improbable comeback. Nico Williams opened the scoring in the 22nd minute after Yamal threaded the ball through to Mikel Oyarzabal, who held off two defenders and served it on a plate for Williams to rifle to the roof of the net. Mikel Merino, the hero when Spain last played in Stuttgart, made it 2-0 three minutes later after playing a one-two with Oyarzabal. Théo Hernandez struck the crossbar and Spain needed goalkeeper Unai Simón to deny Doué, then Mbappé and Dembélé. But Spain looked capable of scoring at any time. Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen thought he'd scored spectacularly after a brilliantly worked free kick, but the goal was ruled out for offside. It was the 20-year-old Huijsen's third game for Spain. It looks like he's set to stay. Adrien Rabiot conceded a penalty for a mistimed challenge on Yamal, who dusted himself off to make it 3-0 from the spot in the 54th. Pedri scored a minute after that, taking Williams' pass with his first touch and dinking it past the bewildered Mike Maignan with his next. Pedro Porro's foul gave Mbappé his chance from the penalty, but Yamal replied to that by prodding the ball past Maignan. Spain (4-3-3): Simón (c); Cucurella, Huijsen, Le Normand, Porro ; Merino, Zubimendi, Pedri; Williams, Oyarzaba, Yamal. Subs: Isco, Baena, Cubarsi, Grimaldo, Lopez, Mingueza, Morata, Olmo (Williams 64'), Aghehowa (Oyarzabal 77'), Pino, Gavi (Merino 91'), Raya, Remiro, Ruiz (Pedri 64'), Vivian (Le Normand 77'). France (4-3-2-1): Maignan; Hernandez, Lenglet, Konate, Kalulu ; Rabiot, Kone ; Doue , Olise, Dembele; Mbappe. Subs: Bade, Barcola (Doue 63'), Cherki (Olise 63'), Chevalier, Digne, Guendouzi, Gusto (Kalulu 63'), Hernandez (Lenglet 72'), Kolo Muani (Dembele 76'), Samba, Pavard, Tchouameni, Thuram, Zaire-Emery

‘I hate it, hate it' – Premier League official rages at VAR as referee says ‘we knew the monster that had been created'
REF Bobby Madley let rip at VAR, insisting its usage means football will never see another Sergio Aguero moment. And Madley slammed Prem chiefs for creating a 'monster' that is 'ruining' the beautiful game. 1 Referee Bobby Madley has not held back when discussing VAR Credit: Getty The Wakefield-born whistler, 39, who takes charge of EFL games and is a fourth official for top-flight matches, raged: 'Most fans weren't clambering to get video technology. 'Players weren't, referees weren't, but the multi-million pound people running football had issues with refs getting things wrong. 'But we knew the monster that had been created — we knew what was coming. 'We've got to the stage where people go, 'Sorry, we're ruining football with this now'.' New footage sees raging Jude Bellingham KICK VAR monitor in frustration after Real Madrid's last-gasp defeat VAR: Imagine the future... Martin Lipton's pro VAR view FAST forward 12 months to May 18, 2025. After 89 minutes at Molineux, Wolves, needing to win their last game of the season to stay up, are beating Manchester United, who require a point for Champions League football. A ball over the top sends Rasmus Hojlund racing away. The flag stays down. Hojlund scores. Wolves are relegated. And on the way home, the dejected Wolves fans see the still image on their phones. Hojlund was 2ft offside. No question. A shocker. It means at least a year in the Championship, £100million income drop, a firesale of the squad. While United bank an extra £50m. But it's OK. Every one of those fans, plus smiling boss Gary O'Neil and the Wolves board, will line up to say: 'No worries. It's what we voted for. Rough with the smooth.' Yes. And I've got a bridge to Ireland to sell you.
